Chapter 357: Questions and Answers

As hard as it was, getting up the mountain was a lot easier than getting down it. I stood on the ridge, looking at the small boat beneath me, wondering what I should do next.

"Do you think that if I jumped, one of the guys would catch me?" I asked, tilting my head to the side as I studied the distance. Maybe if I had some way to warn them that I was contemplating jumping and for them to be ready, I would go through with it.

But the last thing I wanted to do was assume that some would see me falling. After all, we all know what happens when you assume something. Plus, I don’t think I would look good as a pancake.

"I wish that me and everyone up here with me return to the ship, safe and sound," smiled Luca as if reading my mind.

Fuck! A wish! Why didn’t I consider that option?

With a smile and a snap of my fingers, the four of us were back on the deck of the boat, none the worse for wear. Okay, so that was a lie. I was still bleeding from my hands, I had blood drying at the corner of my mouth, and I was so sore that even the thought of taking a single step forward made me want to cry.

But hey, at least we were back on the ship! That had to count for something.

"Everything okay?" asked Dante, his eyes narrowing as he took me in.

"Not really," answered Tank at the same moment that Luca replied, "Does everything look okay?"

Taken aback, Dante blinked at the three hostile faces pointed his way. "She needs Ronan or Salvatore," announced Dimitri, his eyes narrowing on the people who were starting to surround us.

"My darling dearest called?" purred Ronan, walking toward me like he didn’t have a care in the world. However, the second he actually saw me, the smirk on his face completely disappeared, and he was pushing people out of the way to get to me faster. "What de fuck?" he demanded, glaring at Luca for a second before wrapping his arms around me.

"You were supposed to look after her," hissed Salvatore, seeing the same thing Ronan was. For a moment, I was wrapped between the two men, their healing mist surrounding me just like their arms were. Feeling the warmth and love coming from the two of them, I melted in their arms.

"Sleepy time," I whispered, my eyes already starting to close. I had enough things knock me on my ass today that I didn’t care what time it was. I was going to bed and not waking up until tomorrow.

"Go to sleep," replied Chang Xuefeng. Ignoring Salvatore and Ronan, he leaned in between them, kissing me on the forehead before walking away. "I’m just going to have a chat with Luca. I’m sure that everything will be just perfect when you wake up."

Nodding my head, I let Ronan put me on Salvatore’s back as the two brought me down to our room. I was asleep before we even got to the first ladder.

"Now that she is being properly cared for," smiled Chang Xuefeng as he turned his attention to Luca, Dimitri, and Tank. "Let’s talk."

"Nope," replied Luca with a shake of his head. Looking around at everyone staring at them, practically begging from gossip on the mutants, Luca refused to discuss anything in their presence.

"Let’s find somewhere more private," suggested Dante, nodding his head toward the ship’s wheel. It was in a space all its own, and nobody had ever gone near it, too scared of the crow with razor teeth to venture into its territory.

"Fine," grunted Chang Xuefeng, his smile sharp enough to draw blood. "But I want answers."

"Funny," grunted Dimitri, giving Chang Xuefeng the same smile back. "So do the rest of us."

The seven men walked up the stairs, ignoring the survivors who were staring at them. "So, now that we are here, talk," instructed the Grim Reaper, all hints of civility gone. Even his body seemed to shift into a form that none of the other men had seen before.

His wings, now midnight black, stretched from his back, inciting gasps and screams of fear from the humans beneath them. A robe with a hood covered the rest of his body, and those who stared at him a little too long died a little inside that day.

"She is hurt," hissed the Grim Reaper, his eyes glowing white from under his hood. "My princess is hurt, and I am blaming you."

"Fair," nodded Luca. "But more than physically hurt, Hattie is emotionally exhausted. She has been going from one thing to another, and just when she thinks she has a handle on it, someone comes and hits her from behind."

"What is it this time?" asked Dante, his arms crossed in front of him as he stared over Chang Xuefeng’s shoulder at the humans who were still trying to get closer to them. He had never seen so many survivors with a death wish, but it was probably thanks to Sadie that they had even managed to live up to this point anyway.

"The house won’t let her go home," said Tank, his voice soft, but there was a hint of anger to it.

"We already know that," replied Beau. "So why is it hitting her now?"

"Because the house was writing for us at the top of the mountain," answered Tank. Looking at where they just were, he let out a long sigh. "Hattie tried to go through the front door, and it sent her flying backward. She ended up coughing a lot of blood."

"De house did Dat?!?" hissed Désiré, his hands clenched into fists at his side.

"Yup," replied Dimitri. "Even wrote us a sweet little note."

"What did it say?" asked Chang Xuefeng. The angel was trying to push back his primal nature, but he was having a hard time controlling his feelings. He could still see the blood on Hattie, causing him to have flashbacks to Camp Hell and the fights.

"This world doesn’t need heroes; it needs villains to destroy it so that it can be rebuilt," recited Luca, handing the note over to the angel. "Apparently, we’ve been too nice."

"Well," sighed Beau with a shrug. "That’s easy to change."
