Chapter 360: What Are You Waiting For?
I briefly glanced at the leathery bird giving me the side eye like I was the problem before burying myself in Chang Xuefeng’s reassuring embrace. His arms tightened around me before his wings emerged and encapsulated me even more.
Nothing was taking me from his arms, and I couldn’t help but smile even as the humans continued to scream.
"Just a little longer, Princess," murmured Chang Xuefeng, his head dipping so that I could hear him. "This ride won’t last forever."
At that moment, I almost felt disappointed. I liked the idea of spending eternity in this cocoon with just us. Then again, I also knew that I would quickly miss the rest of the guys. I would have to come up with a cocoon big enough for all of us.
The feeling of falling quickly came to a crashing stop, and the ship hit something hard.
Chang Xuefeng let out a soft grunt as he took the impact, pulling me up higher so that my feet we no longer resting on the deck.
"Well," announced Luca as Chang Xuefeng’s wings slowly opened, revealing a whole new world around us. "That was fun."
"Let’s do that again," chuckled Dimitri, even as he pulled out a knife for each hand, his eyes scanning the sky above us.
"Let’s not," replied Ronan. I turned around in Chang Xuefeng’s arms as he slowly lowered me back down, just in time to see Ronan cracking his neck from side to side. "Imma still waitin’ fer my stomach ta finish de drop."
Nodding my head in agreement, my thoughts were interrupted by an unfamiliar caw from a bird above.
"What did you call them?" I asked, watching as five enormous birds circled above us. Like vultures waiting for their supper, these birds continued to chatter with each other. Every once in a while, one swooped down, and I could see the massive beak that was easily half the length of my body.
"Pterodactyls," answered Dante as he strolled over to where I was standing. His eyes looked me over a few times, just to reassure himself that I was still alive and well. Satisfied that I was, he, too, turned his attention upward.
"Nows, ’ere’s me thinking dat the days of de dinosaurs were long gone," said Désiré. His tone might have been light and teasing, but the look on his face alternated between anger and concern.
"I donna think dat anything is out of de realm of possibility with Hattie around," chuckled Ronan as he gently shoulder bumped Salvatore and nodding his head off to the side.
"I am not the one to blame for this," I replied, pretending like all their sly movements had really gone over my head. Every last one of my guys was on guard, and I couldn’t blame them. If I wasn’t so sure that we were still in Country N, I would almost think that we were in another realm.
The humidity was stifling. While the humans had been drenched coming down the falls, I had been kept completely dry in Daddy’s arms. However, the second he removed his wings, the humidity hit me like a ton of bricks.
My clothes were now plastered to my body, and I felt like I could scrape a pound of water off my face and not even put a dent in the layer of moisture. It was disgusting, and I was desperate for a shower.
And that wasn’t even touching on the insects that were starting to buzz around me. Mosquitoes the size of my fist tried to land on my arm, only to be burnt to a crisp before it could. Tank’s eyes were narrowed, even as his hand was still consumed in fire.
A dragonfly the size of my arm buzzed around us, its beating wings sounding like a helicopter or something. When Tank was about to life his hand to take that one out, too, I stopped him. "They eat mosquitoes," I said with a shake of my head. "And anything that can eat those things is high on my list of things to keep around."
As if it understood my words, the beautiful purple and blue insect dropped onto my shoulder, its weight almost sending me staggering forward. Salvatore quickly caught me under my elbow and steadied me.
"A little warning next time," I said to my newest friend. It fluttered its winds just a bit as if to say sorry before settling down. Its fist sized eyes seemed to take in everything around me before it simply stopped moving altogether.
I was about to say something when I was quickly cut off.
"Ronan! Salvatore! I need help over here!" called out Sadie, a note of concern in her voice as she tried to move my men. The two demons in question didn’t bother to respond to her demand; they only continued to look at me to see what we were going to do next.
"Can’t make friends when you are out to destroy the world," I shrugged. My heart broke at the fact that I was turning my back on a woman who I liked, but if it came down to her and finally being able to go home, then I think the decision was obvious.
I couldn’t go home until the old world was completely gone... the house had made that clear. And, besides the guys, there was nothing I wanted more than to go home.
Looking around us, I could finally see what my ears couldn’t hear. Men and women were collapsed on the deck, some crying, others too stunned to actually move. Pieces of the ship’s railing had been destroyed, and some of the splinters had found themselves puncturing the humans.
Some were already dead. One human, in particular, was slumped against the mast, his head ripped back so much that the only thing keeping it on his shoulders was his spinal cord.
Sadie was crouched over another man, her hands pressing down on his wound, trying to keep his blood from spilling out.
No, I was no Angel of Death, but even I could see that the man was a breath’s way from crossing over.
"What are you waiting for?" screamed Sadie, her wild eyes going right over my head to land on Ronan. "I need help!"
