Chapter 52: Far From Over

The sound of thumping against the house roused the women from a restless sleep in the middle of the night. I would have liked to say that we were sleeping soundly, but each one of the women felt a knife dangling over their necks, so sleep wasn’t happening.

It was almost funny that both Sunny and Elizabeth were feeling uneasy, but at the same time, I was feeling more than a little overprotective of the older woman. Sunny had already bartered for at least three more years of life, so she shouldn’t have been scared.

But the trembling of Elizabeth’s hand made me want to commit murder.

"It’s time," grunted Envy, placing his hand on my shoulder so I could use his sight. It was getting a bit old that if I wanted to see, I had to depend on someone else, but at the same time... I appreciated them being beside me. "Are you ready?"

I sneered silently as the sound of heavy footsteps came from the other side of the door as some of the other women huddled together, absolutely fearful about what was on the other side.

Our door slammed open as Isaac stormed in, a candle lit in his hand. "Fucking zombies are at the door," he snarled as the light reflected off his face twisted in anger. It almost looked like something from a horror movie, but it didn’t bother me.

One of the women, Damaris, I thought, whimpered in fear while Jennifer, still tied to the bed, burst out into laughter. "Can they come in?" whimpered Emma, looking blindly around the room. "The zombies can’t open doors, right?"

"Don’t be stupid. They can’t even walk up the stairs, let alone open the doors. You will be fine," grunted Jeremiah, clearly not happy to have been woken up. "You just need to be quiet."

There was a clash of thunder just as Jeremiah spoke, a sign from a higher power that his words were nothing more than a lie. As lightning struck a tree outside, Lily screamed, pointing to the window.

On the other side of the glass was a face looking in at us, its balloon-sized head cocked to the side as it smiled. Raising a hand, it gently tapped at the window with a sharp black talon. It almost looked like we were fish in a tank, and it was deciding which one it was going to have for dinner.

Fleur couldn’t hold back a scream as a loud crashing sound came from downstairs, and suddenly, the sound of moans echoed throughout the mansion.

"I should have planned for this," I sighed, burrowing deeper into Elizabeth’s embrace. "You probably won’t be comfortable staying here after tonight, huh," I worried, my voice a little more than a whisper.

Why hadn’t I seen this coming? Frigging Hell. Her life was tied to the house, and if she couldn’t stand being in the house...

"It will be fine," Elizabeth assured me. "I’ve stayed in much scarier houses. Besides, after this, our deal takes affect, right? Nothing will be able to enter again that means me harm."

Nodding, I saw things from her point of view.

"Okay," I sighed, relieved. As long as she could overlook the blood bath that was going to happen tonight, everything would be okay. "You might want to just close your eyes until tomorrow morning. No matter what you hear, don’t open them."

Elizabeth chuckled as the mutated zombie dragged its nail across the surface of the glass, creating a cut in the dense material. "Sometimes, things are scarier when you can’t see what’s coming. I’ll keep my eyes open if you don’t mind."

Shrugging my shoulders, I watched Isaac freaking out as he took a shot at the window.

I wasn’t too sure what he was thinking. After all, it would have taken the zombie time to get into the room, time we could have used to escape. But now, he had given the zombie an easy entrance.

"Fuck!" screamed Isaac as he shakingly tried to reload his shotgun. His hands were trembling so much that he managed to drop the shell a few times. Each time he had to bend down to pick it up, his eyes shot to the window.

The zombie outside in the rain didn’t seem at all phased over the fact that half of his face had been blown away. In fact, it looked like it was stitching itself back together with every passing second.

"Huh," I grunted, cocking my head to the side as a thin purple hand reached through the shattered glass to unlock the window. Ever so slowly, it raised the bottom pane. Time seemed to slow down as everyone in the room seemed to be hypnotized by the zombie’s movements.

In fact, we were so mesmerized by them that no one seemed to notice the danger until it was too late.

Jeremiah bellowed in rage and fear as a hand seemed to come out of the darkness behind him to grab him by the neck. The hand was so thin it looked like nothing more than bones covered with a light blue skin.

There didn’t even seem to be any veins running through it as it tightened its grip on Jeremiah’s neck. Its black talons dug into his flesh, causing blood to drip from the wounds.

Jumping at the sound of his brother’s cry, Isaac spun around, accidentally setting off his shotgun. The bullets might have been in a spray pattern, but instead of ending Jeremiah’s life before the zombie could, it simply took out a few chunks of flesh here and there.

Once again, Jeremiah screamed, but this time more in pain than in rage. His stomach was riddled with holes from his brother’s shot, but none of them were life-threatening.

From just over his shoulder, I saw a shark-like smile coming from the creature behind him. It seemed to be taking great pleasure in the fear it was wringing out of Jeremiah.

But it was far from over.

"Jer!" screamed Isaac, dropping the gun and pissing his pants. I guess it was easier to terrorize a bunch of women than it was to fight against an actual enemy. Confronted with something that could eradicate him, Isaac wasn’t nearly as brave.

"Kill it," screamed Jeremiah as he gripped the hand against his throat, clawing at his own flesh in order to relieve the pressure against his neck. "Kill it now!"
