Chapter 158: Wide Open
Chapter 158: Wide Open
The door slammed shut behind Maman as she left, and I could hear the sound of it being locked from the outside.
Knowing the woman who had given birth to me, there would be only one key to this room, and it would be on her person at all times. That way, she wouldn’t come home to find her husband in my room.
Silly woman, blaming me for his actions. Then again, I couldn’t help but chuckle over the fact that it was solely because of her jealousy that I was now safe from him.
Sometimes, life worked out weirdly like that.
-----
Chang Xuefeng stared at the wall in front of him. He had tried pounding on it several times, and yet, not even a speck of dust came off the thing. There was no way he was going to be able to create a hole in the middle of it to slip through.
Looking up at the top, he cocked his head to the side. Going over it might work better than going through it...
Crouching down, he jumped as high up as his body would allow, only for the wall in front of him to seemingly grow taller and taller the higher he jumped. Landing back down with enough force to create a small crater in the ground, he bit back the snarl.
Can’t go over it...
Can’t go through it...
That just left one option.
-----
"Have you heard?" whispered a man as he looked around the room.
"I have," hissed the man he was speaking to. The second man also looked around the old restaurant. There might have been only 20 or so people there, milling about as the skies opened and rain poured down.
They might all have been searching for shelter, but they were all going to the same place for the same reason.
Luca, Dimitri, Ronan, Désiré, and Salvatore sat at one of the far tables, their backs against the wall as even more people rushed inside to get out of the storm. That was the problem with Region L; the storms came without warning most of the time.
And they weren’t kind at all.
"Have you heard?" asked another woman sitting closer to their table. She, too, looked around the room as she stuck a finger in her baby’s mouth, trying to soothe it.
"It can’t be true," replied a second woman with a frantic shake of her head. "Those rumors are just as bad as the one about the Swamp Witch. There is no way the Legislature has more food than people, not to the point that they are giving it to outsiders."
"I swear it," hissed the first woman. "Apparently, a year’s supply of food just magically appears every morning. And, if it isn’t eaten in time, then it goes rotten because of this heat. It must be because the Governor wants all his people to be well taken care of."
Salvatore snorted at that thought but didn’t bother to say anything.
"Are you thinking what I am thinking?" purred the woman without a child in her arms.
"No, I’m not," sneered the other woman. Looking down at the child, her lip twisted in disgust. "There is no way he would be willing to take a woman with a baby. Besides, I hear he is married."
"What?" chuckled the woman, sitting back in her chair. "Like married men aren’t interested in affairs. Just think about what he would be willing to give the woman he was fucking if he will give the world some food."
"Are you going to try?"
"It won’t hurt. Besides, even if I can’t see him, I’ll still be getting food at the end of the day. It’s a win-win situation for me either way."
The other woman hummed, and the conversation quickly drifted off to other topics.
"Did you hear that?" purred Wrath as his face broke out into a smile. "Our Queen is simply amazing, isn’t she?"
Dimitri cocked his head to the side as he studied the people around him. Everyone was talking about this Governor and his ability to produce so much food. However, there was only one way that could possibly be happening.
"’E’s got our girl, don’t ’e?" murmured Dimitri softly. Luca nodded his head, and Ronan let out a low grunt.
"I’m worried," sighed Luca. "She is putting out that much power every day, won’t she be drained? And if that happens...."
"She can’t be drained," replied Wrath, speaking directly to Luca. "She is literally the thing wishes are made of. To say that there is a limit on her granting wishes is like saying that there is a limit as to how many breaths of air she can take in a day. And every wish makes us stronger..."
"What do you mean?" asked Luca, turning to look at Dimitri.
"Endless food, that’s Gluttony and Greed’s domain. So, every time a wish is made for more of something, they get the kickback. Very soon, those two are going to have enough power to breach the veil and come here."
"But der be only so many souls in a person," chuckled Ronan. "De wishes shouldda be limited to one each. Otherwise, ain’t my Cher on de loosin’ end?"
"Such a human way to think about things," chuckled Wrath. "You might have only one soul, but each person can have endless sacrifices. Each cell in your body contains power. An arm, a leg, an organ? A person can become a dried out husk before we even take the souls... not to mention the connections."
"Connections?" grunted Salvatore, pulling his attention away from the room full of people and over to Dimitri.
"Every person who eats the food will have to sacrifice something for it. Even if they aren’t the one who made the wish, they are still benefiting from it," shrugged Wrath. His Queen was definitely going to leave her mark on this City...
He almost felt bad for the humans...
Almost.
Oh well, when his brothers were finally here, there would still be enough people to play with. After all, they might not be able to touch County K with the old Gods wandering around, but County M was wide open for them.
