Chapter 220: No Longer Alone

Greed smiled, but his eyes remained blank as he just shook his head. "Stupid humans," he sighed.

"Mon frère," purled Lust as he stepped out from behind Wrath. "You just made the worst mistake of your life."

It didn’t even take five minutes for Lust to have completely destroyed the human army in front of him. He didn’t even need his brothers’ help with it. A little bit of toxic mist, and everyone but the man in the middle fell to the ground, screaming and crying in pain.

"This is getting old," sighed Greed, echoing his meat sack’s previous statement. "Why can’t you just leave us alone? The world has almost finished burning. We could have always come back to play with you later... but no. You insisted that we kill everyone today. You realize that the death of your friends is all on your hands, right?"

"What’s your name?" asked Wrath, cocking his head to the side. "You stink like military, and those men were willing to die for you. You must be someone important."

"I’m not," replied the man, biting his lip so hard that he bit clean through it. "I am Captain Boudreaux from the 91st infantry."

Wrath looked around at the now silent men on the ground. There had to have been more than a hundred of them, all told—much more than the smaller survivor groups that they had been picking off as their paths crossed.

"You thought you would win simply because you had the numbers, didn’t you?" mused Wrath, slowly turning his attention back to Boudreaux.

"Please," whispered the captain, his gun shaking with his hands as he continued to point it at Greed.

"Please, what?" asked Envy, cocking his head to the side. "Please let you live, or please let you die? If you are going to ask us for something, it is important to be precise. The Devil is in the details, after all."

"Please," stammered the captain as he looked around the road at his fallen men. "I don’t want to die."

"That’s cute," smiled Greed as a hole blossomed in the center of the captain’s head. Lowering his weapon, Greed let out a disappointed tsk. "But I seem to have remembered giving you that option before, and you chose not to take it."

Letting out a long sigh, Greed started forward again.

"Well," yawned Sloth from where he was leaning against one of the burnt-out cars. "That was about as exciting as a church sermon."

Envy scoffed at that statement. "Since when have you been to church?"

"Not me, but the meat sack," yawned Sloth again as he pushed away and started walking forward.

Wrath kicked the body of Captain Boudreaux before stepping over his corpse. "Hopefully, next time, they bring something worth killing for. A fight is only fun when the sides are even. A child could take them out."

"They’re dead," replied Greed, his face completely blank. "They aren’t going to be bringing anything."

The five demons became silent again as they walked over body after body. The street was starting to smell like death, and as the blood started flowing freely, a few of the dumb zombies poked their heads out from where they were hiding.

"Meat’s still warm," called out Envy without turning his head. "Get it while you can."

As if his words were all the permission they needed, the zombies descended on the dead bodies, gorging themselves on the fresh meat. However, even as they ate, they kept an eye out on the demons, making sure that they weren’t going to come back to fight them for it.

Greed and the others had made it just outside of the city limits when the pulse came again. Harder this time, and not nearly as curious. Instead of feeling like a brush, the sensation that hit the five demons was nothing short of terror.

"Fucking hell," gasped Wrath as he gripped his chest.

"We need to get there now," snarled Sloth as he picked up the pace until he was running as fast as his human body could handle.

"Why is she so scared?" murmured Greed as he matched Sloth’s pace. It would have been so much easier if they could have just transported to where they needed to go, but the meat sacks wouldn’t be able to handle it. Just entering the demon realm for a split second would be enough to have their flesh melting from their bones.

All thoughts of the captain and his hundred men who thought to prove the Sins weren’t gods disappeared as all the demons could think about was getting to Hattie as fast as humanly possible.

Fucking humans.

Pride lifted his head as Gluttony entered the kitchen. There was a feast laid out in front of them, thanks to the house deciding to take care of them, and yet only the two Sins and the Angel of Death sat at the table.

"She’s sleeping," sighed Gluttony as he rubbed his forehead. "Tank looks worried, but Hattie isn’t saying anything."

"Her Père is dead," replied Pride as he looked down at the plate in front of him. As soon as the house heard that Hattie wasn’t going to be there, the feast simply disappeared, and in its place was only a single plate.

"Huh," murmured the reaper as he opened the cloche to see the head of a mutated zombie on his plate. "It seems the house knows exactly what we need."

Taking the knife and fork beside the plate, Chang Xuefeng started carving the meat.

"That’s what you eat?" asked Pride, cocking his head to the side. Technically, neither he nor Gluttony needed human food to survive. And since they were full after dealing with the humans, anything else would give them indigestion.

Chang Xuefeng lowered his knife and fork as he narrowed his eyes. "I am a Reaver," he said after a moment. "I can eat anything. Humans, zombies, human food, it is all the same to me. But the zombies will give me the most power."

"You are the Grim Reaper; how the fuck did you become a Reaver?" asked Gluttony, as he watched in fascination as Chang Xuefeng continued to eat.

"I suppose you won’t believe me if I said that I simply woke up in this body?" sighed Chang Xuefeng, not bothering to look at the Sins. He remembered making a wish that night... he wanted to either not be alone anymore, and if that wasn’t possible, he wanted to be dead.

But instead of either one happening, he ended up in Camp Hell, as something called a Reaver...

Then again, it might have taken a while, but his wish seemed to have come true since that was how he met Hattie. Looking around the table, he couldn’t help but smile.

And he was no longer alone.
