Chapter 365: Humans Never Change
Stepping forward, the moss turned a bit squishy, like it was covering something more than just solid earth. The stench of rot and decomposition drifted up, only to be pushed aside by the flower in my hand.
It was almost as if the flower was taking offense at the stench for reaching me.
"Thank you," I hummed, stroking the smooth, silky petals. "But I don’t mind the smell of decay."
The flower nodded happily even as Beau wrinkled his nose in disgust. "You might not, but it’s definitely not my favorite," grumbled the Sin as he looked around. "But I don’t see any bones."
"Bones?" I repeated, perking up a bit.
"It should take upward of 20 years for the human skeleton to completely decompose. Even in these types of conditions, it should still take more than four years. But there is nothing. Not a single bone, no flesh, and yet the stench of death still lingers," muttered Beau, crouching down to poke at the moss.
Right under his finger, where he was poking at the moss, a flower appeared, the center of it looking like a little head with sharp teeth. Before Beau could react, the flower lunged upward, biting the tip of his finger. Startled, Beau jumped back, retreating to the safety of everyone else.
However, wherever his blood dropped to the ground, more and more emerged until the entire area around us was covered in red and purple snapping flowers.
"Interesting," chuckled Chang Xuefeng. "Could they have consumed the people around them? Or those poor souls who fell to the ground when they died?"
Before Beau could remove his finger from his mouth and reply, there was a sound coming from in front of us. "Leave now!" someone called out, his voice echoing around the abandoned buildings. "If Death has your blood, there is no place you can go. It’s better to just lay down and let it eat you to death."
I raised an eyebrow as I looked at a pale Beau. "Don’t worry," I chuckled, reassuring my Sin. "They won’t bother you, will they?" I directed the second half of my sentence at the flowers. They simply swayed in the wind, like innocent fairies dancing on the breeze.
"You’re an idiot if you think that," announced a female voice this time. Turning to look at the direction of the sound, I saw a woman walking toward us on stilts.
"Now dere’s a fashion statement I canna understand," grunted Désiré as the woman got closer and closer to us. Seriously, the stilts must be at least five or six feet high, and she was walking on them like she was born to do it.
The woman looked down at us and scoffed like we were the stupid ones. "Touching anything green means death," said the woman, her face twisting into something pleasant as she looked and Dante, Beau, and Chang Xuefeng. "It might not happen fast, but it will happen. And when it does, not even your bones will be left."
Reaching into the leather bag she had slung across her chest, she threw a bottle at Beau. "Drink this; it’ll disguise your scent for a few weeks. I’ll make more and give you some when you need it. Death won’t be able to find you using your scent. As long as you keep taking it, you’ll survive."
Cocking my head to the side, I studied the woman. She was stunning. Long, curly brown hair was tied up in a high ponytail, her skin a sun-kissed golden brown color, and her proportions absolutely perfect. She was wearing something that looked like a strapless leather bra across her chest, leaving her flat stomach completely bare, and then a leather skirt wrapped around her waist completing the look.
The skirt was short, and all I could think was that there was no way I was walking under those stilts. Devil only knew what I would see if I looked up.
Shuddering at the thought, I hadn’t bothered to respond to her statement.
"No," replied Beau, the smile on his face completely gone as he caught the bottle. Without hesitation, he threw it back at the woman. She caught it easily, a look of confusion on her face.
"You don’t want to live?" she asked, her gaze soft and inviting. "I don’t mean you any harm. Humans are an endangered species right now; I just want to keep us all alive."
Beau didn’t even look at her again but simply walked over to my side. It wasn’t until his movement that she finally saw me. "Impressive. You nine have managed to keep a child alive for this long. That means you have some skill. My tribe is always looking for more people; you are more than welcome to join us."
Ah, we were back to calling me a child. Nice to know that no matter how much the world had changed, humans were still the same.
"Our second in command is bring over some of the smaller stilts. You’ll want to use them if you are coming any further into the old city. The bigger predators won’t come here during the day, so it will be safe to only be a couple of feet off the ground."
Once again, she looked a me, a trace of annoyance on her face as she looked me up and down. I knew what she was seeing. The kid in a short princess dress, white socks, black shoes, and a crown of flowers around my head.
In fact, her eyes seemed to be resting on my crown for a while now... and the jealousy in her eyes was almost impossible to hide.
"She is going to die," the woman announced, her voice flat as she continued to look at me like I was already a dead man walking. "No one can touch the flowers without dying. Even those who manage to pluck them won’t live past sunset."
Humming, I nodded my head, even as I caressed the vine around my wrist. "Hopefully, I’ll finally be able to get a good night’s sleep then," I shrugged casually, touching the flowers on my head. Nothing in this jungle would hurt me...
But I couldn’t say the same about the humans.
