Chapter 236: To The Victor

The sound of boots striking the ground gave way as Adam and Réne’s army let loose a bone-curdling war cry. Crows and other birds, who had decided to watch the show in case there was any food to scavenge, took to the skies, their own cries melding with the men.

Some men raced forward while others, unable to keep up the speed for such a long distance, fell behind. It was like something out of a movie where the rebels attacked the government army, knowing that they would probably not survive but not willing to back down either.

"So stupid," I sighed as a cup of sweet tea appeared on a table beside the swing. When I didn’t immediately pick it up, the house nudged it forward a bit until it was perching precariously on the edge.

Snapping it up before it fell, I took a sip and sighed. It was exactly how Elizabeth had made it, and even though it was cold, I felt the warmth coming from it. I felt her warmth. Humming happily, I couldn’t hold back my smile as Dimitri stepped off the step and dropped his shoulders.

What happened next was not something I had ever expected to see. Instead of Dimitri being the dominant body or Wrath taking over to win the fight, it was like they decided to combine their strengths to create a whole new creature.

Tattoo-like marks started at his hands and flowed up his arms and down his entire body, lighting up for a second under Dimitri’s clothes before settling down. Some of the lines were thick, while others were thin, and each one of them looked like one swirl connecting to another in an almost dizzying pattern.

However, instead of the black ink I was expecting, these marks looked like living fire as they gently pulsed. There were no horns or a tail to tell me that Wrath was front and center but rather a perfectly balanced equation between human and demon.

The man in front of me was an absolute marvel of strength and beauty, and for a brief second, I couldn’t think of anything except how much I wanted to taste his markings.

"Later," promised Dimitri as he smirked at me from over his shoulder. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought he was reading my mind, but chances were he could just feel my eyes trailing over his body. "Yous let me deal with dese people and I be showin’ you just what I can offer ma reine."

Shrugging my shoulders, I took another sip of tea before closing my eyes. I knew this wasn’t a challenge for Wrath, but at the same time, I could also understand his need to prove something to me.

After all, he had rejected Luci, and this was his way of proving that he was willing to do anything for me. Unlike for her, he was willing to kill, to maim, and to destroy anyone who thought they could take what was mine.

Humming slightly with a nod of my head, I looked at Wrath. "To the victor, go the spoils," I called out. And, while I might have been speaking to Dimitri, every last one of the men... my men... raised their heads and looked at me.

"Well," announced Dante as he cracked his head from side to side. Rolling up his sleeves, he took a set of brass knuckles from his black cargo pants pocket and fit them onto his right hand. "I guess that settles that. I’m kind of wishing that they brought more men... made it a challenge or something."

"It don’t matter how many men dey brought," announced Ronan, his eyes flashing open as royal blue markings covered his entire body. They even went up his neck but left his face alone. "A kill is a kill, and ’Attie donna specify any numbers."

With a flash of bright blue eyes, letting everyone know that Sloth was more than happy to wake up and play with the little humans, Ronan disappeared into thin air.

"He can do that?" I asked, blinking up at Luca. Both Luca and Greed nodded their heads as swirls of forest green markings made their way around his body. As if to make sure that it was done properly, Luca took off his shirt and admired his chest.

"Don’t be fooled," advised Luca as all the swirls cumulated into the center of his chest. While it was somewhat abstract, I could have sworn I saw a heart with a crown on top nestled right over top of where his human heart was. "Ronan can be just as deadly as the rest of us... if he so desires."

"And I assume he so desires?" I purred, the men more than good for my ego.

"Pet," purred Désiré, and he stretched his arms over his head, revealing an eight-pack of abs that looked just as good as Luca’s. "With what ye said? Dere ain’t no question of desires. If it means we gets you alone? We’d level de world in yer name."

Tank hummed, his body not changing like the others had. However, his eyes told me he was just as interested as the rest of the men. "You just sit there and enjoy your tea," he smiled at me. Walking over, he placed a single kiss on my forehead before meeting with the rest of the guys down at the bottom of the porch.

"So," asked Chang Xuefeng. "Are we counting heads or collecting them? We don’t want anyone’s numbers to be off."

"We’s collect dem," smirked Dimitri as the first set of footsteps echoed on the bridge. "And de bodies can go to Tink fer a midnight snack."

The rest of the men nodded their heads in agreement.

To me, it didn’t matter who had the most number of kills, everyone would be getting the same reward. These men were mine, and it was about time I showed them that.

Dimitri let out a low string of curse words under his breath as he felt his brothers coming up behind him. This was supposed to be his way of showing his woman what she meant to him. Some men gave their wives flowers, others chocolate.

But nothing so mundane would work for his Kitten. She deserved only the best, and that meant the heads of her enemies on display and their hearts at her feet.
