Be Careful What You Wish For: A Zombie Apocalypse -
Chapter 65: Protecting Me
Chapter 65: Protecting Me
The sound of his men’s screams and pleas was grating on Dante’s nerves. There was nothing he wanted to do then jump into the middle of the fight, but he knew better.
It was his men’s job to act as his weapon. That meant that they needed to be prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for him if needed. The only shitty part was that he had no idea what was going on outside of the cocoon of snow that blew around him.
"You seem on edge," murmured the girl standing beside him. She appeared to be clutching a Teddy bear that he hadn’t seen with her before, but other than that, she was completely calm.
Almost too calm.
"And you don’t," he stated, his voice devoid of emotion. He knew better than to trust a woman, and if she was this calm with the enemy so close, then she clearly had an escape plan.
"Would it change anything?" she asked, turning so that her milky white eyes were staring in his general direction. It almost made him uneasy to be the center of attention... like he was being judged and found wanting.
"Excuse me?" snapped Dante, his back up at the feeling that he was lacking in some way.
"Would me being on edge change anything? Would it make the zombies disappear if I was on edge? Would the snow go away? Would it make sure that Tank and Mathis returned safe and sound?"
The fact that this child was being so logical while he was coming apart at the seams enraged Dante even more.
"Don’t let it get to you," came the voice of Pride in his head. "She is not someone you can apply to logic of your world to. Think of her more as the center of a storm. She is chaos, so chaos doesn’t bother her."
Dante’s face twisted in a sneer as he went back to ignoring the girl and the voice.
More screams pierced his ears and the feeling of failure was starting to overwhelm him. It wasn’t a feeling he was used to in this life, and it grated on him.
"Fuck!" grunted a soldier, and Dante could hear the tell-tale sound of an empty chamber wildly clicking. "I wish I had more bullets."
------
’Deal accepted,’ announced the female voice, sounding more than a little happy.
"Ouch," I said out loud, not realizing that there were people around me. "I wonder what that is going to cost him."
"Excuse me?" demanded Dante, and I felt him getting closer to me. "What did you say?"
"Say?" I repeated, cocking my head to the side. "I didn’t say anything. Maybe you are just hearing things. I heard it was a sign of old age. You might want to get that looked at before it gets worse."
"Fucking hell!" called out another voice before Dante could reply to me. "I wish there were no more zombies here!"
Ah fuck... I sighed, closing my eyes in pain as I heard the two words I wasn’t looking forward to. The second the woman spoke, the light moaning of zombies disappeared.
Unfortunately, we were still in the middle of a snowstorm, so I couldn’t see anything in front of me. But the last time someone came up with that wish....
"Tank!" I screamed, cupping my hands so that my voice could travel even farther. "Mathis!"
They were really the only two that I cared about surviving this thing, and they weren’t going to survive if we didn’t do something fast.
An arm wrapping around my shoulders from behind me startled me for a moment before I recognized the presence of the man behind me. "Where is Tank?" I demanded, not moving an inch.
I was enjoying touches that didn’t bring pain, and I wasn’t about to shrug off any of them.
"I’m here," grunted Tank just as he ’appeared’ in front of me.
Using Mathis’ sight, I looked the man up and down.
"Is any of that blood yours?" I demanded, reaching forward to try and see if there was anything hidden from me.
"No, Lamb, I’m fine. But if you are okay, I have to get back there. The zombies are gone; we need to clean up our dead before they come back to life," explained Tank as he gently tried to get away from my touch.
"Nope," I announced, just as I felt Dante coming to my slide, almost trapping me in. "You’re not going anywhere. You are going to stay here, where I know you are safe and sound."
"Princess," murmured Mathis behind me as he kissed the top of my head. "I understand that you are scared, but this has to be done. Besides, it’s not the first war we’ve fought."
Letting out a long sigh, I caught Tank’s face between my hands, letting Teddy disappear back into my space, and pulled him down to me face.
"An idiot made a wish," I explained to him, not really caring if Mathis and Dante thought I was crazy. Tank should understand. "A wish that all the zombies here would go away."
"Okay," nodded Tank just as I heard Dante snort. "He did good. The zombies are gone."
"No, he didn’t do good," I hissed. "The last person who made that wish got killer clowns instead. You are not fighting killer clowns. We need to get inside the building, seal off all exits, and regroup."
"You know wishes don’t actually come true, right?" sneered Dante, making me want to fight him.
Dropping my hand from Tank, I turned around to face his boss, ready to kill him.
Seeing movement from the corner of my eye, I snatched Tank’s gun from his hand and aimed at Dante’s head before pulling the trigger.
There was a moment of pure stillness where even the wind seemed to stop before all hell broke loose.
Mathis called out Dante’s name just as Tank snatched me from Mathis’ arms, pulling me behind him as if he was trying to protect me.
"You will not touch her," snarled Tank as his wild eyes turned to Mathis. I could feel him shaking with the need to protect me.
The only problem was that he was protecting me from the wrong thing.
