Chapter 367: Things That Cannot Be Said

"Woman," grunted Ronan as his eyes narrowed on my laughing face. "Laugh one more time ’n your ass is getting spanked."

I really couldn’t hold back the peels of laughter as he fought to keep his balance on the wobbling stilts. For every step he took forward, he stumbled back three. In fact, it had gotten so bad that the vines, who were originally trying to trip him up, were actually coming to his aid more often than not.

"Yeah, keep your laughin’, Princess," continued Ronan as he felt the vine wrapping around his leg and stilt. "If I fall ’n crack my head open, Imma gonna haunt you forever."

"Shh!" hissed Rhys as he glared at me. I was clinging to Daddy’s back as he walked forward on the sticks with all the confidence in the world. "If they hear us, they’ll attack," continued the man, his eyes darting around the dense jungle floor.

Originally, I had thought that they lived in the abandoned city, but I was surprised when they led us into the jungle. Then, I had just assumed that they were bringing us here to kill us. Since the plants would just eat the remains, it would save them a lot of work. But if you looked carefully, you could see well-worn paths for stilts.

"The city is too open," said Selene as if she was able to read my mind. "It’s where they first found us. Now they associate it with easy prey and go hunting there every night. Two years ago, we moved into the forest and set up an entire village in the trees. They keep us safe."

I had to raise an eyebrow at the confidence in her tone. If she really thought the plants were alive but not the trees, she had another thing coming. I could practically count their breaths. In fact, if I looked really closely, I could see a glowing network of roots hidden under the moss, intersecting with each other like a highway.

"Why?" I wondered out loud.

"Why what?" asked Selene, looking over her shoulder. To anyone else, they would assume that she was looking at me, but both Rhys and I knew that she was checking out Chang Xuefeng.

"Why would the trees protect you?"

"It’s just the way. The vines don’t mess with the trees, and we are too high off the ground for predators to attack," shrugged the woman as she turned her attention back to the path.

A vine darted out, tripping her up for a second, but Rhys was already expecting the move and cut the tendril in half. In my head, I could hear a scream of pain, and my heart broke at the devastation.

Wishing that I could bring the broken part to me, it suddenly appeared on my wrist beside its friend. It was hurt trying to get revenge for me, and I wasn’t about to let it just die for its efforts. That seemed too cruel.

Stroking the vine, I felt its happiness as it fell asleep.

"I’m surprised," whispered one of the tribesmen behind us. "Normally, this part is a bitch to get through with all the thorns."

"Rhys took them out before we got here. It’s only natural that they haven’t had a chance to regroup yet," replied the man beside him softly.

"I’m telling you," argued the first, his voice low so as not to attract any predators. However, I didn’t have the heart to tell him we’ve been surrounded by them since the very beginning. And here was me thinking that I had an issue with out of sight, out of mind.

"This isn’t natural. I’ve done this walk with the Leader and the second, and no matter how many vines were chopped, they came back even stronger. Plants don’t need time to rest. They just are."

"Well, we deserve a break every once in a while," sighed the second man. "Let’s not look a gift horse in the mouth."

"I just wish I had a machete like the second does. If I had one, I would cut down the entire forest."

I buried my head in Daddy’s neck as I heard the wish. I really couldn’t hold back at the moment. I was dying to add a bit more chaos to this jungle, and this was just the thing I needed. Besides, no one here would even know that I was responsible for the wishes.

Dropping the machete in front of the man, I heard an excited gasp as he picked it up. "No way!" he exclaimed, swinging the weapon in front of him a few times. "As if someone dropped it!"

"You need to give it to the second," hissed the other man, his voice twisted with both envy and greed. "If he or the Leader figures out that you have a weapon, no one will be able to save you."

"The sacrifice was six days ago," dismissed the first man, the weapon now hidden away from sight. I was kind of hoping that he would cut his leg off with it or something, but I knew that wasn’t possible. "We still have twenty days before the next one. Who’s to say that there isn’t a shift of power in those days?"

"Shh," hissed the other man, looking around to see if someone was listening to their conversation. "You can’t say that; you can’t even think it. You know the seer will be able to tell your thoughts when we get back to the village. The Leader isn’t going to let you live if you don’t fall in line."

"We now have ten new people, that almost doubles our original population. Not to mention, they can keep a kid alive all this time. I’m sure that I can get them to see things clearly. Especially if I have the daughter on my side."

I blinked a couple of times, trying to figure out what he was saying. Then I got it. He was going to use me to influence the guys so that he could take over the tribe. Ooh, this was getting juicy. I couldn’t wait for the show.

My only question was: who or what the hell is a seer?
