Chapter 122: In The Next Life

Tank nodded to the guard posted outside of the door to the basement. It had been more than a few days since he had last been here. Hopefully, those inside would be more willing to answer his questions.

"Good morning," he called out, his voice echoing around the empty. "Did you have a good vacation away from me?"

Last night he could have sworn that he had a dream about Hattie, but for the life of him, he couldn’t remember what it was. However, he knew that wherever she was, she was alive and able to see. That was enough for one of the many stones on his shoulders to lift.

In fact, he was so happy it took him a while to place that particular smell. "Ooh, when did Antoine pass away?" he asked, cocking his head to the side as he stopped in front of the hanging male.

Parts of his arms were practically black where his blood started to pool after death. They almost looked like a design, but that corpse was definitely now dead. It must have been somewhat recently, too, because Antoine hadn’t had a chance to turn yet.

"It looks like Christmas came early," he chuckled, pulling up his chair as he turned his attention to the pale Brittney. Even after all this time without food or water, she was still clinging to life. "Have you thought about what you want to say to me?"

Brittney lifted her head as if it weighed a hundred pounds. Her eyes were swollen shut from tears, but Tank had yet to lay a hand on her... and that gave her hope.

"I’m sorry," she croaked out. Her mouth was so dry that her tongue practically stuck to the roof of her mouth as she tried to speak. "I have no idea what happened to Dante’s wife."

"Dante’s wife?" scoffed Tank, leaning forward in his chair. Resting his elbows on his spread knees, he studied the woman in front of him. "Do you really think Hattie is Dante’s wife? Is that why you did what you did?"

If it were possible for Brittney to turn even more pale, Tank was sure that she would have. "She’s not?" she sputtered, her voice cracking from lack of water.

"He wishes," Tank chuckled as if it was the biggest joke in the world. "But Hattie is mine, body and soul, that woman is mine. So you see why I take it a bit personally when she up and disappears on me... right?"

Ever so slowly, Brittney nodded her head up and down. "I honestly don’t know. Antoine might have done something to her, but now he’s dead. You and I will never know the truth about the matter now."

"Ah," replied Tank, a look of disappointment crossing his face. "That’s too bad. But if there is any consolation that we can take from our current life and times, it’s that the dead never stay dead for too long."

"What?" demanded Brittney, turning her wide eyes toward where the chains beside her were softly clattering. The sound became louder and louder until the dead corpse beside her started to moan uncontrollably.

"Those things weren’t around in my last life," sputtered Brittney as the zombie launched itself at her, only to be stopped by the chains keeping him in place. "We had the mutated zombies, the Reavers, but that was it. Nothing like this."

"Ah, so you were reborn, huh?" mused Tank, the slight smile on his face never leaving. However, all amusement was gone from his eyes. "That must have sucked. I mean, I’m good with my current life, but I don’t know what I would have done if I had been reborn just to live through the apocalypse again. Did you run over a bus full of nuns in your past life? Is that it?"

"No!" hissed Brittney. "It’s all Dante’s fault that I was reborn like this. If my life hadn’t gone downhill after he died, I wouldn’t have died with so many regrets. However, I am the lucky one. I get to live my life over again and change everything."

"You are the lucky one, huh?" murmured Dante as he appeared from the shadows. "I’m so sorry that you and Antoine torturing me to death made your life miserable. I’ll reflect on that later."

"Dante," breathed Brittney as if she had seen her knight in shining armor. "You have to save me. I had nothing to do with Hattie. I was in my room the entire time."

Dante hummed as Tank stood up and offered his chair to Dante. Taking it with a nod, Dante sat down and crossed his legs in front of him.

"You remember?" asked Brittney, a lone tear trickling down her cheek. "I had hoped that you didn’t. I really thought that you didn’t."

"It’s kind of funny, actually," continued Dante as if Brittney hadn’t said anything. "I had all these plans for you... to make you fall in love with me before I crushed you. In this life, I became what you wanted the most, the most powerful Boss of the underworld... and yet, Hattie pointed out just how stupid that was."

There was a long pause as Brittney started crying, her eyes completely devoid of tears due to dehydration. Her sobs shook her chains, sending the zombie beside her into a frenzy.

"It wasn’t stupid," she gasped at last. "It just goes to show just how much you love me."

"Ah, but it was stupid because I don’t love you. Back then, I hated you so much that my every waking moment was focused on what type of pain I could inflict on you," corrected Dante, coming to his feet. "But now I don’t feel anything. Tank, do with her what you want."

"Dante!" screamed Brittney, her hoarse voice crackling. "No matter what happens in this life, you’ll be mine again in the next one!"

"No," sighed Dante, turning to look at the woman one last time. "I won’t be. From that moment when Hattie stood beside me, watching everything that you did to me, I knew that I was her man from then on. My next life, and the next one after that until the end of time... I am hers."
