Chapter 53: Watching A Show

Once again, Isaac trembled as he tried to reload the last shell into the shotgun. The mutated zombie behind Jeremiah was kindly giving him time to do it, almost like a cat playing with a mouse. It was like it wanted to offer him some sort of hope before ruthlessly tearing it away.

I couldn’t help but approve of its methods. Me, though, I think I would go for the quick and easy kill. There was no point in dragging it out and losing your prey in the process.

Everyone was staring at Isaac and Jeremiah to the point that I think I was the only one to realize that the zombie from the window was now inside the room, sticking to the shadows so that no one else could notice it. Using Envy’s vision, I turned my head to stare at it.

’Can I talk to it?’ I asked Envy, cocking my head to the side as it, too, stared at Isaac like it was watching a show.

"Don’t know," replied Envy. "I don’t think so. Its mind isn’t like ours. It is more focused on food right now than a conversation, but it wouldn’t be the first time you proved us wrong about something."

There seemed to be an undercurrent to Envy’s words, one that I didn’t really understand at the moment, but that was fine.

’Do they know who is food and who isn’t?’ I asked. I had promised life to two of the women, and I wouldn’t break my promise to them.

"Yeah," grunted Pride, never one to be left out. "You’ve created an almost invisible shield over the two women. Nothing is getting through it. Not even a demon."

Nodding my head, I turned my attention back to Isaac as he pumped the shotgun in his hand.

However, just as he was lining up his shot, the zombie from the shadows darted forward, ripping the gun out of his hand. Wrapping its hand around Isaac’s neck, the two brothers were almost a mirror image of each other.

"Brother," gasped Jeremiah as he struggled to breathe, his fingers covered in the purple blood of the creature behind him. "Save me."

It was such a heart wrenching scene that I couldn’t help but snort in amusement. "Sorry!" I grunted, waving my hand in front of me. "I didn’t mean to laugh."

"Fuckin’ bitch," sneered Isaac, turning his head as much as he could to see me. "Dis be all your fault."

Nodding my head, I completely agreed with him. "Yup!" I assured him. "But I couldn’t have done it without the well wishes of your women."

Turning to the blue zombies, the one behind Jeremiah, I smiled at it. "Make it last a long time," I told him.

I honestly hadn’t expected much from the creature. Envy had said that there wasn’t much going on in its head besides finding its next meal, but that theory was proven wrong.

The blue zombie cocked its head to the side as it stared at me before nodding its massive head. Its black, pinprick eye seemed to be focused entirely on me as if judging me.

I must have passed whatever test it had because it straightened its arm, picking up Jeremiah with just one hand. The human was completely powerless; his feet danced in the air as he tried to kick out and touch the ground, but the zombie had complete control.

Spinning around, the zombie left the door frame and went into the hallway, where the moans of the stupid zombies were getting louder and louder downstairs.

The purple zombie copied the blue one’s motions as it, too, picked up Issac and left the room.

"What do we do now?" asked Emma, her eyes completely white with fear.

"Sunny asked to watch," I shrugged, not at all worried about a mansion full of zombies. "So, I say we go watch."

The candle Isaac was originally holding had fallen to the floor; its flames extinguished as it rolled around in a circle. Bending down, I picked it up and blew on it.

Suddenly, a bright flame, four times more powerful than the one Isaac originally had, lit up the room like it was the middle of the day.

"What the fuck?!?" screamed Prue as she scrambled backward, trying to get as far away from me as she could. "How did you do that?"

Rolling my eyes, I returned to Elizabeth’s side. "How can we see anything without light?" I asked as if speaking to a child. Like, seriously. I thought that would be obvious.

It wasn’t like we could just turn on a light switch and be able to see.

"So, this is part of my wish?" asked Sunny, her soft voice slowly changing until it became more confident. "And at least one year of life per dead body?"

I chuckled at that. It sounded like she was almost planning on becoming a serial killer if every human she killed would add a year to her life. "One year per brother, up to three years of guaranteed life," I reminded her. "If you want to survive longer than that, it will depend on your abilities."

Taking the light from my hand, Sunny nodded her head. "Done." Spinning around, she marched out of the room with the only source of light.

"Did you want to watch, too?" I asked, looking up at Elizabeth.

"You can see, can’t you?" she replied instead, her eyes narrowing as she looked at me.

"It comes and it goes," I shrugged, completely honest. "Mostly when wishes are in effect. Almost like I need to see that it has been completed properly."

Elizabeth patted my hand as she climbed up off the floor we had been sleeping on. Still with me under her arm, she straightened her back and lifted her head. "Sunny isn’t the only one who needs to see this."

Some of the girls grunted in agreement, scrambling to their feet as they hurried after us. Only Jennifer, still tied to the bed, was left alone in the room, unable to go anywhere.
