Chapter 190: Mine, Too
Chapter 190: Mine, Too
It took everything inside me not to make a comment on the fact that the pot was calling the kettle black. I mean, she blamed every wrong decision on someone else, so why was she so disgusted when someone else did the exact same thing?
"We’ve been walking all night long," said Dante, his face expressionless as he looked back and forth between Adam and Eve. "We are going to go to bed." There was a long pause as Beau opened the door for the rest of us. "Thank you for letting us stay here, but we won’t need anything more from you."
And just like that, Pride managed to dismiss the most important couple in the history of the world.
I would fully admit that Pride got a crap ton of brownie points for that.
The door closed with a bang behind him, and the four of us stood in the dark room. This time, I didn’t even bother snapping my fingers before the lights turned on, and we finally saw our room. It had been a conference room before the end of the world, a long table with four phones hooked up in the middle of it with at least 20 chairs if not more.
There were blackout curtains blocking the light from the outside world, but other than that, it was pretty sparse. Wrinkling my nose because while this room was giant, it wasn’t a good bedroom, I switched out the table and chairs for my comfy bed, an oversized chair that I had no idea where it had come from and a smaller table filled with snacks and drinks.
"I’ll take the first watch," grunted Tank as he sank down into the big chair. Cracking his neck back and forth, he made himself comfortable as he stared down the door like it was a monster about to attack us.
"This might help," I sighed, pulling out more than a few guns and a new table. Putting everything beside him, I also added a coffee and a muffin.
Before Tank could reply, the handle on the door turned down, and a gun was in his hands faster than I could take my next breath. However, the door didn’t budge at all.
"Who is it?" I called out, still cradled in Chang Xuefeng’s arms.
"It’s Eve," called out the sunshine woman from the other side. Letting out a long sigh, Beau walked toward the door, opening it in such a way that Tank had the perfect line of sight.
"Uh," she said, cocking her head to the side as she looked at Tank and his gun. "We don’t allow any weapons in here. I’ll have to confiscate all of them."
When Tank didn’t so much as waver, Eve let out a very long sigh. "Look, it is in the best interests of everyone. The last thing we need is a jumpy civilian who sees zombies where there are none. That is how people get killed."
"Does he really look like a jumpy civilian?" mused Dante, his head cocked toward Tank so no one mistook who he was talking about.
"No, he doesn’t," replied Adam, walking in right behind Eve. "And that is even more worrying. Why are you here?"
Dante raised an eyebrow and scoffed at Adam’s question. "Why are any of us here? This was the first building we came to when we wanted sleep for the night—or the day as it so happens to be."
"Adam," grunted Eve as she finally looked around the room. "One of them is a space user."
The calculating gleam in Adam’s eyes didn’t go unnoticed by any of us, and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. "Who’s the space user?" he grunted, looking directly at Beau.
"Oh, look," sighed Beau. "You caught me. Yup, I’m a space user. I couldn’t fool you."
"If it’s not you..." continued Adam as he looked directly at Chang Xuefeng. "It has to be you."
Chang Xuefeng didn’t bother to waste his breath on the accusations. Unlike most of the other powers, it was impossible to know who had a space and who didn’t unless they took things out when they were in a room all by themselves.
"We are looking for a space user," interrupted Eve as she shot Adam a dirty look. "We need to transport some things to one of the old navy bases near O City. We can pay."
Chang Xuefeng snorted at that statement while Dante and Beau went stiff. "What base?" they asked, almost in unison.
Eve looked between the men. "I can’t remember the name," she said. "But it is run by Alicia and René Lapierre."
Adam made a soft noise, and Eve quickly stopped talking.
"No," I stated, not even wanting to play that game. This place was fun. Anywhere where Alicia and René were wasn’t. It was as simple as that.
"We have supplies or cash, whichever one you want," started Eve before Adam once again cut her off. "Children shouldn’t speak when adults are around."
Ah, now I saw where Cain got his winning personality.
"We don’t do anything without her say so," shrugged Dante as Tank continued to have his gun pointed at the two unwelcome guests. "We love to spoil her."
"Look, Sweetie," sighed Eve, still trying hard to work around Adam’s attitude. "Why don’t you go outside and play with the other kids while I speak to your Daddies."
That comment alone made me laugh so hard that I almost fell out of Chang Xuefeng’s arms. Both Beau and Dante reached out to try and catch me, but Chang Xuefeng was faster. "Oh, Eve," I purred, taking a lollypop out of my space as I put it in my mouth. "Only one of them is my Daddy... the rest are..."
I cocked my head to the side as I looked around at the other men. How did I explain them to an outsider? Tank let out a low growl as he threw his gun at Dante before deftly plucking me out of Chang Xuefeng’s arms.
"Mine, too." I finished as Tank buried his head in my neck.
