Chapter 368: The Right Path
As if we had reached an invisible marker, Selene suddenly came to a stop. Turning around, she looked the guys up and down before narrowing her eyes on me. I was beginning to think that Selene might hate kids as much as I did. She definitely was perfecting the ’death by glare’ look every time she stared in my direction.
"From this point on," started Rhys, nodding at the tribesmen behind us. "You are going to need to be blindfolded. We can’t have outsiders knowing our location. The safety and security of our entire tribe relies on our ability to keep it secret."
"Nows, I know you donna be blindfoldin’ me right now," purred Dimitri, but I could feel the suppressed rage simmering just under the surface. It suddenly hit me that the Sins had been in human form almost since the beginning.
They hadn’t been able to let the demon side of them out to play at all. Wrath couldn’t consume wrath as well when he was letting Dimitri always be in charge. None of the men could. Only the three Sins who had bound their souls to mine were a perfect blend between human and demon. The others, while they shared the same body, still had a divide.
Cocking my head to the side, I stared at Dimitri. "I’m sorry," I announced out of the blue. I was so lost in my own head that I didn’t take the time to realize just how much the guys were all sacrificing for me.
"For what, Kitten?" asked Dimitri, his eyes flashing red as Wrath pushed forward. "You don’t ever have to apologize to us for anything."
"Shit," grunted one of the tribesmen, looking at Dimitri like he had grown a second head. "Where did your accent go."
Not bothering to respond, Dimitri simply stared the man down, his eyes returning to their normal color.
"We’re good without the blindfolds," said Dante, cutting through the tension and confusion. "Thanks, though."
"I don’t think you understand," said Rhys, his face completely impassive. "If you don’t put on the blindfolds, then you don’t get to go to the village. We will leave you alone, without food or shelter. Just how long do you think you are going to survive?"
"Longer than you," scoffed Chang Xuefeng, straightening his back.
Right. We weren’t here to play by the human rules. We were here to get what we needed before going back home and destroying Country M. I had to remember that.
Rhys raised the same machete that he had been using to chop up the vines and pointed it at Daddy’s neck. "It would almost be a blessing for you to die at my hand, rather than the jungle. But we have rules for a reason. It’s the only way we can survive. Either put on the blindfold, or we are going to part ways. The sun will be setting in less than half an hour, and we want to be home by then."
"Then don’t let us keep you," agreed Luca, a calm smile on his face. "I wouldn’t want something to happen to you and yours and have us be blamed for it."
"Heaven forbid," agreed Beau, getting down off the stilts. Ronan, like he had just received a pardon or something, jumped off his stilts and threw them at the nearest tribesman.
"Yous gonna have ta kill me if you want me on does again," grumbled Ronan, wiping his hands on his pants.
"I know you don’t understand, and that we are just as much strangers to you as you are to us, but you need to trust us. This place isn’t like anything that you have experienced before. If you want to live, you need to come with us. Think of your daughter," begged Selene, her hand resting on Chang Xuefeng for a moment before he flung it off.
"First, she isn’t my daughter," replied Chang Xuefeng with a sigh. Personally, I couldn’t help but smile brightly at him. "Second, she is the one who makes the decisions. If you have an issue, tough shit."
I wanted to clap, but I simply gave Daddy a kiss on the cheeks even as I smirked at Selene. "You better get going. I don’t want to keep you out past your bedtime."
With a huff, Selene snapped her fingers, causing Rhys and the rest of the tribesmen to straighten their backs and disappear off the path and into the jungle.
"You..." she stared, looking over all the guys. Once again, her gaze brushed over me like I was invisible. "You don’t have to follow her to your deaths. Please, think things through. I can keep you safe."
"I’ll take death first," grunted Salvatore with a bright smile on his face.
"Wow," murmured Ronan, nodding his head as he clasped Salvatore on the shoulder. "You must have really pissed him off if he said four words in a row. Congrats! You’ve unlocked a whole new level of hatred."
With a huff, Selene spun around and disappeared into the foliage.
"Where to now, Princess?" asked Daddy once we were sure that the others had defiantly left.
Spinning around in a circle, I pointed in a random direction. If we were going to get lost, let’s get lost the right way. "That way," I announced, nodding my head. The entire jungle was calling to me, begging me to see it. There was no way we could go in the wrong direction with the world on our side.
Might as well have some fun.
The second we stepped off the path, the house appeared in front of us. "Holy shit," grunted Beau as he took a step on the bridge. "Did you know that it was going to be here?"
"Nope," I replied with a shake of my head. "But I think it’s the house’s way of telling me that we are on the right path."
"And what path is that, little Queen?" asked Tank, cocking his head to the side as he studied me.
"Our own."
