Chapter 166: Let Me In
Looking over his shoulder, Chang Xuefeng scoffed at the shade. "So you say," he muttered, shaking out his wings. Truly, they were absolutely beautiful; the snow-white texture of the feathers seemed to be mesmerizing to anyone who stared at them for too long.
They were originally his pride and joy, but now...
Dropping his head, he hid his smirk from the shade. "Let’s go collect some souls, shall we?"
Right. Hattie granted wishes to get souls. Maybe if he just gave them to her instead of bringing them to purgatory, she wouldn’t have to work so hard.
Now, why didn’t he think about that before?
------
Désiré paced back and forth inside the small confines of the restaurant they were in. They had been stuck there for months along with all the other survivors as the rain continued to pour down, punishing human and zombie alike.
"I’m going fucking crazy here," he snarled, his eyes glancing outside as he felt a profound desire to just leave this place. There were too many humans in here, and not enough food.
People were starting to snap at each other, their cabin fever turning violent as they fought over everything. The baby was the first thing to die, but at least that stopped his cries for hunger as well as ended up feeing the rest of the survivors.
At first, people felt weird about it, but as hunger started to wear down their humanity, more and more of the weaker ones were slowly picked off. In the three months they had been trapped, they were down to about half of their initial population.
A perfect example of the theory ’survival of the fittest’.
The more Désiré continued to pace back and forth, the more eyes that were drawn to him. For the most part, everyone in the building was terrified of the five men, and no one had bothered to approach them since Dimitri had put down the first challenger.
But let’s face it, the sheep always made sure that the wolf was within eyesight.
"Why?" yawned Ronan as he stretched out on one of the benches. "I be thinkin’ dis is a cozy spot fer a nap."
Dimitri let out a low chuckle. "We aren’t made of sugar, why are you so worried about a little rain?" he purred, his eyes flashing red before they settled back down.
"Is you serious?" snarled Désiré. "No man would be caught dead out in dat weather. Here de weather kills faster dan a hungry gator at a picnic."
"And if you were no longer a human?" asked Dimitri, his voice more seductive than the Sin of Wrath deserved to be. "What then? Would we still be stuck here while the Devil only knows what is happening to our woman?"
Luca, opened his eyes, proving that he had been listening to the whole conversation. "I’m listening," he said, his head slowly turning to Dimitri as his eyes narrowed.
"My brothers are back," shrugged Wrath as if it wasn’t that big of a deal.
However, going months without hearing a single voice inside their heads was enough to make the other four men wonder if they were going crazy. It was like the Sins had completely disappeared...
And with them their hope.
"Awe," purred Greed inside Luca’s head. The man almost slumped down in his chair as the familiar feeling of not being alone in his head returned. "Did you miss me?"
Luca didn’t bother to reply, but Greed could easily feel the relief coursing through the human.
’Where were you?’ demanded Luca instead. If the Sins had only been there earlier, Max wouldn’t have left and things wouldn’t have gone to pot.
"Dealing with some shit," shrugged Greed. "But if you are interested, me and my brothers are more than happy to give you some relief. Let me in and I’ll give you everything you ever dreamed of and more."
Luca looked around at his brothers, seeing the same unseeing eyes that told him that they, too, were talking to the voices in their heads. Only Dimitri sat there silently, sipping from a bottle of water as he watched for threats.
’We can’t,’ snarled Luca as rage threatened to consume him. ’Max up and left, plus we don’t have Réne. We are missing bodies for two of your brothers.’
"Such a thoughtful meat sack," chuckled Greed. "But you don’t need to worry. The Pride’s newest replacement is close enough to your location that we can still cross over at the same time."
’And Max’s Sin?’
"Gluttony is more than happy with his latest acquisition. However, clearly we gave you seven too much leeway, and we are learning from our mistakes. You either let us in now, or we will simply move on to the next choice," shrugged Greed.
’I thought we were special. Wasn’t that why you chose us?’ sputtered Luca with a shake of his head.
"Everyone has a little sin in them," Greed purred. "And we can chose from any of them if we so desire. However, you and Pride’s original meat sack saved Hattie when she was just a child. It was her connection to you that made us chose you. You really aren’t that special."
Luca nodded his head. That made more sense that the idea that they were the only ones who could be chosen to be hosts for the seven Deadly Sins. ’What do we have to do? Is there a ritual? A sacrifice? If we bleed too much, we might attract a zombie or something, but we will do whatever you need.’
"Such a good meat sack. You listen to orders, your obsession with our woman is right there with ours, and you have never once wavered. Truly, a perfect specimen of your species."
Luca could feel the eyes of Désiré, Salvatore, and Ronan on him and it was obvious that they were getting the same offer that Luca had just received. With a definitive nod of their heads, everyone was on the same page.
Enough of this bullshit. Enough waiting around for a ball to drop or for something to happen. This was their destiny; they needed to grab it with both hands and never let it go.
’What do you need?’ asked Luca, his back straightening as he considered everything that they might need for a possession ritual.
"I just need you to open your mind and let me in."
