Chapter 317: A Chance Of A Lifetime

When I remained silent, Jonas went to the door of the conference room and stuck his head out. "You can bring them in," he announced to the guard on the other side of the door.

This man was really well prepared for this meeting, I only had to wonder if it would end up going the way he wanted it to.

Retreating back to his seat, he pulled out the chair and sat down like a king on his throne.

As I continued to lick on my sucker, I absently patted Tank, reassuring him that nothing was going to happen that we didn’t want it to. And how could it? It wasn’t like Tank was an actual dog, capable of going from owner to owner and obeying commands.

He was one of my chosen men, one of my hellhounds, one of my soulmates.

Turning his massive head, Tank rested his jaw on my shoulder as he stared down at the men and women coming into the conference room. At least now I knew why we were at such a big table. I thought 20 chairs for just the two of us were overkill, but it turned out that not even they were enough to accommodate everyone.

"Ladies and gentlemen," started Jonas before I cut in.

"Boys and girls, people of all ages. Welcome to the Carnival of the Damned, where mystical feats will be performed before your very eyes! But always make sure that you know what you are getting yourself into here. If you don’t escape while you can, you might never be able to leave this room again."

"Lucy!" exploded Jonas, slamming his hand on the table as he glared at me. "That is enough. This is not your house; these are not your people. Either conduct yourself in a dignified manner or get the fuck out of my building."

"Commander!" I shouted, pushing Tank out of the way so that I could slam my hand against the table as well. "I will!"

Then the commander looked at me like I was crazy; I smirked at him before sitting back down in my chair. "If yelling and screaming was how you conducted yourself in a dignified manner, then you only had to explain that to me. I’m so sorry I was speaking in an indoor voice. Please, keep going."

None of the people in the room so much as looked at me, or, if they did, it was with a look of disgust on their faces before adjusting their position and looking straight ahead again.

"Lucy Knight has proven to be... a detriment to the safety and security of New Dawn Sanctuary. She willfully goes against an order from her superior, disappears at random times, and allows her K9 to do her patrols instead."

You could hear a pin drop as I now became the center of attention of everyone with a stick up their ass.

"Keep going," I insisted, waving my hand at Jonas. "You know you want to."

There was no point in my wasting my breath speaking to people who wouldn’t listen to a word I said. Let them believe what they want. And when it all went to shit, and all they could do was cry, I would be there laughing at them.

"Tank, on the other hand, is one of the greatest assets to have ever entered our base. Not only has he found a series of over thirty holes that the rebels have been using to enter and leave the Sanctuary undetected, but he is also a fire power user," smirked Jonas as now everyone was looking at Tank.

However, the good boy wasn’t sparing the room so much as a look as he licked my cheek.

"Let them have their fun," I smiled, grabbing his face and rubbing it between my hands. "And when they are done, I’ll let you eat one or two of them. Does that sound good?"

Tank huffed, his version of a laugh, before backing away from my hands and coming to sit beside me.

"Lucy, could you show us what you do with Tank?" asked Jonas, his face covered in a bright smile as if he had me backed into a corner.

"I do a lot with Tank," I replied with a smile of my own. "Most of which I’m sure is illegal in a few states, so you might have to be a bit more specific."

"You are a sick woman," sneered one of the other women in the room as she gave me a look of disgust. "You don’t deserve to have him. No matter what happens today, you aren’t walking out of this room with that dog."

"You are more than welcome to try," I agreed nicely. See, I could play nicely with others when I wanted to.

"The fire trick," sighed Jonas. "Give the command that will cause Tank to be engulfed in flames."

"Are you sure about that?" I asked, pulling out my lollypop and looking at the commander. The room was absolutely packed, and yet they were asking me to set it on fire? I really do think that they have a couple of screws loose.

"Yes," hissed Jonas, the smile on his face slipping as he started to get frustrated. "Show the others what they have to accomplish in order to win the bet."

Nodding my head, I looked over at Tank. Placing my right hand on the very top of his head, I smiled as bright orange and blue flames sparked against his silky coat.

Sliding my hand down his neck and back, the flames continued to ignite under my palm before spreading down both sides of Tank’s body. By the time I was done touching him, he was a dark shadow at the heart of a deadly flame.

"Who wants to touch?" I purred, looking around at the room. This was hellfire. Anyone dumb enough to touch it would be consumed in a matter of seconds. But hey,... might as well be nice and let them pet the pretty puppy before they died.

There was a sifting of feet as everyone turned to look at Jonas. "This is your challenge. If you can cause Tank to look like that, then you will officially be paired with him for the rest of his life. This is a chance of a lifetime; make sure you grab it with both hands."
