Chapter 217: Almost Home

"You know," sighed Désiré as he and Luca watched the scene in front of them. "I never thought I would see the day when an orgy was just... blah," he sighed a second time. "Where is the passion? The enjoyment? It’s like these people aren’t even trying anymore."

With a wave of his hand, he let forth a toxic cloud to envelope the twenty or so men in front of them, giving them a much quicker death than the one he had originally planned. Really, there had to be something wrong with both him and Lust that he weren’t even just a little interested.

"I’d be happy if I never had to watch that again," replied Luca with a snort as he turned his attention to Dimitri. Wrath was in full control as he ripped spines out through stomachs and then used them to beat others to death.

The maniacal glee written on his face made Luca shake his head. Seriously, it was a good thing that this was an apocalypse because that type of behavior really wasn’t suitable for the old world. At least now, he could skin people alive without getting any weird looks.

Ronan, on the other hand, was almost merciful in the way he took out his enemies. First, Sloth put them into a sleep so good everyone had a peaceful smile on their faces before he surrounded them in a mist so black that when it disappeared, not even their skeletons were left behind.

For a man who did the majority of his killing in the form of one target at a time, this mass killing was definitely a step up for him.

Even Salvatore seemed to be having fun by using his gift of manipulation to make the people jump into a small body of water beside the road. Within seconds, the gators opened their mouths to eat the offering, smiling the entire time.

Everything was so simple and easy that, not for the first time, Luca wondered if there was really any point to this.

It always started out in one of two ways. Either they met a group on the road, or they walked past a compound. From there, introductions were made, and the options were given: either be a servant of the Sins or die.

What shocked Luca the most was that pretty much everyone chose the second option. That led to the killing of every human they had come across, which led to... boredom.

For once, they either wanted a better fight or for the humans to realize that they didn’t stand a chance and chose life for once.

But no... that was too easy.

In fact, only Dimitri and Wrath seemed to be enjoying themselves at this point.

"Are we done yet?" yawned Ronan as he closed his eyes. Ever since Sloth had taken up residence in his body, Ronan started to sleep while still standing. In fact, he could fall asleep in mid-sentence. But that even wasn’t the most annoying part.

Oh no, as the Sin of Sloth, every time he fell asleep, even if it was only for a few minutes, was enough to completely recharge his energy.

In contrast, the more Dimitri fought, the stronger he became.

"Ask Dimitri," replied Luca, tipping his head up so that his chin was pointing to where Dimitri was strangling a man in one hand and beating another with his own arms.

"Give me a few," called out Dimitri. "Almost done."

"I say we just make him do all the fighting from now on," yawned Ronan as he cracked one eye open. "I want to see Ma Cher as fast as possible, and he is taking forever!"

Suddenly, a dark feeling passed over the men.

Straightening up, Luca looked around, trying to figure out where the source was coming from. It didn’t feel dangerous... in fact, it felt more like a lover’s caress. "What?" asked Désiré as he looked around. "Where?"

The dark feeling almost seemed to have turned around and come back to them as if finding what it was looking for. The air became thick like one of Désiré’s clouds of toxins; only this fog didn’t want to hurt them.

Instead, it was like it was tasting them, seeing if they were worthy or not of whatever was going to come next.

Taking in a deep breath, Luca smelled the electricity in the air as if a storm was coming.

They must have passed whatever test it was because as fast as it came, the dark feeling left them. Feeling alone and unstable, Luca turned in the direction where it had come from. The second he did, he felt a pull in his chest like his heart was demanding that he go in that direction now.

The pull was so strong that he actually took a few steps before he realized that everyone else was rooted to the ground.

Dimitri was frozen in mid-kill for a second before his fingers shifted slightly, and the heads of the two men he was fighting rolled to the ground. "Someone wanna be tellin’ me what de fuck be goin’ on?" he demanded, his eyes immediately going to Luca as if he would have all the answers.

Salvatore turned his back on the water and the gators waiting for more food, and he narrowed his eyes. "She’s calling," he murmured. With a wave of his hand, the rest of the humans under his control jumped as one into the still water and the waiting alligators.

Stretching his hands above his head, Ronan couldn’t hold back his smile. "’Bout time," he purred. "Our woman be callin’ us home."

Désiré simply grunted, his eyes locked on a target in the distance that only he seemed to be able to see. "Then let’s not keep her waiting."

Leaving the massacre behind for the gators to take care of, the Sins sprinted toward the feeling of home. It had been too long since they last saw Hattie, and now the time had come. They were so close, only a few hours, and they would be home...
