Chapter 237: You Missed

Before the first man could even get across the bridge, Dimitri was in front of him, a somewhat deranged smile on his face. However, before he could lift up his knife to take the man’s head, a hole blossomed in the middle of his forehead.

"Ronan!" cursed Dimitri as he looked up and around to see where the connard was lying in wait. That was supposed to be his kill! Not Ronan’s!

"You snooze, you lose," chuckled Ronan as his voice seemed to be coming from all sides. "De first kill is mine!"

Letting out a frustrated hiss, Dimitri gripped the muzzle of the next soldier as the idiot took aim. Pulling him forward, he brought his arm up to stab the little soldier’s neck. But before his knife could taste any blood, Gluttony was there, taking his kill.

"What de fuck?!?" growled Dimitri as he looked around at his brothers. Each one of the fuckers was just standing there, their arms crossed in front of their chests as if they were watching a good show.

"Oh," muttered Beau, his head cocked to the side as he blinked at Dimitri. "I’m sorry. Did I take your kill? I guess that is one for Sloth and one for me. Better luck next time."

Letting out a roar of rage, Dimitri didn’t even bother with the body in his arms, tossing it over the bridge and into the moat like the garbage it was.

"De next one is mine," he vowed softly, his head bent forward as he focused on the man racing toward his death. Determined not to let another brother take it from him, Dimitri raced forward, stabbing the man in the stomach as he dragged his knife upward.

"Sorry, mon frère," chuckled Dante as he whispered in Dimitri’s ear. "But I believe you said that only the heads matter and this one is mine." Holding up the head in his hand, Dante smiled brightly even as the body of the dead human collapsed between the two men.

"You are doin’ dis on purpose," hissed Dimitri, his eyes flashing bright red as his canine teeth elongated.

"Are you just figuring that out now?" purred Luca as he raced past, slicing through the neck of the next man over the bridge. Taking the head, he tossed it onto the porch while also tossing the body in the moat for Tink.

The house, amused with everything going on, formed bins with each man’s name in bright letters over top. The head Luca just threw over landed in the bin under his name, and a bright one glowed in the front of the box.

There was a moment of silence as the men’s mouths dropped and their eyes widened. "I think the house is cheering you on," chuckled Hattie as she took another sip of her tea and started to swing back and forth. "And so far, only Luca had a head in the game."

It was as if her words unleashed hell on earth as the men, with demons in their eyes, swung back around to face the army that was still running toward them. Stupid humans... didn’t they understand that once they stepped foot in the Devil’s playground, there was no going back?

Their leaders certainly had since Adam, Bishop, and Réne were still standing on top of the hill with their women at their sides.

But wasn’t that always the case with cannon fodder?

----

I couldn’t help but laugh as head after head fell into the bin with one of my men’s names on top of them. Like a basketball going through the net, the house continued to keep track of the dead. It was like the house was having just as much fun as the guys were with this little challenge.

However, it really didn’t seem to be challenging enough, seeing that in under ten minutes, there were already over a hundred heads. Even Tink seemed to be getting cranky with the number of deaths going on around him.

At first, he was smiling and slapping his tail as body after body appeared in front of him. But now that he was running out of hiding spaces to put the bodies, his tail was slapping in frustration.

"Just put what you don’t want on the bank," I called out, knowing the house would clean up after the gator. However, no one was going to touch Tink’s territory, not even to clean, without his express permission.

The gator turned to look at me for a moment before nodding his head and tossing the headless body in his mouth over onto the bank.

Unfortunately for me, it seemed that I was enjoying myself too much because, without anyone noticing it, two men managed to not only cross the moat but appear on the porch in front of me.

"Call off your men, and we won’t kill you," announced the first soldier, his mouth covered with a cloth as if he didn’t want me to know his identity.

"That’s impressive," I smiled at him as I took a sip of my sweet tea. "I really didn’t think anyone had it in them to get past the guys."

The two soldiers, their guns already raised and trained on me, shifted them slightly. Two shots rang out, and two bullets passed by on either side of my head so close they managed to gouge out a trail of flesh and blood before they disappeared behind me.

I froze for a second, the pain in my face taking a moment to register. "Call off your men, or we won’t miss a second time."

Well, now I was pissed. Ever so carefully, I set my glass down on the table and hopped off the swing. I could feel my hot blood pouring out of the wound even as I pulled out a lollypop from my space.

The soldiers in front of me, realizing that they might have made a mistake, looked at each other, their eyes wide as they silently communicated. However, instead of doing the smart thing and returning the same way they arrived, they decided to double down.

This time, I could feel the bullets entering each one of my shoulders before quickly exploding out the back.

"You missed," I smiled brightly at them. "But that is fine. I won’t."
