Chapter 177: For What It’s Worth

The woman looked at me, studying my face as if there was an answer on it to a question that she didn’t ask.

"I was the first one created," she said at last. "Before everyone and everything else, there was him and me. And I was happy. But then he decided that I wasn’t enough. He wanted more, and I was pushed to the side in favor of two others. I will fully admit that I was jealous of them, but I didn’t wish them ill. I simply wanted to not be alone."

The look she gave me was enough to break my heart, and I was pretty sure that I didn’t have one to break. The loneliness in her eyes told me more than I needed to know.

This perfect woman, one that was so sweet and innocent that even I wanted to protect to my dying day, had no one. Everyone in her life left her... in this prison surrounded by fields and fire.

"I offered the woman an apple. That was it. It had always been my favorite fruit, and I wanted to share that with the others. Maybe that way... anyway. Shit happened, and I was put here. There was no one else... and I was so lonely."

I couldn’t help but nod my head in understanding. It sucked to be alone... no one to talk to, no noise or anything... just silence... it would have been its own form of torture.

"But before I was cast aside, I had been watching, hoping to please him. I saw how he created everything... and I figured... why not? If I had to be down here, then I would create my own world... my own people. People who would love me the way I wanted and needed to be loved."

Okay, it was official. I was going to rip all the guys apart for not realizing just what they could have had. Just how blind was Wrath to see her and reject her?!? The demon was bat-shit crazy!

"So, I made them... all seven. But I didn’t have a breath of life to breathe into them, so I took my own and divided it up into eight. One for each of us. The idea was that even if they weren’t nearby, they would at least have a part of me with them at all times."

The woman looked up at me and I nodded in encouragement. Yeah, if I could create my own people, that would be exactly what I would have done.

"But as of 18 years ago, the section in me disappeared. Now, if I leave this circle, I will disappear, never to be seen again."

"But you would be alive," I said, not sure if I was asking a question or making a statement. "Even if you weren’t seen, you would still be alive... right?"

She just smiled at me and shook her head. "With Wrath on Earth, the Sins were incomplete, and Hell couldn’t be left alone. It’s fine. You are here now, and they are completely obsessed with you in a way that I could only dream about."

"Your name," I demanded, all emotion gone from my voice. "Tell me your name."

"When I was created, my maker called me Lucinda," she smiled at me. "Hagatha Lucinda to be exact. But Eve called me Luci... and the world calls me—"

"Lucifer," I grunted, cutting her off. "You are Lucifer, Satan, the Devil."

Giving me a half smile, she held out her hands and shrugged her shoulders. "I know, I’m not what you were expecting."

"So, you are saying that I have a part of the Devil inside of me? Huh, I guess Mother was right."

"It’s more than just a part. When you signed the contract, you became Luci. All my powers, everything that I am, is now in you... and has been since you were born with one-eighths of a soul."

"Then the wishes?" I demanded, not sure where that fit into everything. If I really were Luci—the Devil, then wouldn’t I be able to do a lot more than just grant wishes?

"The Sins put it in your head because they don’t understand anything. They told you that you needed to get power through wishing to bring them to you... all you had to do was wish for it, and it would have happened."

"Well," I grumbled, collapsing in my chair. "That is... a bitch."

Luci shrugged her shoulders again before picking up her cup of coffee. "I hate being cold," she sighed, closing her eyes.

"You are in Hell, and you are cold?" I chuckled, taking out two lollypops and opening them up. Giving one to Luci, I started sucking on the other one.

"I’m empty," she reminded me. "Souls keep you warm. Without one..." Wrinkling her nose, she pulled a thick blanket out of nowhere and placed it on her lap. "Any other questions? Gluttony isn’t going to be happy if you keep sleeping, no matter how much he thinks you need sleep. Better ask now because I don’t know if I’ll be here after you leave."

I thought about what she said, and I felt a pang of sympathy in my chest for this part of me.

"What should I know?" I asked when nothing popped up in my head.

"The world is your oyster?" she suggested. "But seriously, the Sins can collect their own powers now that they are around humans again, so they won’t need you for that. They have also been trapped down here for a while, and you have been trapped in that house. Maybe go out and discover the country? I really have no idea. I’ve never left this place."

I blinked at her statement. "They don’t need me now that they are on Earth?" I demanded, my eyes widening in fear. If they didn’t need me, then there was nothing keeping them beside me other than a fraction of a soul that they had disregarded since they were created.

Was this going to be my fate, too? Was that why I was called here to see what my future looked like?

Oh, fuck that shit.

"Did you miss the point where they are so obsessed with you that I have an entire throne room dedicated to mirrors of just you?" chuckled Luci, taking another sip of her coffee. "I really don’t think that you have to worry about that."

"For what it’s worth, I’m sorry," I sighed just as the room became blurry.

"For what it’s worth, I’m sorry, too."
