Chapter 160: The Doctor
"Do you see now, Maman?" I asked, getting off the couch and walking around her body. Her eyes were glazed over in pain as she stared straight ahead. "That man is a lot like you," I continued, crouching down so that it was easier for her to see me. "And right now, he isn’t going to let anything happen to me. After all, I am the most useful person in this city to him. I grant all his wishes for power and fame. What do you do?"
Maman tilted her head back slightly, her eyes widening in panic. "Demon girl," she hissed at me, the venom in her voice belying how much pain she must be in. "You are a demon. I am going to tell Marcus, and he is going to kick you out of this place. Good luck surviving, Demon."
"See, Maman, now you are getting it," I purred as I slowly came to my feet and sat back down on the couch. "Go ahead, tell Marcus... I wonder who he will believe more. The jealous hag who has been preventing him from getting what he really wants, or me? The angel who has served up the world on a silver platter?"
Before Maman could speak, the door flew open, and Marcus’ worried voice came through loud and clear. "Please, Dr. Landry, my daughter is just over here. Please, you have to try and save her."
"I do everything I can, Governor," replied a deep bass voice. That voice seemed to vibrate inside of me, waking up the creature deep inside as even she wanted to know who it belonged to. My blood seemed to tingle, and things were happening inside my stomach as I heard the footsteps approaching.
Maman groaned pitifully as she tried to get the attention back on herself, but whoever belonged to that voice was mine, and I wasn’t giving him up to the witch.
"Sir?" I called out. "I don’t think Maman is doing well. Maybe the doctor should see her first." That was the key to acting pitifully; always make sure that everyone knew you were the most selfless person in the room.
Then, everyone else looked like they were putting on an act.
"Your Maman can hold on," murmured Marcus, coming to his knees in front of me. The bottom of his feet ended up kicking his wife in the ribs, but he didn’t seem to care. "I’m more worried about the amount of blood coming out of that wound. I can’t believe she would do something like that."
"I was out of my room," I whimpered, "It was my fault for making her mad."
Looking up at the man whose throat I would cheerfully slit, I blinked slowly. His eyes glazed over with lust and something else that I couldn’t pinpoint as he lifted his right palm to cup my cheek. "It is never your fault, Sweet girl."
The sound of a throat clearing behind Marcus made my attention turn from the man on his knees to the man towering over me. "Are you the doctor?" I asked, cocking my head to the side.
Please tell me yes. Please tell me yes and that we can play doctor and patient every night before going to bed.
Okay, so I am not too proud to admit that I clearly have a type. The man’s skin was a beautiful olive-brown color, as if he had spent too much time in the sun, and his light amber eyes seemed to have flecks of gold in them as he stared down at me.
His brown hair was ruffled in a way that I didn’t know if it was styled like that or if he had been running his fingers through it. He had a bit of a heavy five o’clock shadow. Not so long that it could be a beard, but he wasn’t clean-shaven either.
And holy fuck did that stubble frame the most perfect smile, a smile that was fully focused on me.
The look on his face was that he knew a joke but wasn’t going to tell anyone what it was, and for a moment, I couldn’t tell if I liked it or not.
I really shouldn’t be released on this world anytime soon without at least one of the guys. Right now, it seemed like I was collecting them all, and I really couldn’t find my favorite flavor.
"Hello, Sugar," smiled the doctor. "I see you have a bit of a boo-boo on your head." I glanced briefly at Marcus and noticed him narrowing his eyes at the doctor’s name for me, but he didn’t say anything.
Huh, I guess even for someone who was immortal, it was never a good idea to piss off a doctor.
Biting my lip, I looked up at the man, who was easily in his middle to late 20s. Daddy number one was going to have a bit of competition.
Humph, it served him right for leaving me alone for so long. I really thought that he would have found a way to be beside me before now, but I guess shit happens.
"It hurts," I whimpered, looking down at Marcus as if I needed his direction.
"I know, Sweet girl," murmured my mother’s husband as he stood up. Stepping over my mother’s body, he gave way to the doctor. "But Dr. Landry is the best of the best in this state, and there is no one I trust more than him to make you feel better."
I bit my tongue, ready to tell both men how the good doctor could make me feel better, and simply nodded. "Okay, I trust you."
"I will be watching you," sneered Marcus as he glared at the doctor. "Try anything, and I will find another doctor to take your place. Remember, there is no better city in all of Country M; you don’t want to lose your place in the world, right?"
Okay, so maybe Marcus was more willing to piss off the good doctor than I originally thought.
"Of course, Governor. You know that my job is my life. There is no way I would be willing to do anything that would jeopardize that," smiled the doctor. "But I am either going to have to make some room or take her to another place where I can get her cleaned up."
The doctor looked down at my whimpering mother with the same smirk on his face from before. "You choose."
