The feeling of Hattie in his arms was everything Chang Xuefeng had wanted and more. Going through all the paperwork a second time, as well as that for Pride and Tank, gave him even more time, and he was grateful for it.

Of course, it did surprise him when she fell asleep with her head on his shoulder.

"She shouldn’t be that tired," sighed the man who had come with Hattie to the gate. "She just woke up from a nap."

The three other men turned their attention to him as the woman, Candy, led them toward the men’s quarantine dormitories. She was looking over her shoulder every few steps as if wanting to make sure that Hattie was safe.

"And just how did she end up with all those bruises?" demanded Pride, his voice becoming deep with the threat of violence.

"No idea," replied the stranger with a growl of his own. "She had them before I was brought in to heal her."

Candy, who was clearly listening to them, nodded her head. "Is there anything that you can do for her, Doctor Landry?" Ah, so clearly, the meat sack was known to the human female. It was clear that he was a demon of some kind, but Chang Xuefeng didn’t know just want type of demon.

"Short of removing her from her mother, there isn’t much," sighed the man, rubbing his forehead like he was stressed out. "The—" he stopped for a moment before ’forcing’ himself to keep going. "The amount of abuse that Ms. LaRue puts her through should be a crime."

Candy stopped so suddenly that if a bunch of supernatural creatures weren’t following her, she would have been run over by the men following her. "Her mother is abusing her?"

"Her mother sold her when she was four years old to a man who abused her mentally, physically, and sexually. While she might not have put her hands on Hattie before now, she is not innocent from the abuse Hattie has experienced in her life."

Tank’s words were point blank, but his eyes never left Hattie’s sleeping face, as if he was scared that the moment he turned around, she was going to disappear.

Chang Xuefeng could appreciate that sentiment. It was the same reason why he would be willing to reap everyone inside this compound who took her from him a second time.

Candy’s face went white as she looked at him and the sleeping girl. "I am so sorry," she whispered, obviously blaming herself for what Hattie was going through. "I should have done something..."

"What could you have done?" sighed Chang Xuefeng, willing to give the human an out. Candy had a good heart, which was more than he could say for the majority of humans left alive. There was no way that she wouldn’t believe a biological mother over a random stranger. "Maybe, next time, ask the kid."

"She also isn’t 12, is she?" sighed Candy, once again looking around at the four men.

"No," chuckled Tank. "But it was... kind of you to try and look out for her."

"If there is anything that you need, please let me know," replied Candy as they entered the male dorms.

"Is there a room big enough for all of us?" asked Pride, his head cocked to the side as he studied the building. "I don’t want to leave her alone, and she isn’t going to be happy if she wakes up and we aren’t around."

"Doctor?" asked Candy, looking at Beau for an answer.

"It’s better if you can keep them together," agreed Dr. Landry with a decisive nod. "Her mother is unconscious at the moment, but that doesn’t guarantee that she won’t wake up and attack her again."

"Okay," agreed Candy as she handed the clipboard to one of the six male guards coming to a stop in front of them.

"I’ll hold her while the other three are inspected," continued Beau with a bit to his voice as he held his arms out for Hattie. "I’ll give her back when you are done."

Chang Xuefeng and Tank both let out a threatening growl that caused the six male guards to step back into a defensive position with their hands on their guns. "Come with us now," demanded one of them, his eyes narrowing. "And we don’t allow females in this building. It is just asking for trouble, and I am not willing to take the chance."

This time, the growl was repeated from all four of the male’s chests as they stared down the guard. "No one is touching her," snarled Tank as he stepped in front of Chang Xuefeng, who still had his arms full of a sleeping woman. "If you want to live, then I suggest you become a bit smarter. Let’s go."

The guards looked like they were going to protest but decided against it when Chang Xuefeng handed Hattie over to the doctor. "Let’s get this shit over with."

Hattie chuckled when she found herself surrounded by flames again. However, the version of Luci in front of her was not the same one she was originally introduced to.

This Luci was wearing a beautiful black dress with only one arm covered by a long sleeve. The slit went dangerously high, and it showed off a myriad of tattoos that had been hidden by the sweater in her house.

"Nice look," smiled Hattie, not at all upset about being called back. In fact, she liked knowing that Luci was still alive and well.

"You, too," replied the Devil as she saw the sweater. "But I called you back for a reason."

"I figured, what can I do?"

"Not so much as what can you do, but what can you be prepared for," sighed Luci as she strolled past Hattie and away from her cottage.

"Cause that sounds so much worse," muttered Hattie before turning around and swiftly following. "What is going to happen?"

"Every wish has a kickback, whether you see it or not. Think of it like the butterfly effect on steroids. Marcus wished for all the mosquitos to go away and then have, but what is going to come next will be worse for the humans and your angel."

"What do I need to do to protect what is mine?" demanded Hattie, the smile going from her face as the fires in front of her cleared and she saw what was waiting for her. "Oh fuck me."
