Be Careful What You Wish For: A Zombie Apocalypse
Chapter 197: A Lie Or The Truth?

Chapter 197: A Lie Or The Truth?

The soft click of the door opening was enough to wake me up, but it wasn’t like I was dead asleep either... Ha!

"Morning, Mommy," I yawned as I sat up in bed. Stretching out all the creeks and cracks in my back, I turned over to see my companion. "Morning to you, too," I shrugged. The maggots crawling around the empty eye socks were enough to make me pass over my rice craving, but otherwise, I almost felt bad for the creature.

It was clear that he was young, maybe no more than 18, when he died the first time around. However, it was clear that no matter how much Mommy Dearest was taking care of him, he was still decomposing faster than she would have liked.

Then again, he was a walking dead body who wasn’t walking. Exercise was very important, even for the dead. It was nothing that got the tummy grumbling louder than stumbling after prey. The poor kid was missing out on the best part of the afterlife.

"How are you alive?" sputtered the woman, not bothering with whatever mindfuck she was originally working with. Now, it was clear to see just how rundown the house was, including a giant hole in the floor right by my side of the bed.

I’m surprised that I didn’t fall in it last night.

"I’m special," I shrugged, swinging my legs out of bed. Finding the hand that had fallen off last night, I gently tossed it over to the zombie. "What’s for breakfast?"

"It was supposed to be you," replied the demon, a look of confusion on her face. "Why aren’t you dead?"

"I told you, I’m special. And I really didn’t know that there were female demons, too. Look at us, both learning something new today." Making my way to the door, I waited for the demon to move so I could get by her.

"My son needs food," she sneered at me. "And you are that food. So get on that fucking bed and get eaten."

"No can do," I replied, the bright smile still on my face. "You see, Daddy will get cranky if anything happens to me, and I don’t think that you want Daddy cranky. Although seeing Daddy Reaper might be hot.... Do you think if I’m eaten, he could find me faster? It would be fun to see if he can kill you as easily as he kills everyone else."

"You are crazy, you know that, right?" sputtered the demon as she back up a bit as I got in her face.

"It’s the fucking zombie apocalypse... if we aren’t all madder than a hatter, is there really any point to living?" I asked, cocking my head to the side. When the demon looked at me like she didn’t know how to respond, I sighed. "Sanity won’t save you; it just makes you easier to kill."

"You can see me, can’t you?" asked the demon as I started down the stairs. Unlike last night, these ones were missing planks here and there, and the handrail was completely gone.

"You get a gold star," I chuckled as I jumped over the last step that was completely missing. Landing on the floor, I wrinkled my nose at the sight of the furniture in the living room. There was no way in Hell I was sitting on any of those.

Snapping my fingers... cause everyone needs a bit of flair in the morning... I took out a wingback chair and a side table. Walking over to my seat, neither the demon nor I bothered to speak.

"Well?" I asked, pulling out a granola bar. I hated the taste of these things, but it was much better than to tell Daddy that I had only eaten candy while I was away. And I already knew that that was going to be his first question.

Silly Daddy.

"Well?" sighed the demon, crawling up on the couch. It was the first time I saw past her sagging boobs to her round stomach and twig-like legs. It made sense that she was an envy demon; she probably envied everyone who looked better than her. It also explained the perfect look and the perfect home. This was her dream life.

The only thing I didn’t know was if she was a demon before or if she was human with a seed in her heart.

Well, I had heard that there was no such thing as a dumb question... let’s test that theory. "Were you always a demon, or is this a new development?"

The demon closed her eyes and slouched even lower on the couch. "Relatively new," she sighed at last. "And I have no idea how it happened. I went to sleep last night outside on the porch, and this morning, I woke up like this..."

"That sucks," I sighed, pulling out two cups of my own sweet tea. This one won’t make me fall asleep but damn it if she didn’t start a new craving. Leaning over, I handed her the glass and sipped my own. "Have some tea, and then we can talk."

The two of us sat in silence as we both thought things through, and I have to admit, it was nice to just stop for a bit. It felt like I had been doing nothing but going full steam ahead since I was tortured in the Dragon’s Lair.

The soft clinking of the glass against the table brought me out of my thoughts. "This isn’t the life I had envisioned," sighed the demon as she sat up straighter. "I had a good life before the world went to shit. I mean, I didn’t think it at the time, but compared to now, it was a good life."

I hummed and nodded my head, still sipping on my sweet tea. "I think most people are seeing that now. But there is nothing like almost dying from a zombie to make you miss going to work and school."

The demon chuckled and I refilled her glass and put down some cookies on the table. Daddy would never have to know about this treat. Besides, I’m sharing them, so they don’t really count anyway.

"You said that you wished for me," I continued, picking up one of the cookies and biting into it. "Was that a lie or the truth?"
