Chapter 159: Please Don’t Leave

Chapter 159: Please Don’t Leave

It was hurricane season in City O, and I didn’t mean the sports team. Pressing my hand against the glass in front of me, I watched as rain absolutely pelted the ground. The wind seemed to scream as it brushed past the buildings in the Legislature, trying to find its weakest points.

This particular storm had gone on for seven days now, not once letting up on the intensity. It was the longest running storm that I could remember, but since it seemed to match my mood, I wasn’t going to complain.

"Why are you out of your room?" demanded Maman as she entered the apartment where she was living with her husband. I wanted to say that I was living rent-free, but since Stepdaddy dearest made countless wishes every day, I more than paid for my room and board.

Shrugging my shoulders, I turned my attention back to the outside world. The impenetrable walls that Stepdaddy asked for were now the number one killer of the rich and famous living in the legislature.

The entire compound was situated around this one building, and this one building was on a slight incline. That meant that the rain only had one way to go, and that was down. However, the ground was so saturated with water that it wasn’t able to go down anymore. The walls kept the rivers of downpour inside, giving Marcus and the rest of the elite their own private beach.

Complete with dead bodies floating around.

Stepdaddy really wasn’t impressed with that, let me tell you. I was just waiting for him to wish that the bodies be dealt with...

Instead, I still had to do a year’s supply of food every day, plus medicine and weapons, since the storm was whisking away what little supplies they had. Or it made the supplies unusable.

"You will answer when spoken to," snarled Maman, dropping her dainty umbrella at the front door and shrugging out of her rain jacket. I had no idea why she was dressed like that; there was no way she would ever be caught dead out in the elements.

"I am out because I want to be out, Delliah," I replied, looking over my shoulder. For some reason it felt like even the storm was holding its breath, and I was getting excited for what was going to come next.

"Get your ass back inside your room, or I’ll—"

"You’ll what?" I sighed, finally giving the bitch my full attention. "Haven’t you realized it yet? I am here simply because I want to be. You don’t mean anything to me, so if you don’t want me to do something to you, then I suggest you ferme ta bouche and walk away."

Maman gasped, clutching the pearls resting against her neck. "I am your mother," she snarled, her face twisting in rage. The only problem was that she didn’t quite understand her new place in my life. "You will obey me."

I scoffed at that statement before ignoring the woman. I might as well have placed a gun against her head for her reaction. Stomping over to the glass, she gripped the back of my head and started pounding it against the glass.

My skin quickly split as it came in contact with the window, and blood started pouring out fast. That was the thing about head wounds; they bled like a stuck pig and always looked worse than what they were.

"What is going on!" demanded Marcus as he closed the door behind him. Rushing over to where Maman was still so lost in her rage that she didn’t understand that the man of her dreams was looking like he wanted to kill her, Marcus pulled her off of me.

"Lucinda," puffed Marcus, still holding a screeching Maman by the back of her head like she had been holding me. "Are you okay?"

"I don’t think so," I whimpered, putting on my best helpless look. "My head hurts so much... am I going to die, Sir?"

Marcus flung Maman down to the ground as he rushed to inspect my wound. "Why is there so much blood?!?" he demanded, his eyes going wide with fear. Gently leading me to the couch, the two of us stepped over Maman as he helped me sit down.

"Stay right here, okay?" he murmured, his hands going up to adjust my ponytail. "I am going to get a doctor and make sure that you are okay."

"Please don’t leave me!" I cried out, gripping his arm in both my hands. Seriously, I think I missed my calling. I would have done amazing as an actress. "I’m scared. What if Maman wakes up? Please don’t leave me!"

Marcus gently extracted his arm from my grip, his face going completely blank as he looked at me. Turning around so that he was facing Maman, he brought back his foot a few times and brutally kicked her.

I heard her ribs snap as she arched her back, gasping for breath. Yeah, having your ribs broken was a real bitch.

Still not done with her, Marcus stomped down on her knee and outer thigh, causing even more damage. I didn’t know if the force was enough to break any more bones, but Maman had certainly learned her lesson.

And I didn’t even have to lift a finger.

"She won’t move," Marcus promised as he framed my face with both of his hands. Wiping the blood out of my eye, the look of concern that he gave me almost made me think that he was worried about me.

But I knew better than to assume that.

"Less than three minutes, and I’ll be back at your side, with a doctor in tow," he promised, kissing me gently over top of the good-sized goose egg growing on my forehead. "Don’t worry. When I get back, I’ll deal with your Maman and move you out of that closet, okay?"

Nodding my head, I made sure that my eyes were wide and innocent as I bit my lip. "I believe everything you say, Sir."

Marcus grunted with happiness and kicked Maman one last time before he rushed out of the apartment.
