Be Careful What You Wish For: A Zombie Apocalypse
Chapter 196: Smart Little Zombie

Chapter 196: Smart Little Zombie

I let the envy demon guide me ever so carefully into her house as the crinoline under her skirts swished back and forth around her legs. I was impressed that whatever illusion I was currently in thought to even add the sounds of small things...

Like the swishing of the skirts.

"Do you know where your mommy is?" asked the woman as she sat me down at the kitchen table. It was a small, four-person round table with a bright yellow tablecloth over the top and plastic yellow chairs.

It definitely wasn’t the most comfortable set that I have ever sat on, but the linoleum floor was a familiar friend. I wonder if you can get the smell of blood and rotting flesh out of it better or if the demon just really wasn’t that good of a housewife.

Really, I might just put it on the demon not cleaning up after herself. I managed to keep Père’s floors clean and smell free just fine.

"Mommy is dead," I sighed, letting my shoulders drop just a bit. I was pretty sure that bitch was still alive and well at the Legislation Compound, but there was always wishful thinking. Besides, if she ever stuck her head out of the ground again, I didn’t mind chopping it off.

"Oh, you poor, sweet soul," purred the demon as she placed a cup of sweet tea on the table in front of me. I stared at the glass and the moisture dripping down the side of it. It was amazing how such a small thing made me think of Elizabeth.

Frig, I missed her.

"It’s okay," I replied, picking up the glass and taking a sip. It was nowhere near as good as Elizabeth’s, but it wasn’t about to kill me.

Yet.

"You said that you were wishing for me?" I pressed as I put the glass down on the table and looked at the creature. Once again, the world around me flickered, and I could see the beaten countertops with human arms and legs strewn all over them.

Blood dripped down on the tiles under the limbs as the demon walked over to the sink and threw a head out of it before she started to wash the dishes. Absently, I looked down to see the oversized, beachball head of the mutated zombie staring back at me.

Its mouth was moving, opening and closing like a fish out of water as it gasped for air, its eyes almost begging me to put it out of its misery.

But that was weird. I thought those zombies could make clones of themselves and regrow body parts. Why wasn’t it able to simply regenerate?

"Oh my," chuckled the woman as she picked up the head and threw it up a few times in the air. "This poor kitten keeps getting into the strangest of spaces."

At her words, the room around me shifted back, and I could see her lifting a long-haired, white cat over her head before placing it back on the counter. The now empty counter with pristine pink counters.

This place really was a head trip but fun at the same time. I was practically holding my breath as I tried to figure out what she was going to do next.

"Do you like kittens, Sugarplum?" asked the demon, her voice almost hypnotic. "Go on, drink some more tea. Nothing good in the world happens before a cup of sweet tea."

Nodding my head, I quickly finished the drink, eager for whatever was to come next.

When my eyelids started to feel heavy, and I couldn’t help but yawn, the flickering woman gently took my arm as she led me, stumbling, up the stairs and into a room.

"You see," she started as she entered the still-dark room. The curtains were closed, and none of the lights were on, but I didn’t need them to know that there was something in the bed. "A few months ago, my son fell sick," sighed the demon as she pulled back the bedsheets and gently guided me into the bed.

"Well, what’s a mother to do but cater to her only son? The only problem is that he has been getting a lot pickier about what he wants to eat lately... and there are only so many ground beef recipes in the world." The way she was talking, you would think that she was the perfect wife and mother, doing everything in her power to make sure that her family was always first.

"But I digress. You sleep here for the night. In the morning, I’ll find some clothes for you and get you even more settled in."

Spinning around, the woman left the room, closing the door gently behind her. My limbs were feeling too heavy, thanks to whatever she had put in the sweet tea, and I quickly fell asleep.

----

I was still half out of it when I felt the arm starting to wrap around my waist and someone beginning to breathe in my ear.

Now, I didn’t mind sharing my bed. I had enough guys on my Pokedex to know that I was never going to have to spend a night by myself any time soon, but I drew the line of breathing on me—especially when their breath smelled like a rotting corpse.

Seriously, there was only so much a woman could take.

"Nope," I grumbled, removing the hand from my curves. "No touchy until you have either fed or carried me at least one time."

I figured that would be a good starting rule, and one this zombie clearly couldn’t fulfill.

The hand dropped off onto my side of the bed, but the arm retracted to his side, so I was at least willing to work with him. It really wasn’t his fault that his body kept falling apart.

I blamed his mother.

There was a soft grunt from his side of the bed before he stopped moving. Smart little zombie. It was an important lesson in survival to know who the biggest dog in the room was.

And, in this case, that would be me.
