Chapter 179: I’ll Be Holding You To That

Gluttony reared back at Hattie’ touch like it was burning him. Completely forgetting that he was in his original skin, his horns impaled themselves in the ceiling, keeping him in place when he would have retreated even further.

"You cannot seriously think that," he snarled, his eyes darting around everywhere but at the tiny creature in front of him that he couldn’t understand to save his life. He knew what he looked like; he had seen it in the mirror.

Everyone but the demons from Hell looked normal. Sure, the angels had their wings, but that was the only thing that set them apart from the humans that they watched over. In fact, when they hid their wings, they could easily pass as humans and, more often than not, did.

Demons, on the other hand, couldn’t do that. In order for them to blend in with everyone else, they had to take over a meat sack... and even then, only the strongest among them could do that.

There was no species more ugly than a demon, further proof of just how much their creator hated them.

But Hattie seemed to... find him attractive.

His muscles flinched and trembled under her inquisitive touch as he tried to get his horns out of the ceiling. It was completely embarrassing, and yet...

"I can’t seriously think what?" asked Hattie, her eyes never leaving his skin. "That you look like the sunset over the bayou? That you are attractive? That your size and appearance make me feel safe? Is that what I cannot think?"

Hattie scoffed before turning around and walking back into the small room that had her sent completely saturated in the bed. Without turning around, she snapped her fingers and suddenly was wearing a new dress, one that looked different from her other styles.

Instead of the Lolita look she loved with the short, full skirts and the bows, she wore a simple green sweater that hung off one shoulder. It fell just past her ass, not leaving much to the imagination, and her white thigh-high socks and Mary Jane shoes seemed to complete a look he didn’t understand.

It was the beginning of summer in Region L, and that meant that it was hotter than the ninth circle of Hell. There was no way she would be comfortable in such an outfit.

"Are you sure you won’t be too hot in that?" he asked, moving his head from side to side to create holes big enough to get his horns out. "Maybe you want to wear something else?"

"You really are a glutton for punishment, aren’t you?" Hattie chuckled without any humor in her voice. "Besides, the heat didn’t bother me anyway."

"I don’t know what I did to upset you, but whatever it is, I’m sorry," pressed Gluttony, dropping to his knees. The sudden movement pulled his horns out of the drywall, and plaster fell around him.

Hattie’s laughter didn’t hold the same tone as it had before, and the more the Sin thought about it, the more stressed he became. When he first appeared in Beau’s body, she was happy to see him and couldn’t stop touching him.

Now it was like she was giving him the cold shoulder.

He knew he shouldn’t have shown her his true form. Fuck!

Shifting his weight, he forced his body to retreat back into Beau, hiding his true nature from a human who could never understand what it was like to be so disgusting.

"You are brave," sneered Hattie as she looked at him over her shoulder. "Did I tell you that you could shift back?"

"I—" started Gluttony, not sure how he should reply.

"And your way of apologizing is shit. If you are going to say that you don’t know why you are sorry, but you just are... then don’t say anything at all," continued Hattie, putting her hair up into pigtails.

With another snap of her fingers, a long mirror appeared in front of her, letting her see her reflection.

Still in the human body, Gluttony walked forward like a lamb sacrificing himself to the lion, praying that it would be enough to satisfy it. "I am sorry," he said, slowly holding onto her shoulders.

She was so much smaller than him, even while he was human. There was at least a foot difference between them, and her head seemed to be resting on his heart as she leaned back into his embrace.

"Sorry doesn’t mean shit," she said. "If forgiveness worked, then was is the point of Hell?"

"What do I need to do?" While Gluttony might not know exactly what he had done wrong, this close to the woman who held his heart was enough to feel hers. Her face might look impassive like there was nothing wrong or that she was just being a bitch, but he could feel her crying deep under all the layers she surrounded herself with.

And whether she was crying on the inside or the outside, he needed to fix it.

"I almost think that is the worst part about all this," she sighed, closing her eyes as she let herself relax even more. "I don’t know what you need to do; I just know that you need to do something."

Gluttony hummed in agreement, storing her words away in the back of his head. "Okay," he agreed. "Then that is what I will do." He might not know what had set her off, or just why she was so hurt and angry every time she looked at him, but they had eternity to figure it out.

And now that he was finally beside her, he wasn’t letting her go for anything in the Realms. She was his, and that was enough.

"What do you want to do?" he continued, slipping his hands from her shoulders to her arms and rubbing them up and down.

"Since the world is my oyster, I want to go out and see more of it," she announced. "After I’ve taken care of a few things here."

"I am your weapon," Gluttony assured her. "I might not be as good at fighting as Wrath, but I can promise you that I will have your enemies on your knees before you, no matter what."

Hattie hummed before stepping out of his arms. "I’ll be holding you to that."
