Chapter 66: It’s Going To Be You

Chapter 66: It’s Going To Be You

Mathis looked between me and Dante for a second before making up his mind. Going to stand in front of the other man, he faced off against Tank.

"She tried to kill the Boss," growled Mathis, not realizing that this was not the fucking time to be pulling this shit.

"If I wanted to kill him, he’d be dead," I sneered, placing my hand on Tank’s back. Feeling the rough texture of the coat under the palm of my hand, I leaned forward until my forehead rested on his broad back.

"We need to get inside," I finally continued, collecting myself. "If you trust me, I’ll make sure that you get out of this alive. But I make no promises about anyone else."

I don’t know if it was an act of God or of the Devil, but as soon as those words were out of my mouth, the snow around us died back, allowing us to see just what was out there.

The heavy blowing snow became nothing more than light flurries, and I could see over a hundred humans standing still, looking confused. Their guns, still in their hands, were down at their side, thinking that the threat had gone.

"You tried to kill the Boss," grunted Mathis again, holding his arm out to the side as if he were Dante’s shield. "It’s lucky you missed."

"Trying is just as bad," growled Dante, glaring at me from over Mathis’ shoulder. "And I don’t give second chances."

Suddenly, all the guns that were pointing down at the ground were now aimed at my head... and, as an extension, Tank’s.

"Fuck this shit," I sighed. Straightening up, I cracked my neck from side to side, still touching Tank. "Did you look down yet?" I sneered. Gripping Tank’s coat in my hand, I pulled him backward, leading us both toward the closed glass door of the Dragon’s Lair.

He went willingly, each step carefully measured as if he didn’t want to accidentally step on me. "I will protect you until my dying breath," he growled low. Ah, the guard dog was back, and I had to admit, it was a good look on him.

"No," I replied resolutely. "I said it before, and I’ll say it again. You are not going to die. Therefore, we need to get into the building and lock the doors as fast as possible. If Mathis and Dante can’t see what’s in front of their noses, then they are more blind than I am."

A part of me understood that there were very few people who would blindly trust me the moment they met me. Tank made number seven, as far as I was concerned.

I had hopes for Dante and Bishop, but they were a little too stuck in their ways, even if Mathis’ loyalty toward Dante was something to be envied.

"Did you call, Little Star?" asked Envy, his voice coming into my head loud and clear. "Tell me what you need, and it will be yours."

"I need Tank and I inside a completely impenetrable building," I replied out loud, not worrying about what Tank might think.

Within a few steps, I could feel the cold glass of the building pressing against my back. "Tank, open the door. If there is anyone you want to save, they have only a few seconds to get their asses in after us. I will not be opening the doors until the threat is gone."

And I really had no idea how long that would be. Technically, the only reason why the Killer Clowns from before disappeared was because I killed the one who made the wish.

Unfortunately for all of us, I had no idea who made the wish, so there was no way I could kill them. That meant that we now had a trifecta of things trying to kill the humans. The mutated zombies and the stupid zombies were now going to have to deal with Killer Clowns for who got the most kills.

Huh, maybe the zombies could take out the clowns... That might be fun to watch.

"Get the fuck inside the building now!" bellowed Tank, not even bothering to ask any questions. Every human that I could see looked to Dante and Mathis first, but then a little over half of them shrugged their shoulders and bolted toward Tank.

I could feel Envy watching from inside my head as he took stock of the situation in front of us.

"Since you don’t need me to help you inside the building, what else can I do for you?" asked Envy after a few seconds.

"Do you remember Dimitri and the others from before?" I asked, cocking my head to the side as Mathis pulled Dante toward the door, followed by the rest of the men.

Tank and I were still standing just outside the door, holding it open for everyone to get inside, when Dante and Mathis finally entered the lobby.

There might have been only fifteen men or so still outside when I felt the world go still again. Inside my head, I heard a circus theme song playing, each note just a bit distorted. Then the laughter came, softly at first, before gradually getting louder and louder.

"We need to shut the door now," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. I knew it was irrational to be scared of something that I technically created, but no fear was ever rational.

"There are five men still out there," growled Mathis as he came to stand beside Tank, looking off into the distance as if he could hear the laughter as well. "We don’t leave any man behind."

"That’s cute," I nodded, pushing him forward. He pissed me off, picking Dante over me, and I was still a little ticked at him. Was it irrational to be pissed that he chose a friend over a stranger? Completely.

Did it change how I felt?

Not in the slightest.

"If you want to die for them, that is on you." Pulling Tank into the building, I started to close the door before it was quickly blocked.

"I don’t know who you are or what your purpose for coming here is. But if anyone is going to be left outside, it is going to be you," snarled Dante, pushing me out of the door.
