Chapter 198: Deal Accepted
"It was the truth," replied the demon. "I had run out of food for Andrew two days ago, and he prefers to have a fresher corpse than the left overs. No matter how I heat them up or what sauces I add to it, he just refuses to eat."
The look on the demon’s face made me want to laugh. She looked exactly like a frustrated mother who was trying to get her infant to eat real food. Even the wrinkles on her face couldn’t take away from the fact that she was worried.
"And what was your wish?" I asked; the sweet tea in my hand was no longer as cold as I liked it to be, so I added some more ice to the glass.
"I wished for a way for me and Andrew to survive," sighed the demon. "I thought that you would be perfect because then Andrew could hear your heart and have warm blood instead of..."
"Leftovers?" I suggested, not even wanting to look in the kitchen. I had a pretty good idea of what it was going to look like, and I didn’t want it to mess with my appetite.
"Exactly! But instead of expecting to change the sheets, Andrew was sleeping quietly beside you for the first time in months. Can’t I just keep you? Maybe you can get him to eat... I’ll even consider you my daughter-in-law! I would treat you good!"
Shaking my head, I smiled at her. "Sorry, I wasn’t kidding about Daddy. I might have been brought here because of your wish, but if I am gone too long, he will tear apart the world trying to find me. Then there are the Sins, but I am still on the fence about them."
"The Sins?" hissed the demon like I just told her that the boogeyman was waiting for her upstairs. Then again, it was clear that she was a demon now, so maybe she really was terrified of them. "Like the Seven Deadly Sins?"
"Yup," I nodded. "Which is why I can’t stay all that long. But how about this... make a wish, and if your sacrifice is good enough, I’ll make it come true."
"What are you? A genie?" snapped the demon, but I could see the hope in her eyes as she looked at me.
"Nope," I replied. "Just your run of the mill Devil."
"You died. I heard about it... you died! A... greed demon killed you..."
"Ripped out Luci’s heart and ate it," I agreed, all the humor gone from my face. "But Luci was simply a shell. Do you really think that a bunch of demons could overpower their creator and kill her?"
"You are..." started the demon, only to stop quickly. "I’m sorry, my Queen," she continued, dropping her head down low in a half bow. "That was insolent."
"I like to think of myself as an upgraded version of what I was. All the power... less accommodating."
"I don’t understand," murmured the demon, no longer looking at me. She continued to sip at her drink as if not finishing it meant that she would die.
"Luci was a sweet, kind creator who only wanted to be loved," I explained, ignoring the demon when she spat the sweet tea across the room. When she looked down at her body, I knew the comment she was making in her head.
"I asked her about your looks," I said, answering the unspoken question in her head. "Gluttony was put off by it, too."
"But Gluttony is..." Her eyes went wide as she thought about the Sin.
"Oh, I know," I nodded. "And I completely agree. But I still asked her. She said that everyone else in the realms was beautiful but hit the ugly deep inside. So, she created a new type of being that couldn’t need to hide behind beauty but be proud of who they were."
"That makes no sense. I’ve seen the Devil, and she is stunning," sneered the demon, clearly forgetting who she was having tea with.
"She is... and she was kicked out by her creator on the word of another and sent to a place where she was alone. She created you all so that she would have company, and yet... even with so many demons, she was still alone."
"I see. And you aren’t going to be like that?" murmured the demon, looking up at me from under her lashes.
"Nah, that’s no fun at all," I replied with a chuckle. "Since you all seem to think that your creator is an evil, vindictive creator, then I am going to play that part. Let’s call it a self-fulfilling prophecy. You want cruel? I can be that. I can bath in the blood of everyone and still smile as I fall asleep at night. You had the angel; now you all get to experience the devil."
"And my wish?" asked the demon, cocking her head to the side as we both heard the thump of someone falling out of bed upstairs. "Can you make my wish come true?"
"What will you give me in exchange?" I asked, my eyes zeroed in on the demon. I didn’t need the powers that granting wishes gave to me since the guys could get their own source of power now that they were on Earth, but I still needed something in exchange.
"My wish is that my son is happy and healthy," sighed the demon. "I don’t care if I have to look like this for the rest of my life, but I want my son to have the best life possible."
There was a long silence, but I didn’t push her. I still had some time before I needed to find Daddy. And Tank... I couldn’t forget about Tank.
"And in exchange, I pledge my eternal devotion as your servant."
"I don’t really need one of those," I replied, waving that away. "And after watching Luci’s death, I don’t trust any of you. How about this... in exchange for a good life for your son, you cannot change your appearance at all. No more glamor, or illusion, or whatever you call it. I think that as an envy demon, that might be the biggest punishment for you."
"So, you’ll do it?"
"Deal accepted."
