Chapter 233: Surrounded By Children
"Both," replied Réne, his face a blank mask. "I agree with both your points, so Eve and her team will go after the food, and you and your men will go after the weapons."
There was a chorus of grunts around the room as everyone agreed to the plan. Eve looked concerned for a moment before a wall came over her emotions, leaving her face blank. "Do we pick our own teams?" she asked, turning her attention to Réne.
"I don’t care what you do," shrugged the leader of the Naval base. "But whatever your plan is, you need to be prepared to leave the moment the sun rises. We can’t take the chance of meeting with a zombie, no matter what kind. The moment the sun comes, they go hide again."
Once again, there was a chorus of grunts as chairs scrapped against the floor. "Then I guess the only thing to do now is get a couple hours of shut eye," nodded Adam as he looked at his wife. "We’ll see you at 0500."
----
"I don’t like this," sighed Eve as soon as the door to their room was shut. "I can feel an impending sense of doom."
"A bit late for that particular spidey sense, now isn’t it?" smirked Adam as he pulled off his shirt and walked into the bathroom. There was no running water or power in the base, and it was starting to get to him. Was it too much to fucking ask for a hot shower?"
"Still blaming me for that?" sighed Eve. Tears started to fill her eyes as she looked at the man who was literally her other half.
"Yes, well, we all know forgiveness is bullshit. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be in this fucking place without hot water or electricity," replied Adam as his face twisted with rage for a moment. "But I am sorry for bringing it up. This whole apocalypse is messing with my head."
Eve nodded her head as she escorted Adam to the bed. Going behind him, she started to massage his tense muscles. "I know, and you weren’t wrong. Everything is my fault."
"Will you be okay without me tomorrow?" asked Adam as he laid his hand on hers, stopping her actions.
"I have no choice," sighed Eve. Closing her eyes, she rested her forehead against his upper back.
Adam hummed with a nod before reaching around and pulling Eve into his arms. The two of them lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. "At least you know you aren’t going to die," muttered Adam after a few minutes. "There is a solace in that."
Eve smiled at him. "All I ever wanted was forever with you. I’m just grateful that I get it."

"There’s good news and bad news," announced Wrath as he opened my curtains, waking me up out of dead sleep. Sloth rolled over with a moan as he pulled the covers up higher over his head. Tank, on the other hand, already had his gun pointed at Wrath’s head. "Which do you want first?"
"The bad news," I moaned, rolling over into Tank’s lap as my eyes threatened to pull me under again. I wanted sleep, Devil-damnit. Couldn’t Wrath take his annoying questions and come back later? Like in a month or two?
Or never?
Yeah, I voted for never.
"There is an army marching toward us even as we speak," announced Wrath like he was telling me the sky was blue. "It’s only a few hundred mixed demons and humans. Pride said that they probably wanted our supplies since some dude named Bishop is leading the way."
Nodding my head, I yawned. "And the good news?" I asked, not really caring.
"The good news is that there is an army marching toward us even as we speak," chuckled Wrath. Looking up, I saw his eyes glowing bright red as excitement coursed through him. He was almost like an excited puppy dog as he vibrated.
In fact, I could have sworn that his tail was frantically waving back and forth.
"How is both the good news and the bad news the same?" asked Ronan as he opened one of his eyes. "That doesn’t make sense."
"Cause it’s fantastic news for me," purred Wrath. "I don’t even have to leave the house! Violence and death are coming to me. It’s like my birthday and Christmas morning all rolled into one!"
"You celebrate Christmas?" Yup, that was it. That was what my tired brain took out of that whole conversation. Demons celebrated Christmas. Meh, why not?
"My second favorite holiday," nodded Wrath. "Of course, Halloween was my favorite, but I haven’t had a chance to go out in a while."
He wrinkled his nose at that statement, but I wasn’t touching it with a ten-foot pole.
"And why is it bad news?" I asked, desperate to change the subject.
Wrath, on the other hand, just looked at me like I was crazy. "It’s bad news for the army, of course! If they hadn’t come, they wouldn’t have died. I think that might make it bad news for them."
A long sigh was wrung out of me when I realized that I wasn’t about to go back to sleep. "Fine," I yawned, sitting up. "I’ll get dressed."
"Hurry up if you want to kill anyone!" called out Wrath as he practically sprinted out of my bedroom. "I call dibs on the first 150!"
"He’s a child," I sighed, shaking my head. And here was me thinking that Wrath was going to be some scary ass children. Oh well, at least I now knew what to get him for Christmas.
Ronan snorted as Tank got out of bed. "I gotta go," he announced a familiar gleam in his own eyes. "I can’t let Wrath have all the fun or get the credit."
"Seriously!??" I demanded, looking at Ronan, who was finally sitting up. "They do realize that the house would stop even an army from getting inside, right?"
"That would be boring, Princess," purred my man as he kissed my cheek. "Let your men go out and play. Whoever kills the most will be able to sleep in bed with you, and I am planning on destroying the whole competition."
"Children," I gasped; my mouth opened as I watched Ronan skipping out of the bedroom, leaving me alone in bed. "I am surrounded by children."
