Chapter 64: A Living Shield

Just as Mathis was thinking of how to answer me, the radio on both Mathis and Tank went off with a squawk.

"We’re under attack!" screamed the man on the other side before the line went dead.

If I thought the two men on either side of me were tense before, it was nothing compared to how they were reacting now.

"Tank, take her back to your place and lock the door. Then meet me down at the front gate," snarled Mathis, pulling a gun out from inside his jacket. "Fuck. I wish I picked up more bullets when I was down at stores."

’Deal accepted,’ whispered the voice quickly inside of me. It was clear that she didn’t want me negotiating a lesser sentence for Mathis. Poor man, I wonder what his sacrifice was going to be.

Letting out a low growl, I didn’t bother to say anything as I strolled, blind, toward where the elevator should be. Since Tank had dropped my hand as soon as the announcement had come through the radio, I was back to being blind.

"You don’t need to be," growled a new voice in my head. "I can always offer my sight if you need it... my Queen."

Ah, fuck. Now, I was hearing new voices. This was not a good thing.

But I didn’t mind being a Queen... so maybe I’d let it go.

"Lamb, my place is at the other end of the hall," called out Tank as he raced up to me, taking my arm in his massive hand. "I’ll make sure you are safe."

Mathis strolled by me, entering the elevator, but not before caressing the side of my cheek for a split second. "Listen to him, Princess," he whispered in my ear as he passed. "We’ll be able to think better if we know you are safe and sound."

Pressing a button, the elevator doors closed behind him fast, whisking him out of sight.

"Let’s go," murmured Tank, moving his hand so that it was now resting on my back. "The sooner I’m gone, the sooner I’ll be back."

Cocking my head to look up at him, I gave him a bright smile. "If you think that you aren’t going to need me down there, then you are much stupider than I thought," I said sweetly. "I am much more dangerous than I look."

A look passed over Tank’s face but was gone before I could identify it. "Besides, who’s to say that whoever is attacking this place can’t get through your defenses and take me away without you knowing? The best way to protect me is to keep me in your eyesight."

"That’s the problem, little Lamb," groaned Tank like the confession was being ripped out of him. "I need to protect you. And since I am supposed to be protecting Dante, that leads to a..."

"A conflict of interest?" I finished for him. I wasn’t insulted that I wasn’t his top priority. He had just met me, after all.

"Fuck that," he sneered. "That leads to a bullet in my head when I disobey a direct order."

Shaking my head, I pressed the call button for the elevator. "No bullets to your head. You are much too hot for your brain to be splattered anywhere."

"You think I’m hot?" sputtered Tank as the doors slid open with a slight ding.

"I’m blind, and I still think you’re hot. Now that’s saying something."

----

"Get her the fuck out of here," snarled a man so loud that he sounded like a wounded panther or something.

"Drop it, Dante. You two stand beside each other and make my job easier," sneered Tank, taking his hand off of me.

His laidback attitude that he had had with me since I first met him was nowhere to be seen. In its place was an ice-cold killer. The contrast between the sweet puppy and the murderous animal in front of me was fascinating.

"Make a wish," I whispered reaching out my hand until I connected with his arm. Once again, using his vision, I saw exactly what he saw.

The snow swirled around us, leaving us almost blind to anything outside an arms’ distance away. Each flake seemed to be like a knife, cutting anything that it happened to touch as the wind wielded it like its own personal weapon.

"I don’t have time to make one properly," Tank replied, his vision narrowing until it was centered on my face. "I won’t take a chance."

Grumbling under my breath about men who listened too well, I let out a long sigh. "If you can come up with one, yell it out so that I can hear it. Don’t worry about the consequences. If it is the difference between life and death, make the fucking wish."

I gripped his arm so hard that it was physically hurting my fingers. But with the snow and not knowing what type of enemy was waiting for him, I felt fear.

"I promise," he murmured after a minute before kissing my forehead. "Now, stay next to Dante. He can be your shield if necessary."

With those parting words, he disappeared into the blizzard as the moans of the dumb zombies finally reached me. Feeling the tension release me, knowing how easy those zombies were to be killed, I spun around to where I had last seen Dante.

"So," I smiled in a general direction, my vision completely gone. "How does it feel to be a living shield?"

The snarl coming out of Dante was probably terrifying to anyone else, but I found it more cute than fearful. "I am not your shield. I will not die for you, no matter what anyone says."

"That’s fine," I replied with a shrug. "Despite what Mathis and Tank think, I can protect myself."

Dante let out a snort, but I closed my eyes, not really feeling the cold or the biting wind around me. Instead, I focused all my attention outward, waiting to hear that magical word.

When people had their backs to the wall, the most interesting things came out of them.

Hopefully, the word wish would be in there somewhere.
