Chapter 235: A Matter of Pride
"You donna need ta be worryin’ about our bed, mon bon frère," called out Désiré, his voice a soft purr that still managed to reach the ears of his old friend. "We’s be likin’ our bed just fine."
"Give us your supplies and no one needs to die," repeated Réne, his eyes trying to make out the details of the men he used to call his brothers. ’Mon bon frère’, my good brother. Fuck him. If they were such good brothers, then they wouldn’t have left him alone while they went sniffing after some chick that didn’t care about them at all.
"We heard you the first time," called out Dante, even as Pride scoffed inside of his head. "Maybe you should try coming up with something new."
"Who the fuck are you?" demanded a second man as he came to stand beside Réne. The man was obviously built differently from Réne, and even with Réne’s size and muscles, he was still a lot smaller. "Why do you sound familiar?"
"Adam?" called out a young girl’s voice. All the men and women on the other side of the hill stiffened when they heard her. "Is that you? Long time no see! I have a friend who would love to be reintroduced to you if you have the time!"
Eve reached forward, grabbing Adam’s arm in a tight grip. "Why is she here?" she asked, her soft voice having an edge of steel to it that it normally lacked.
"That is Hattie," answered Sophia when none of the men bothered to speak. "She is the girl we were telling you about, the one with the spirit powers."
"What are you waiting for?" asked Hattie’s voice through the radio. "You have a standing invitation to come play. My boys will be so disappointed if you back down now. What do you say, little soldiers? Wanna come and play?"
"Fuck this shit," growled Adam. The air around him turned tense as he took a moment to study everything in front of him. There might be more men than originally calculated, but that didn’t mean that the extra five could beat an entire army of men.
They had the numbers on their side, and even if there were a few casualties on their side, it was acceptable for the greater good. Anyone who fell would be considered a martyr, someone who gave up their lives so that everyone could have a better world.
The silence continued to stretch out as he watched the tiny girl swinging back and forth on her swing like this wasn’t a call to war.
Holding up his hand, he heard the men and women behind him snap to attention. While not everyone had the same training as his personal team did, they at least knew how to point and shoot a gun.
"Look at how cocky they are," he called out, his eyes never leaving the scene in front of them. "They think they are gods or something, but we know better, don’t we? They are not gods but rather humans. And do you know what humans do?"
"They bleed!" shouted the men behind him, raising their guns in the air as they repeated their phrase over and over again. "They bleed! They bleed! They bleed!"
"Humans who play god do what?" screamed out Eve as she stood back to back with Adam.
"They bleed! They bleed! They bleed!" The chanting was so loud the very earth around them shook with the sound.
"That is right," murmured Eve softly as she raised her chin and looked at the army in front of her. "They bleed. And what happens when they bleed?"
"We win! We win! We win!" shouted the men and women, bright smiles on their faces as they beamed at Eve. Gone were the nerves and the fear of dying at the hands of the enemies. Instead, Adam now had men and women practically giddy to run forward and rip the heads off of Hattie and her men.
"Kill them, and their supplies are ours," reminded Adam. "And why should we have to steal what is ours? Run straight, run true, and don’t stop until you are on the other side of them."
The army fell silent, their eyes laser focused on the nine men in front of them. They dismissed the child as nothing more than an inconvenience. But a single bullet would take her out of their misery as much as anyone else.
"Make them bleed," shouted Eve as she raised her hand at the same time as Adam.
"Make them die!" finished Adam as both he and Eve dropped their arms at the same time. Like a damn breaking, the 250 men and women of Réne’s naval base rushed forward, ready for battle.
-----
"Are you sure they have done this before?" asked Dante as he raised an eyebrow at Luca. Line upon line of men and women charged at them. Hell, none of them would even have to aim before taking a shot, and they would still manage to take out a target.
Seriously, who trained them to fight like this? It was worse than shooting fish in a barrel.
Luca sighed and shook his head. "I really don’t know," he admitted with a shrug. "But between you and I, I was hoping for a bit more of a challenge. As it stands, Dimitri is going to take them out all by himself."
"That’s cause there is a side bet going on," chuckled Gluttony, his eyes flashing orange for a moment. That demon loved to have side bets for everything. "Whoever kills the most will get a prime spot in bed tonight. Dealer’s choice, so to speak."
Both Dante and Luca straightened their backs even as Hattie rolled her eyes and let out a huff of laughter. "Really?" hummed Dante, his eyes flashing black as Pride pushed his way forward. "Well, if it is a competition, I will need to participate; after all, it is a matter of pride."
Beau snorted as he looked over his shoulder at Dante. "Then you better hope that Wrath will leave some alive for you to play with."
