Chapter 356: Set The World On Fire
I wasn’t even halfway up the cliff when my muscles started screaming in protest. My hands were cramping in pain, but I ignored everything. My entire world seemed to narrow down into one mindless chant.
Hand, hand, foot, foot, push up. Hand, hand, foot, foot, push up. Hand, hand, foot, foot, push up.
The words flowed from my mouth even as Tank and Dimitri tried to distract me. The two men were on either side of me, keeping up with my pace. Not going any faster and not falling behind. Luca stayed directly behind me.
I knew it was so that he could catch me before I plunged to my death, but I refused to be weak. My house was up there, and by everything holy and unholy, I was going to get my answers, even if I had to burn everything down and start from scratch.
"It’s okay, Sweetness," murmured Tank. I could feel him looking at me, but it only made me more frustrated. This was so easy for the three of them that it seemed like I was the only one struggling. I didn’t want to be the weakest link. I knew I was powerful... I just wasn’t strong.
"I’ve got this," I assured him, just as my foot slipped. Dimitri reached out and placed his hand on my ass, making sure that I didn’t fall. That would teach me to concentrate on anything but my rhythm.
Hand, hand, foot, foot, push up. Hand, hand, foot, foot, push up.
It seemed to take forever, but eventually, I was at the top of the mountain. My weak legs gave out, and I collapsed on the grassy summit.
"Is dat de house?" asked Dimitri, his voice astonished as he looked at what I had seen.
"Yup," I grunted, clenching my hands into fists and ignoring the blood that was still coming out of them. I think that what pissed me off more was the fact that there were two wolves lying on my front porch like they had no care in the world.
One was pitched back and obviously guarding the much smaller silver wolf. They looked at me suspiciously, like I was the unwanted intruder.
Ever so slowly, I climbed to my feet, shaking off Tank’s hand when I was finally steady.
Tink splashed happily in the moat as if welcoming me home. His small chirp of happiness lightened my mood for a moment.
But it was only for a moment. The second I stepped foot on the bridge leading to the house, I was flung back by some sort of force. It was like all my strings had been cut as I landed on my back, feet away from where the guys were still standing. Rolling over, I coughed up a bunch of blood.
"Hattie!" screamed Luca as he rushed to my side. I felt his hands tremble as he carefully searched me over for injuries. "Fucking hell. We shouldn’t have left the two healers down there. Fuck the survivors, Hattie needs them more."
Dimitri growled softly. Palming his knife, he threw it at the house, only to meet with the same forcefield that I had. With a low thud, the knife returned to him harmlessly.
"What de fuck is goin’ on?" he hissed, his eyes narrowing on the animals who had come to their feet. "Dat’s our house."
"Is it?" I asked, accepting Luca’s help to get on my feet. Swaying slightly, I leaned against him, no longer caring about my image. "I’m beginning to wonder about that." However, the moment those words passed my lips, I could feel the house’s emotions as it hunched over as if struck.
"Are you still mine?" I demanded, not caring that I looked crazy arguing with a building.
I could have sworn that I felt the house nodding its head. "Okay," I sighed, already giving in. "Then what do I have to do to be able to come home?" My voice came out like a whine, but I really couldn’t help myself. I had no idea what was going on, and my only sanctuary seemed like it was turning its back on me.
Suddenly, a piece of paper appeared in Tank’s hands. "You aren’t finished. The world is still standing."
Looking down at the note, Tank’s brows furrowed. "What does that mean?"
"Clearly, I can’t get home until I do something," I grumbled, feeling the house’s approval of my words deep in my heart. "The world’s still standing." I turned that phrase over and over again in my head, wondering just what the house meant by it.
Wasn’t it a good thing that the world was still standing? After everything that had been thrown at it, it was a testament to its strength to still be turning.
Or was it not supposed to turn?
Another note appeared, this time in my hands. "The world doesn’t need heroes; it needs villains to destroy it so that it can be rebuilt," I read out loud, looking up at Luca. "Any ideas?"
Luca hummed and nodded his head as he reread the note. "Yeah," he said. "Apparently, we’ve been too nice lately. I think it is time to remind everyone just why we are the seven deadly sins."
"Meh," grunted Dimitri with a shrug as he bent down and picked up his knife. "I didn’t like bein’ de hero in de first place. De villain suits me dat much better."
Blinking, I looked over at Tank.
"I..." I started before quickly stopping myself. I had a general idea of what the house was getting at, but at the same time, I didn’t think I was being a hero. At least, no one that I had met in O City would claim that I was.
Was it because I considered Sadie my friend?
No, the house wouldn’t let me go home even before I met her. It must be something else.
"We are behind you every step of the way," smiled Tank, reaching over to caress my cheeks. "But why don’t you start having a bit of fun again? You’ve been working too hard and haven’t been able to play at all."
Luca nodded his head in agreement. "Come on, Princess, let’s go set the world on fire."
