Be Careful What You Wish For: A Zombie Apocalypse -
Chapter 124: A Taste Of Home
Chapter 124: A Taste Of Home
"Ha!" spat Chang Xuefeng. "How is that a reward? I gave up my dinner tonight to get you this fight, and then I have to sacrifice something else in order to have my wish granted? No, thank you. You can keep your wish. Just make sure that you take your time with this one... make it look good."
"You gave up your dinner for me?" I asked, cocking my head to the side. I don’t remember the last time anyone had given up something for me... made a sacrifice for me. Hell, I don’t think it has ever happened.
Chang Xuefeng rolled his eyes like I was being ridiculous, but he really didn’t understand. "It’s not that big of a deal," he sighed. "It’s not like the food here is all that good. The human’s handler is more than welcome to it."
"No," I replied, all emotion gone from my face. "You will not ever give up your food for me again. Do you understand?"
When you had gone hungry long enough, you understood just what a sacrifice it was to give up your food for someone else. I was sure that the man in front of me had never gone hungry in his life, but that was beside the point. Right now, none of us knew where our next meal would come from.
"What do you want to eat?" I asked, really staring at him for the first time. I had brushed him aside in my head with every interaction, understanding that where I was going next, he would not be able to follow.
But now?
Fuck my life. There was no way in Hell I was leaving him here.
The gaping wounds in his cheek and left eye were slowly knitting together. However, there was a long scar going up and down his left eye. It was clear that that had been there long before his change, and that was why it would be there long after.
His right eye, a beautiful chocolate brown one, studied me as intently as I was studying him, and his face twisted in a slight smirk the longer I stared at him. The slight flash of his teeth made me realize that they had shifted from the original sharklike ones to a human set, perfectly inline and white.
The universe was not fair, I tell you. Why are now upgraded zombies looking so hot?
Rolling my eyes, I let out a little scoff, not letting him know that he was getting to me. "You would be perfect for Lust," I sneered, turning my head away from his penetrating eyes. "You two have the same egos when it comes to your looks."
I heard the key to my door being inserted into the lock and the door softly swinging inward as Chang Xuefeng quietly approached from behind. For someone who was over 7 feet tall, the Reaver was practically silent on his feet.
"Really?" he purred, bending forward until his cheek was practically pressed against mine. "Lust? It’s the first time I have been called that."
I snorted at that statement. "There is no way you don’t know how hot you look," I sneered, rolling my eyes as he fished for compliments. "There are still mirrors around."
"I am half," he started. "Too Country I for Country K, and too Country K for Country I. My mother is from here, but my father was from Country I. Mother met him when she was interning at a fashion house. Apparently, he was one of the models, and things... progressed."
"I’m sorry?" I asked, somewhat confused. I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to be apologizing for, but it didn’t take a genius to hear the hurt and pain in his voice. "If it helps, I don’t know my father at all. Mother said that I was a demon born from Hell that she picked up one day."
"That seems harsh," grunted Chang Xuefeng, backing off just a bit as he realized that I wasn’t pitying him or looking down on him. But seriously, no one could choose their parents, so why were the kids always the ones to be blamed?
"Especially since I am pretty sure that I look a lot like her," I shrugged. "But she’s been gone for a few years now."
"I’m sorry," murmured Chang Xuefeng, wrapping his arms around me. "It must be hard to lose your mother. Mine was bitter when Dad left, but she didn’t hate me nearly as much as she could."
Humming, I nodded my head, relaxing into his embrace. It didn’t hit me until right now just how much I missed being touched.
There was silence for a few minutes before I spoke again. "You never told me what you wanted to eat."
"Honestly?" sighed Chang Xuefeng, pulling me even deeper into his embrace as he came to his full height. "I miss my mom’s wonton soup," he said. "She always made it differently from everyone else, and to this day, I can’t find it, no matter where I go."
Wrinkling my nose because, of course, he couldn’t have come up with something I already had in my seemingly endless supplies, I closed my eyes and held out my hands.
"Here you go," I replied after a second. I felt Chang Xuefeng startle behind me as he looked down and saw the soup. "I can’t promise it’s exactly what you were wanting... but it’s the best that I can do."
Silently, almost reverently, Chang Xuefeng let me go and picked up the bowl. Bringing it up to his nose, he took in a deep breath. "It even smells the same. How—" he started before shaking his head. "Right, you are nothing but pure magic, no matter how I look at you."
"Just shut up and eat," I replied, wrinkling my nose. He had made a sacrifice for me, so I would grant a wish for him. All the mushy, personal stuff could go away.
Walking over to my cot, the Reaver sat down and then began inhaling his soup.
"Before, I was going to take you out of this camp and then leave you to fend for yourself," I finally admitted as soon as the soup was gone. The moment the bowl was empty, it disappeared as if it never existed.
It was kind of like me.
The second no one needed me anymore; I disappeared from their memory as I had never existed.
Wow... that was depressing even for me.
Shaking my head, I continued. "If you want, I’ll take you to Country M with me when I leave here."
