Chapter 366: Selene and Rhys

The woman on stilts continued to stare at me as if wanting to witness my death with her own eyes. It really was too bad for her that she stood a better chance of dying if she continued to stare at my crown than I did.

"You seem to like my flowers," I smiled at her, blinking innocently as Chang Xuefeng reached down and picked me up. Holding me on his forearm, he stared down the woman.

"Sorry," smiled the woman, her smile tight as she tried to make a good impression on Daddy. Too bad he was a one-woman man; otherwise, I might actually be worried. "She is just so cute. I haven’t seen a child in almost four years. They were the first ones to be taken out. I am just really surprised that you managed to keep her alive for so long."

Daddy raised an eyebrow and hummed while Tank scoffed at her. "That might say more about your incompetence than our competence," he snapped, rubbing my back gently. "I wouldn’t exactly be bragging about not keeping children alive if I were you."

"You don’t understand," sighed the woman, a look of pain on her face. "We couldn’t stop them." Her voice wavered a bit, trying to draw our sympathy, but she was really acting for the wrong audience.

"Stop who?" demanded Dimitri.

"The plants," shrugged the woman, wiping an invisible tear from her eyes. "Never had I ever thought that plants could be so dangerous. We couldn’t see the vines as they slipped into the tents. It only too less than a minute for them to wrap around a child and pull them out of their shelter. We tried to stop them, but the plants were relentless."

Stroking the vine that was wrapped around my wrist, I couldn’t help but applaud their ability to find prey.

"Eventually, after we understood just what was happening, we moved to some of the abandoned buildings, but it still didn’t stop the plants. And once the plants had consumed all the children..."

Pausing for dramatic effect, she looked around at the guys. "The plants are the only predators in the Garden of Evil."

"Garden of Evil?" I sneered, unable to help myself. Who was she to label all these sweet plants as being evil. I’m sure she had killed lots of things in her long life in order to eat. Even if she didn’t kill them herself. Hell, as we can see, even if she was vegan, she still killed plants. Maybe this was the plant’s form of revenge; did she ever consider that?

I bet she didn’t.

"Nothing good has ever come out of the jungle," announced a man, coming up behind the woman. He, too, was on stilts, the same height as the woman. In his arms were even more pairs, and I could see some people in the distance carrying extras. "If the plants don’t eat you, the velociraptors will."

I looked at Daddy when another unfamiliar term popped up in the conversation. Look. It wasn’t my fault that I didn’t attend school, and Père didn’t go out of his way to teach me anything. I was doing the best I could with what I had.

"Another dinosaur," said Daddy softly as he stroked my head. "Apex predators, hunt in packs, disappeared a few million years ago."

I blinked at that statement.

"Oh," I said at last, not sure what I should say. "Can I have one as a pet?" I continued.

There was a scoff from the man and woman in front of them, but I only looked at Daddy to get his response. "Please? You said that the next pet that I wanted, I could have. You can’t go back on your promise now."

"When?" asked Beau, cocking his head to the side as he tried to think of when they made that promise.

"Killer dolphins," reminded Luca with a sigh. "Fine," he continued, nodding at me. "If you want a raptor, then we can see what we can do. But if it snaps at you, we are putting it down. Agreed?"

"It won’t snap at me," I smiled at him. "So, agreed! Where can I find a velociraptor?"

"You are all insane," sputtered the woman as the man threw the stilts down on the ground in front of us. "You have to be joking."

"Sure," smiled Désiré. "Let’s go with dat."

"I am Rhys," announced the man, his face staring down Désiré as if he was looking at a threat. "I am Selene’s second in command, and her fiancé. You are lucky she found you, or you wouldn’t even know how you died."

"Really?" I said, cocking my head to the side. "Cause I’m willing to bet that I’ll die from a knife in the back before I die from anything else."

Chang Xuefeng let out a warning growl, a sound so deep and intimidating that Rhys took a step in front of Selene as if to protect her.

"You are not dying," Daddy announced; his words were so absolute I could feel the world reacting to them. Then again, I guess if the Angel of Death said that you weren’t going to die, then no one was stupid enough to challenge that.

"I know," I said, giving him a kiss on the cheek. "I’m not worried."

"You should be," hissed Selene, drawing everyone’s attention back to her. "Now, everyone up on stilts. I don’t know how you’ve managed to survive this long, but you need to be up higher. I won’t take you back to the tribe’s home if you aren’t on stilts. The plants remember scents and follow them like a dog. I won’t put everyone in danger simply because you were stupid."

Dante, Luca, and Chang Xuefeng looked at me, waiting for me to make a decision.

I must have taken too long because Rhys was hissing at us before I even managed to open my mouth. "It’s going to be nightfall soon. If we aren’t in the trees before then, we are going to die."

Shrugging my shoulders, I looked at Daddy. "Might as well have some fun while we are here."
