Chapter 359: Ever Been On A Roller Coaster?
It felt like I had just closed my eyes, surrounded by Ronan and Salvatore, when my stomach decided to drop.
"What the fuck?" I grumbled, my eyes so done that they didn’t even bother to open. "I’ve heard of no rest for the wicked, but surely to Devil, there has to be some limit?!? If I don’t get at least a three hour nap soon, I am going to destroy the world just to get a few hours of sleep."
There was a chorus of chuckles, but Ronan and Salvatore didn’t disagree. Trying my best to pry open my eyes, I had the feeling I was doing a fantastic impression of a drunk trash panda.
"Fucking Christ," I continued as my stomach seemed determined to fall out of my back. It was like we were going up fast, but that was impossible. Last I checked, we were still pinned between two mountains.
Flinging the bedsheets off of me, I stared at the door. I should go out there and figure out what was going on but at the same time...
"Do you want me ta go?" asked Ronan, tilting his head toward the door. Letting out a jaw-breaking yawn, I shook my head no. If something really was going on, I didn’t want us to be split up.
"Let’s go figure out the latest crisis, then I’ll figure it out," I grumbled. My brain wasn’t braining at the moment, and tears were flowing out of my eyes, but I could do this. Pulling out a banana lollypop, I stuck it in my mouth and rolled out of bed. "Someone had damn well better be dying."
-----
I know I hadn’t slept so long that it was actually night, but coming up from the belly of the ship to pitch black was a heady experience. It was almost like I had no idea which way was up or down, and my head was constantly spinning.
"Daddy?" I called out into the darkness. "Did I go blind again?" Letting out a long sigh, I stretched my arms out, trying to ’see’ what was in front of me. The sound of rushing water seemed to encase me in a world of my own, and it wasn’t until I felt a pair of arms wrapping around me that I realized that I wasn’t alone.
"I’ve got you, Princess," murmured Chang Xuefeng as he pulled me against his chest. "You don’t need to be worried."
"And the whole blindness thing?" I asked. Resting my head against his chest, I took a second to just listen to his heartbeat.
"Have you ever been on a roller coaster?" asked Luca, his voice coming from somewhere in the distance.
"No," I replied. There were a lot of reasons why I had never been on a roller coaster. But I had seen them enough on TV to have a general idea. Let’s just say that they never seemed to appeal to me and leave it at that.
"Ah, well," sputtered Luca, and I had to hold back a smile. "Then I guess you won’t get the analogy."
The water under us started to flow even faster, sounding like a fright train right before it past you. I could have sworn that I even felt the wind picking up, pushing us backward. However, Chang Xuefeng stood against the elements like an unmoving statute, protecting me from whatever was happening.
"We’s in de tunnel of love," chirped Dimitri as the ship started to creak and groan in protest. "’N you know what’s at de end of every tunnel?"
"No idea," I deadpanned as the humans nearby started to scramble for something. Since I couldn’t see a single thing, I really had no idea what was going on, but I was going to assume that it wasn’t necessarily a good thing.
"A waterfall," announced Sadie, her calm voice cutting through the panic.
"Okay," I shrugged, wrapping my arms even tighter around Chang Xuefeng. If shit was really going to be hitting the fan right about now, I suppose clinging on to the Angel of Death for life really wasn’t a bad thing.
"Just remember," chuckled Daddy as if he was reading my mind. "At the end of the day, I have wings."
There were a few gasps, but I didn’t know if they were a result of his statement or the roaring of a waterfall up ahead. "Hey, dickhead," sneered Dimitri, his voice coming even closer. "We all got wings."
"Speaking for the only wingless entity amongst us," I smiled tightly. "If any of you let me fall, I won’t fuck you for an entire month."
"I didn’t even know that option was on the table," murmured Luca, and I could feel a third hand caressing my head.
"It was on the table," I assured him. "But only if I live past this whole waterfall thing."
"Fair," grunted Beau. I had to admit, at times like this, knowing that everyone was around me made me feel happy. Like we could take on everything and survive as long as we had each other.
Suddenly, a bright light broke through the darkness, causing me to squeeze my eyes shut. "Fucking hell," I grumbled, slowly opening my eyes. But I had no time to enjoy the fact that I wasn’t blind because with the light came the exit...
"Hold on!" screamed Sadie, and I could see her clinging to Colt. Most of the humans had found something to tie themselves to the ship with, but I didn’t know if that was a smart thing or not.
After all, if the ship broke apart, then they would be going down with the ship.
My men weren’t nearly as bothered as the humans were. They all stood around me, their feet braced apart as they shifted with every movement of the ship. Luca and Dante were discussing something together, their heads bent low while Dimitri, Ronan, and Salvatore were playing rock paper scissors.
All of a sudden, we were flying. The ship was weightless underneath us as we were suspended in mid-air for a moment in time. Then the tip of the nose pointed downward, and we were gone. The rushing wish was like knives against my face, and I buried even deeper into Daddy’s arms.
Screams echoed around me, but what really caught my attention was Beau’s gasp of, "What the hell is that?"
Moving my head just a bit, I looked at the bird flying beside us. "I-" I started before quickly cutting myself off. "I have no idea."
"A pterodactyl," announced Chang Xuefeng like he was telling me that the earth was round or the sky was blue. The only problem was that I had no idea what that was. I had never even heard of the word before now.
"Oh."
