Be Careful What You Wish For: A Zombie Apocalypse
Chapter 188: Well, Since I’m Here

Chapter 188: Well, Since I’m Here

I must have fallen asleep sometime after Chang Xuefeng picked me up and started carrying me because then next thing I knew, he was trying to wake me up.

"Wish girl?" he murmured softly as he rubbed my cheek. "You awake?"

I hummed as I let out a big yawn that almost cracked my jaw. "Where are we?"

"Some type of government building, it looks like," replied Tank as he slowly rubbed my back. With my head still on Chang Xuefeng’s shoulder, I looked over at the other man. "But we have been walking all night. Dawn is coming, and Dante thought that you might want to take a break, maybe get some breakfast."

Turning my head to the other side, I saw Pride shining through Dante’s eyes as he looked at me with concern. Noticing that I was finally looking at him, he held out a hand to me like he wanted me to take it.

The only problem was that the jury was still out on the fate of the Sins, and I wasn’t about to give them any more of myself, knowing what they did to me in the past. I was not big on second chances...

"Okay," I agreed. There was no harm in stopping for a while. Hopefully, by the time we get to the Dragon’s Lair, Bishop, and the others will have decided that life there was too hard without electricity and running water.

If they could just hurry up and evict themselves, that would save me so much trouble.

Beau stepped forward, leading the way, followed closely behind by Tank. Then Chang Xuefeng and I were in the middle, protected on either side by a Sin since Pride was bringing up the rear.

The building in front of us was a very typical office building. The lower lobby was made all of glass, letting us see the group of survivors huddled in different corners of the room as one woman flitted back and forth.

Beau put one of his easygoing smiles on his face as he reached up his hand and knocked gently on the glass. The woman on the other side startled a bit, dropping the blankets in her hands as she spun around to look at us.

There was a bright smile on her face when she realized that we were humans instead of zombies, and she rushed over to unlock the front door. "Come in quickly," she murmured, looking around behind us like she was expecting an ambush or something. "I’ll get you all settled."

We filed into the building, one after another, and for the first time, I studied the woman. She was stunning, with an olive complexion and brown eyes. She was taller than I was, not like that was hard, and had a slim figure.

Unlike me, she chose to wear camo pants and a long-sleeved tan shirt with brown boots. A gun hung from her hip while another one was strapped to her thigh. As if noticing my looks, she approached me and smiled.

"It’s okay," she assured me, talking to me like I was a scared child. "My name is Eve. I’m a soldier. I am here to protect you. There are more of me, so you can’t be scared if you see someone with a gun. All we want to do is help you."

Okay, I got that I was being carried like a kid, and with the way I was dressed and the fact that I was still waking up, it was a genuine mistake on her part. But that didn’t mean I wanted to waste my energy talking to her.

Besides, I was pretty sure that I hated everyone named Eve, Eva, or some form of Eve at the moment. Yup, Luci’s heart was very clearly pounding inside my chest as I continued to stare at the woman. Was this the original Eve? There was no way that was possible, right?!?

"I am sure that we are going to be great friends," she continued, not at all put off by the fact that I wasn’t speaking to her. "I can even introduce you to some more friends if you want. There are a few kids here to play with."

She held out her hands as if expecting me to willingly let her carry me. Turning my head, I buried my nose in Chang Xuefeng’s neck and drifted off back to sleep. There was nothing amusing here. We’d rest a bit before heading out to the Dragon’s Lair, but there was no point in making friends.

Enemies? There was always time to make more of those... but I was selective when it came to my friends.

"You’ll have to forgive her," smiled Beau as I felt him stroking my hair. "She is just waking up and doesn’t like mornings."

"Of course!" chuckled Eve as she led us deeper into the building and down a hallway. There were more children and family groups in here, and I almost appreciated the way she had arranged everyone.

Adults were kept in the front so that, in the case of an attack, they could buy the children time to hide. Genius really.

But that still didn’t make her my friend. She was much too bubbly for that.

"This is where we have all the families. Unfortunately, you can’t go into any of the rooms except for the washrooms. Each office is locked, and as much as it would make life easier to have everyone in their own rooms, we just can’t manage it."

Dante looked at Eve a bit confused. "I didn’t think that anyone still had power..."

"Yeah," sighed Eve as she continued down the hallway. "It would be a bit simpler without the electronic locks, but this place has a CDC lab in the basement. There are more generators, plus solar panels, than any one building really needs. But I guess it makes sense. We really don’t want all those random diseases to be released simply because the locks stopped working."

My head perked up the second the woman... Eve... said that this was a CDC building. While I wasn’t entirely sure what CDC stood for, I knew it had something to do with diseases cause Père was constantly going off on them when it came to their protective measures.

He let it slip once that there could be strands of weaponized diseases, whatever that meant, including a new strain of the bubonic plague.

Suddenly, I wasn’t so interested in leaving this place. Since I was here, I might as well have a bit of fun.
