Chapter 219: You Ain’t Gods

The sun was setting, throwing shadows all over the road leading straight to where Hattie was. Deserted buildings lined the road on both sides as abandoned cars were left where they stopped working.

The five Sins weaved around them like they were nothing as they focused, single-mindedly, on the feeling inside their chests. This wasn’t the first time they had been in the middle of one of the bigger towns surrounding City O, but for the most part, they never bothered with them.

The first thing that most people did when the apocalypse hit was to abandon their homes and businesses, trying to find a ’safer place to be’. The joke was on them since there was no safe place left in the world.

The sound of Désiré hitting one of the hanging street signs startled Luca from his thoughts as it echoed against the buildings.

"Was that really necessary?" sneered Wrath as he looked over his shoulder.

"Necessary?" mused Lust, cocking his head to the side. "No. But I figured I might as well make things more fun. After all, we are all playing a game right now, aren’t we? There is no harm in ringing the dinner bell that we were all ignoring."

"Shut up," stated Greed calmly as he took in a breath. "This is a pointless waste of time, time that we could be spending with Hattie."

"Potato, Potatoe," shrugged Lust, not at all concerned. "We all know that only one of us is getting the girl, and considering who I am, none of you are a contender. Might as well enjoy this whole brotherly bonding thing while we can."

Closing his eyes, Greed tilted his head a fraction to the side as the cracking sound of a bullet being shot could be heard. The heat from the bullet as it passed his cheek didn’t bother him a bit, and the projectile itself ended up buried in the skeleton of a car in front of him.

"She hates you," continued Greed as if someone wasn’t trying to kill the five Sins. "You might know how to fuck, but that means jack shit when it comes to Hattie. Besides... our meat sacks don’t mind sharing. Are you saying that you are even more closed-minded than a human? That doesn’t bode well for you."

The second time someone fired at Greed, Sloth had had enough. Raising his rifle, he ’randomly’ shot at one of the broken windows in the building beside them. There was a brief moment where even the wind stopped blowing before a human plunged out of the tenth floor, falling headfirst to the ground.

He was lucky that he was already dead before it happened; otherwise, he might have been severely hurt... given the fact that his head cracked open like an egg and his brain matter was splattered all over the place.

Sloth was just happy he wasn’t the one who had to clean it up.

"Greed?" sighed Envy as he looked over his shoulder. "Your orders?"

Greed shifted his head to the other side as he, once again, avoided the bullet meant for him. "We can’t bring them with us," he stated, his face completely blank as he looked up at all the broken windows in the buildings around them.

In terms of an ambush, it was a good place to pick. If they were human, whoever had planned this would have been more likely to succeed. But, as it stood, it was nothing more than a pain in Greed’s ass.

Seriously. Couldn’t the humans be smart enough to just hide in the shadows as they passed? Even animals were smart enough to know when a stronger predator was around and not get involved.

"Maybe they are just bored?" suggested Wrath as he threw one of his knives. Just like with Sloth, a body flipped out of a broken window and splattered on the ground right by Wrath’s feet. "It’s not like we’ve seen any zombies in a while. It could make them bored enough to try to kill something else. I mean, I get bored, too."

"You feed on violence," sneered Envy as he took a shot. "That is not the same. You can’t go ten minutes without either inciting a fight or ending one. Humans don’t have the same need."

"Don’t be so sure," replied Wrath as he kicked the body in front of him. A bright red seed could be seen before it quickly died away. "Humans are becoming more and more interesting."

"Can they even be human if they are infected by a demon seed?" mused Lust as he couched down in front of a body. The fact that a bullet hit the pavement right in front of him didn’t bother him at all. He was much more interested in the tiny seed he could see protected inside the chest of the man.

Well, it would have been protected if the heart was still beating.

"A new type of demon? It’s not like we actually spawn that way," mused Greed. "In fact, I don’t remember the last time there had been any new demons in Hell."

"Ah, Earth," purred Envy as he looked at the human coming toward them. He was flanked by a bunch of humans on either side, and everyone had a gun up and pointed. "If the humans can’t appreciate it, then the demon spawns can."

"I know who you are," called out the leader. "And I’m not going to let you terrorize anyone anymore."

Envy and Lust scoffed at his grant proclamation. It wasn’t the first time they had heard something similar. But saying something like that needed to be backed up by power... and the men in front of them desperately lacked enough power.

"Listen," sighed Greed as he stepped forward, flanked by Wrath and Sloth. "We just want to go home. That’s it. Turn around and leave; it’s the only way to ensure you see the sunrise tomorrow."

"Awe, are the great and mighty Sins scared of us?" sneered one of the men with the M4 carbine pointed at Wrath’s head.

"The only thing we are scared of is your stupidity being contagious," sighed Greed as he rubbed his forehead.

"We knows you ain’t gods," announced the leader. "And tonight, we’s gonna prove it."
