Chapter 316: Rebel Without A Cause
Jonas stared me down from the head of the conference table, waiting for me to say something. Unfortunately for him, that wasn’t going to happen.
After ten minutes of me sucking on a lollypop and leaning against Tank, Jonas finally cracked. "You are out of uniform," he informed me, his jaw clenching so hard that I could see the vein in his temple throbbing.
"No, I’m not," I assured him, patting down my skirt. "This is my uniform. See? I even put on combat boots to prove that I mean business."
Today, I decided to play with some color, and my normal black dress was now in navy blue with white ruffles at the edges. My hair was up in pig-tails with white ribbons, and while I was wearing black combat boots, I was also wearing white thigh-high socks.
"Look, I don’t know who you are trying to seduce, but it really won’t work. Put on your uniform, and I won’t have to write you up," sighed Jonas as he closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead as if he were getting a headache.
Rolling my eyes, I pulled out my lollypop. Ever since Daddy had given me one to prove that this reality was real, I refused to be without one. It was like there was a direct link between the two in my mind, and I was able to be myself again.
"That’s a stupid thing to say," I grunted, looking at the stupid male. "I don’t dress to please anyone but me. And if someone is an idiot enough to be seduced by my outfit and think that I am wearing it for them, then at least Tank will get some fresh meat for dinner."
Jonas looked at me like I was speaking a different language, and maybe, to a guy, I was. But I also knew that women dressed how they wanted, how they felt the most comfortable and confident. Men might have armor, but women had five inch heels, and we weren’t scared to use them.
"It doesn’t matter what you think; either get changed, or you are off of the security team. Tank, of course, would be expected to stay on, only with a new handler. The choice is yours," sighed the man who thought he was in charge.
"Ah," I nodded, putting the lollypop back in my mouth. "So that was your end game. You want Tank, but you don’t want me. Haven’t you figured out yet that we can’t be separated?"
"You and Tank are not the same being. He is part of the advanced security team, and you are dressed like a pedophile’s wet dream. You have two minutes to get into uniform, or I will have a security team drag you out of New Dawn Sanctuary before you manage to finish your candy."
Crossing his arms in front of his chest, Jonas looked down his nose at me, clearly expecting me to cower in fear.
"Let’s play a game, shall we?" I asked, cocking my head to the side. "You can call anyone in here and see if Tank has the same reactions to them as he does to me. Go ahead. We’ll wait here."
Pulling out one of the chairs, I sat down with Tank at my feet. He wasn’t lying down; in fact, he was standing in front of me, his enormous body blocking anyone from getting to me.
Since I had that dream, the guys had really doubled down when it came to protecting me. I didn’t go anywhere alone. Even now, in this conference room, I could feel Ronan’s eyes on me. And I knew that if he had eyes on me, it was through the scope of his sniper rifle.
"And if I win?" asked Jonas, coming to his feet. The smile on his face told me that he had already calculated my response and was pleased that I was playing right into his trap. But seriously, who the hell was dumb enough to gamble against the devil?
"Didn’t you already say it?" I asked, somewhat bored. "If I win, things stay the same. If you win, then you get to keep Tank and toss me out the gates. Isn’t that what you wanted?"
"I just wanted to make sure that we were all on the same page. I didn’t want to win and have you change your mind at the last minute."
"I never go back on my word," I said, each word pulled out of me as I clenched my teeth. "My word is my bond, which is more than I can say about you. Had any more holes in the wall lately? What about ’water main explosions’? Have you had any more of those?"
Yeah, that was the official response. One of the old world water mains exploded, which caused the earth to shake. But everything was okay. There was nothing the least bit sketchy going on.
"Are you trying to imply something?" hissed Jonas as I stepped on his landmine. Interesting. I wonder how he justified everything in his head. "Are you part of the rebels? Is that your purpose in coming here? Are you here to destroy us?"
"Wow," I purred, a bright smile on my face. "Paranoid much?"
"And yet, I still can’t help but notice that you haven’t answered my question," snarled Jonas, his eyes flashing bright red before mellowing out to a muddy brown color.
"I don’t belong to anyone," I assured him. "Let alone rebels without a cause."
"If you don’t know anything about them, then how do you know they don’t have a cause?"
Rolling my eyes, I tried to remind the man about his original intention in bringing me here. "You wanted to make a bet with me?" I sighed. Not even candy made dealing with idiots any easier.
"We’re going to go back to your place amongst the rebels after," grunted Jonas, nodding his head like he had already discovered my deep dark secret.
The poor man was really barking up the wrong tree.
