Chapter 401: A Fall From Faith
"Oh, Baby girl," murmured Daddy, turning me around so that my face was buried in his chest. "It’s not that you have to learn how to love... everyone loves differently, and that’s just fine. It’s finding someone who understands your version of love and is happy with that version."
I nodded my head, but I didn’t actually agree with the man. I mean, there had to be one right way to do it, right? I get that I was unlovable; Mother proved that over and over again. And even I was smart enough to know that Père’s version of loving wasn’t right.
"What did you think of the heart that Dimitri brought you?" asked Daddy, changing the subject.
"I liked it," I replied, confused. Who wouldn’t like something like that? It’s like the head that Father Khaos brought me. They were amazing gifts.
"And how do you feel about Tank stalking you and knowing every last detail about you?" pressed Daddy, but this time, I was confused.
"Tank doesn’t do that," I sighed. "But if he did, I wouldn’t mind. Why would I? I mean, I think it’s kind of sweet that he would be willing to go to that length to be with me."
"I do," sighed a voice as Tank stepped out of the shadows of the jungle canopy. "In fact, I think I break out in a rash if I don’t have you in my sight at all times."
I blinked at Tank as he went to stand shoulder to shoulder with Daddy. Confused, I wondered if he was there when I met up with Miriam. When he nodded his head at my unasked question, I felt the tension in my shoulders relax.
I thought I was alone with a woman I would probably never be around again. I was my most honest self with her, and yet, Tank didn’t seem to mind.
"A lot of women would scream and call the police if someone offered them a heart in a cage," chuckled Daddy, pulling me back into the conversation. "They would see it as a threat."
"But it’s a promise," I muttered under my breath. "It’s his way of saying that he won’t let anything hurt me, ever."
"That is Dimitri’s love language. He might not have the words, but he isn’t scared to show you in small ways just how much you mean to him," said Daddy, the smile still on his face.
"Technically, what I am doing is stalking you," shrugged Tank, putting both hands in his pockets. "It... tends to be frowned upon in polite society."
"What he means to say is that it generally terrifies the woman, makes her feel unsafe, and is considered a mental health issue. Normal people shouldn’t stalk people," Daddy sighed, rolling his eyes.
"But I like it," I repeated, wondering just who on earth would not like to be followed by someone. I mean... it made me feel... "Loved," I murmured under my breath. Tank stalking me made me feel loved.
Dimitri giving me the heart made me feel loved.
Father Khaos giving me the head made me feel loved.
"Never, ever think that you are unloved," smiled Tank as he gently rubbed my head. "I want to beg you to take my soul and never let it go. Every time I see you, I want to drop to my knees in worship. Not because you are the Devil, but because you see me. I’m not invisible to you, I’m not some tool to be used and discarded when no longer needed."
Tank took in a deep breath and gently pulled me out of Daddy’s arms as he looked down at me. "The moment I saw you, before the hellhound, before all that, I wanted to protect you. I wanted to destroy anyone who even looked at you weird. And I failed that when Ghost was able to take you from me. But at the same time, you liked me. You saw me... you have always treated me like I matter... and for that, I will be by your side for all of eternity. Even if you are sick of me and send me away. I will be there."
"How can I get sick of you?" I asked, confused. "In fact, I wouldn’t mind going back to how it was before when you were always there, front and center. I miss your touch."
Tank smiled so brightly at me, so innocently, that for a moment I was stunned at his boyish face.
"See," chuckled Daddy. "Not unlovable at all."
Smiling, I felt the weight of the world lift from my shoulders. I could learn how to love my way. I take small steps forward and maybe... just maybe... I wouldn’t be so broken when it was all said and done.

Bishop narrowed his eyes as he stared at the giant walls of the New Dawn Sanctuary. The lineup to get in was nowhere near as long as it had been before. Rumors of the massacre had reached the outside world, no matter how much Réne had tried to keep it under wraps.
Thinking back about all the time he had spent as Dante’s number two, the differences were glaringly obvious. Dante had appreciated him, while Alicia and, by extension, Réne only used him for their own benefit.
He trusted humans too much. He honestly thought that they were nothing more than misunderstood creatures by those in the other realms... but now he had seen their true face. He had seen just what they were capable of when their back were against the wall.
And it made him lose faith in everything that he had once believed in.
He truly believed that he had found his other half in Sophia. She was everything that he used to dream of at night when he was alone.
But if that was the case, then how could she have left him like that? She didn’t even try to stick up for him.
Plunging his knife into the man’s chest in front of him, Bishop watched dispassionately as the man let out a moan of pain before falling at the angel’s feet. It wasn’t like the human was innocent. He had tried to steal Bishop’s food.
"Don’t blame me for this," said Bishop, his voice apathetic. "You brought this on yourself."
He used to wonder what happened to an angel that had a fall from faith. Now he knew.
Smiling, Bishop wiped the blood off the blade before going back the way he had come. Soon enough, the compound would face what was coming to it. He just had to wait a bit longer. After all, a fall was only sweet if it was from a great height.
