Chapter 97: Refuse To Lose A Brother
Dante raised an eyebrow at Tank’s statement.
"What do you mean by that?" he asked, cocking his head to the side as he studied Ghost in a more detached manner.
When he first arrived, he was too caught up in the blood of his Guardian to really take things into account. Like the fact that his tongue had been cut out in front of Bishop and Bishop hadn’t stopped it from happening.
Like the hundreds of tiny cuts appearing on his body with no blade or weapon making them.
Like the fact that he was on the first floor.
The piercing blade of betrayal cut through Dante’s heart as he took in a deep breath. Keeping his face impassive, he walked forward, crouching beside the other man. "Where is Hattie, Etienne?" he asked, his voice hardly more than a whisper.
When Ghost looked at him, there was fear clouding his eyes along with the pain. "Ah," nodded Dante, standing back up. Now he understood how deep the betrayal went.
Funny. When he found out that Antoine and Brittney were together in his last life... it hurt so bad that he thought he would never survive the pain.
But that pain was nothing compared to how he was feeling right now.
"Why does it matter where she is?" demanded Wolf as he pushed his way through the crowd. "We need to get him to Doc as fast as possible. We can worry about the little bitch after Ghost is healed."
No one caught Tank’s movement as he reached into his right shoulder holster. Pulling out his second favorite gun, he shot the Wolf between his eyes before he could say another word. Before the body could even hit the floor, the gun was back in its place, and Tank was back to staring at Ghost.
"Aren’t you going to answer our Head?" he asked softly, his face utterly devoid of emotion. He wanted to surge forward and rip the traitor apart until there was nothing left of him to even feed the zombies, but he held himself back.
The voice told him to watch justice, not enforce it. Whatever Ghost was going through, Hattie had a hand in it. And he had no doubt that it would eventually kill the other man.
"But why the tongue first..." Tank mused out loud, going to stand beside Dante. "She is inventive enough to give you death by a thousand papercuts, but why did she rip out your tongue first."
"Hattie couldn’t have done this," announced Bishop, returning to his friend’s side. Taking Ghost’s hand one more time, he flinched just a bit as his touch caused Ghost’s skin to split a bit more. "She isn’t this mean."
"Do you really think this is mean?" asked Dante, his blank eyes staring unseeing. "Because one thing that I know about Hattie is that she might not see things in black and white, but she always believed that there was a price to be paid for everything. So, what did Ghost do to have this be his price?"
Ghost tried to speak, but the words only came out gargled as blood flew out of his mouth.
"She didn’t want us to know what you had done," muttered Tank, the epiphany hitting him hard. "That’s why she took your tongue. I told her that next to Bishop, I trusted you the most to look after her, and she didn’t want me to be hurt for putting my faith in you."
Ghost stilled at Tank’s statement before ever so slowly nodding his head.
"Silly little lamb," smiled Tank. "Always so worried about others."
"There is only one thing to do now," agreed Dante as even Bishop let go of Ghost’s hand. "Now, we stand as witnesses for Hattie’s judgment."

"What have you done?" screamed Envy as he barged into the throne room. "I know your default setting is to be greedy, but to take all seven souls is a bit much, even for you. I had plans for mine!"
"Hattie," croaked Greed, his voice coming out hoarse and dry as if he had been screaming for hours. Envy slowed his steps, more cautious now. There were very few things in Hell that could make one of the sins sound like that.
And none of them were good.
"Where are you, old man?" Envy asked softly, looking for any sign of a threat. As he turned toward the area between the thrones and the mirrors, he stopped dead.
Greed lay on the floor, nothing more than bones covered in skin. His flesh was so pale and papery it seemed like a stiff wind would tear him to pieces. Not a drop of his energy could be found.
The Sin was almost completely mortal.
"What happened?" demanded Envy, dropping to his knees beside his brother. His hands hovered over Greed as if he was too scared to touch anywhere. "How did it happen?"
"They tried to kill Hattie," whispered Greed. Every word that he spoke seemed to have been ripped out of his chest. Envy could practically see them forming as Greed’s body shook with the effort. "I made a wish."
"Oh, you bastard," murmured Envy, feeling a tear slipping down his cheek. "You know demons can’t make wishes. Wishing is enough to kill us."
"Worth it," croaked Greed, a slight smile on his face as his eyelids fluttered closed. "None of the meat sacks are able to protect her. Sent her to someone who can heal her."
"And you used the power from the seven souls as well as your own as the sacrifice," nodded Envy. "I’m envious that you were the one to make the sacrifice. Now, she is going to love you more than the rest of us when she finds out."
Sending out a mental warning to Pride to get his ass back to the throne room, Envy gently placed his hands on Greed’s chest. Taking in a deep breath, he closed his eyes, letting some of his energy flow into the other Sin.
It wouldn’t be nearly enough to heal him. Their energies were so depleted that it was barely enough to keep them alive, but Greed couldn’t die.
Envy refused to lose a brother—not for protecting their woman.
