Chapter 165: Sleep On The Couch
Beau studied the look on the Governor’s face and fought not to laugh. The man wore his feeling on his sleeves so much that was amazing that he even had a successful career in politics.
Or maybe he just thought that with no one around to hold him accountable, he didn’t need to care about it so much.
"Your healing must have taken a beating today," mused the Governor as he studied the other man. "First you had to deal with all those patients down in quarantine and then the general illnesses of the rest of the camp. On top of all that, just as you are about to relax, I pull you off your nice couch and force you to take care of Lucinda."
The smile on Beau’s face was every bit as fake as the one on Marcus’ face. "Healing is my calling," he said. "I’ll never not want to do it."
Everyone seemed to think that he developed the power to heal after the fall of mankind, but that wasn’t the case at all. For the most part, everything that he did for others was nothing more than what he had done at the hospital before the zombies had come, and while it was tiring, it didn’t drain him.
However, while he might not have developed the ability to heal with a simple touch, what he did have was an affinity for earth and water. And since the human body was made up of mostly water... he could manipulate everything inside a person from their muscles to their organs, and even their blood and brain.
He could ease the pain inside a person simply by adding or subtracting water. He could also cause pain the same way...
And holy fuck was it hard to not call all of the water out of the body in front of him.
"You know where the door is," grunted Marcus, finally giving up all pretenses of civility. He had so many things on this list of things to do that it was giving him a headache. Add on the fact that his golden goose was hurt and unable to help him...
He was definitely feeling more than a little frustrated.
"You’re right," agreed Beau. "I should get some spare clothes. It’s fine to sleep on the couch, right? It’s either that or sleep on Lucinda’s floor, but I am fine with either arrangement."
"Excuse me?" sputtered Marcus, his eyes going wide as Beau’s words seemed to penetrate the haze he had found himself in. "Why would you be sleeping here?"
"Oh," nodded Beau. "You would prefer me to treat Lucinda at my place. That’s fine, too. I just didn’t think that you would be comfortable with that arrangement, but that’s up to you. I am more than happy to accommodate either situation."
"NO," shouted Marcus loudly before calming back down. Smoothing out his dress shirt, the Governor took in a deep breath and collected himself. "I don’t think it is wise for her to wake up in a stranger’s apartment. I know that I have nothing to worry about when it comes to your professionalism, but I am worried about Lucinda."
"As any good parent would be," agreed Beau. "Which is why I suggested the couch."
"I just don’t understand why any of that is needed. Didn’t you say that she was going to be fine?" sputtered Marcus, wondering just how the situation had gotten so far out of control. "Can’t you just touch her and heal her?"
"I can," assured Beau. "The only problem is that it is a head wound, and those are notoriously unpredictable. I also said that she was badly hurt. I really couldn’t justify leaving her like this. Before everything happened, she would have been admitted for overnight observation."
The other thing that Beau was greatly enjoying was the fact that no one had really been around a Healer, so none of them knew exactly what they could and could not do. It gave him a lot more leeway when it came to stretching the truth.
"You can sleep on the couch," sneered Marcus before he spun around and left the apartment. There was too much to be done, and not enough time to do it. Maybe he should just wish for the rain to go away...
Yes, that would be his next wish as soon as Lucinda was well enough to go back to granting them.
Besides, that doctor wouldn’t touch her. He had seen the types of women throwing themselves at Beau’s feet, and Lucinda was no where near their level. She would be kept safe, and Marcus could go back to work knowing that his prize was in the best hands possible.
After all, they were the only compound that even had a healer.

Chang Xuefeng’s wings rustled in irritation as he continued to go higher and higher into the air. However, it always seemed like no matter how high he went, the walls around the Legislature compound wouldn’t let him in.
He had tried digging under them, but he met with the same resistance as when he was trying to go over them and through them.
Feeling his frustration growing and not knowing what was happening to his charge, Chang Xuefeng pierced through the storm clouds and let out a loud battle cry.
He had tired to deny his nature time after time, but since he refused to have his wings removed, there were certain limitations. Like, for example, death. He could send other reapers out to take the souls to Hades and the afterlife, but for the truly heinous humans, it was his responsibility to hunt them down and reap them.
This meant that he had been called away from Hattie’s side much more here than he had ever been back in Country K.
Maybe that was because the souls naturally avoided Death like the plague, but for the life of him, he couldn’t catch a break.
Hurdling down to earth, Chang Xuefeng pushed out his wings at the last second, letting them guide him gently to the ground.
"Sir?" murmured a soft voice beside him. "There is another soul that you need to handle personally."
