Chapter 234: You Made Your Bed
"That isn’t the building you described," announced Adam as he cocked his head to the side.
The army was on the other side of a hill, keeping the landmass between them and the... house in front of them. It was big enough that it could hide them from anyone watching from the house, and they needed to regroup.
"That wasn’t there when we left," murmured Sophia as she looked worriedly at Bishop. "Could this just be part of an illusion? She is a spirit user, after all. It would make some sense if she could make us see things that weren’t there."
"That’s a lot of energy for a little girl," replied Eve with a shake of her head. "Why would she be willing to make herself vulnerable like that?"
"To stop anyone from trying to get inside," grunted Bishop with a nod. There was no way Hattie had enough power to keep the illusion forever, and if she was trying to play dress up as the Devil, then it would make sense if she wanted the outside to be scarier than before. "I mean, it looks scary if you didn’t know it was nothing more than an illusion."
"Are you sure that we are even in the right place" asked Eve as she took a pair of binoculars from Adam and looked through them. The exterior of the house was black and looked like something out of a horror movie rather than reality. The exterior windows were all broken, and the storm shutters were hanging on by a single screw and a prayer.
"It’s the right place," nodded Bishop. "I have lived there too long not to know my way home."
"And the moat?" asked Adam, bored, as he took the binoculars back from Eve. "Was that always there? Or is that a new addition?"
"Moat?" gasped Sophia as she stuck her head over the top to see better. Bishop, however, quickly pulled her back down so as not to give away their location.
"Illusion," sighed the angel as he looked around. More than 200 men and women had followed them here, and it was much too late to turn back or try to get more information. They were damned if they did and damned if they didn’t.
The only choice they had was to keep going forward and hope to god that not everyone died.
Or they got the supplies. Death was an acceptable outcome as long as they got the supplies they needed to keep going. Even angels had to eat at some point in time.
The radio, saved from the EMP thanks to the basement of the CDC being so well reinforced, crackled to life where it rested on Adam’s hip.
"Do you want to play?" asked a female voice. The innocent question was enough to raise goosebumps on the arms of everyone around them. "Come on, play with me. I’m waiting..."
-----
The house, as if realizing just how bored I was waiting for something to happen, created a hanging swing on one side of the porch as my men stood waiting for the intruders.
I had no idea who they were or what they wanted. But if they were coming into my territory, then they needed to be ready for anything.
Still in their human forms, the nine men in front of my door couldn’t have been more different. Ronan was practically sleeping on Salvatore’s shoulder while the quiet man was standing there with his arms across his chest.
I would have to make time to spend with my quietest of demons. I didn’t want him to think I was neglecting him or anything, but it seemed like it was just one thing after another lately.
Wrath, determined not to let anyone beat him to his kills, was standing on the bottom step, his legs shoulder width apart with his arms crossed in front of him. He wasn’t moving an inch until he saw his new playmates, and I couldn’t blame him.
Things were always so much better when you could share them with friends.
"They’ll come when they come," I assured them, fighting back a yawn. Tank was standing one step above Wrath, leaning against the right railing, while Désiré was leaning against the left. Pride and Greed were standing behind my swing, acting like two sentries as they scanned the area around them for threats.
Only Gluttony and Chang Xuefeng were seemingly unaffected by everything that was going on. The house had conjured a game of checkers, and the two were battling it out on the board for supremacy.
"You know," I sighed, studying everyone around me. "This really is a nice family bonding exercise. Maybe we could do this once a month or so."
Chang Xuefeng and Pride hummed in agreement even as Wrath let out a low growl. "They need to hurry their asses up!" he whined, sounding like a child denied a treat. "It’s rude of them to keep us waiting for so long!"
As if they had heard his words, ten men on the other side of the hill away from the house stood up and looked at them.
"Give us your supplies, and no one needs to die," called out one of the leaders, his M4 resting in his hands with a practiced familiarity.
"Réne?" muttered Luca as he turned his head toward the men. "Is dat you, brother?"
"I’m not your brother," sneered the man.
----
On the outside, he was calm and composed, the image of a perfect leader. However, on the inside, Réne was absolutely panicking. Why were the others here? How did they get here? Wasn’t there only supposed to be five of them? When did that change to ten?
Question after question flew through his mind, but unfortunately, he had no answers to any of them.
"Well," grunted Dimitri, his deep voice easily flowing over the vast area between them. "Dat be makin’ things a bit easier, now don’t it? If we ain’t yer brothers, den you ain’t ours. But fer old times sakes, let me just be making a small suggestion."
"If you wanted to be my brother, you never should have left," called out Réne, his hand gripping his gun tightly. "This isn’t on me. You made your bed; now you lie in it."
