Chapter 121: Dying To Know

I didn’t mean to sound quite as accusing as I was sure my statement had come out, but I was feeling weirdly possessive of the Reaver.

Chang Xuefeng scoffed at my words, a look of amusement on his face as he stared at me. "Rip doesn’t let anyone near the Healer, not if he can help it. Hell, we’re taking bets as to whether or not he is fucking the human."

I blinked rapidly before holding up one of my hands in command. "Nope," I announced with a shake of my head. "Not going there. Not thinking about it, not acknowledging it, it’s not happening. If you want to gossip, go with something else. Anything else. People’s eyeballs getting ripped out, heads being removed from bodies... anything but who is fucking who."

"I really didn’t take you for such a prude," chuckled Chang Xuefeng as he turned around and leaned against the cage, his arms crossing in front of his chest as he stared forward.

"I’m 13, don’t ya know," I chuckled, sticking out my tongue. Even though he had his back to me, I knew without a doubt he could still see what I was doing.

"You are a pain in my ass, don’t ya know," replied Chang Xuefeng. "And even if you were 13, which I highly doubt, you are a lot more naïve than most 13 year olds that I know."

"Oh?" I demanded, raising an eyebrow. "You know a lot of 13 year olds? I’m pretty sure that is illegal. And if you knew me half as well as you think you do, you wouldn’t call me naïve."

"I know you better than you know yourself, Princess, and for that reason alone, I can call you naïve. You haven’t seen a lot of the world, and while you don’t mind blood and murder, you cringe at the very idea of intimacy," answered Chang Xuefeng with a shake of his head. "But that’s fine. You have years to figure all that shit out."

"So, now that things have become super weird," I sighed, flopping back onto my cot. "Can we go back to talking about murder and mayhem?"

Once again, Chang Xuefeng let out a chuckle as if I was the funniest thing in the world to him. "Fine, what murder and mayhem do you want to talk about."

Taking a chocolate bar from Teddy, I opened it and started munching away. "Who is the best human fighter? If I pull back a bit, can I fight him?" I asked, enjoying the taste of chocolate on my tongue.

"Our best human fighter is Yin Jie," stated Chang Xuefeng, "And he is currently on the injured list."

"We have an injury list?" I replied, somewhat impressed. Just how much did that have to be fucked up for the Healer not to be able to heal them? I mean, that has to be some next-level shit.

"We don’t," sneered Chang Xuefeng. "We have men that are too scared to let the Healer heal them. He’s putting up yet another fight about letting her in his cage. He’s one of many men who brought about the need for fighters to be tied to their beds before they are healed."

"Ugh," I groaned over the stupidity of some men. "Couldn’t they just hurry up and die? That way, they don’t need to worry about being healed. Problem solved."

"Such a bloodthirsty little creature, aren’t you?" mused Chang Xuefeng as he straightened. "Let me see what I can do to get some of this energy out of you... okay? I wouldn’t want you rampaging around the camp while I’m still in it."

Chuckling, I nodded my head, closing my eyes for a mid-afternoon nap.

The Gatekeeper tugged at the chains, holding each one of his hands over his head. The chains rattled with his furious movements, but they continued to hold strong.

"Welcome to the Ninth Circle of Hell," murmured a soft voice in the shadows. "I wish it were nicer, but it is what it is. It can’t be too comfortable, now, can it?"

The Gatekeeper stilled, his eyes frantically looking around the room to try to see where the voice was coming from. He had never heard of a demon with a voice like that. It was warm and inviting, so soft that it made him want to melt into a puddle and do whatever it asked him to do.

"I’m sorry," he whimpered; the very idea of disappointing the voice was enough to tear him apart from the inside out. "I shouldn’t have disappointed you like that."

"It’s okay," sighed the voice, the truth and forgiveness in it piercing the Gatekeeper’s heart. "We all do things that we shouldn’t. The problem is that you hurt me, and I... I find it hard to forgive people who hurt me like that. On the other hand, you are the Gatekeeper. Without you, souls will come in and out of Hell without process. You had such an important job... and yet—" The voice trailed off and, once again, the Gatekeeper’s heart shattered at the disappointment in the tone.

"I can do better," he promised the voice, willing to give it anything, even his eternal pledge of loyalty for it not to sound that way. Of course, he had given the same pledge to the Devil, but that bastard didn’t deserve shit from him. This voice, whoever it belonged to, they were worth everything and more.

"I’m sure that you can do better. Like I said, since the beginning of Hell, before time itself came into existence, you have guarded my home. But now, the things you have done, the creatures you have released. I wish I could save you; I really do."

The softest sound of footsteps sounded in front of the Gatekeeper and he lifted his head up to see the most beautiful woman ever. Her silvery blond hair hung loose around her body, accenting her slim black mermaid-style dress. There was a long slit up her left leg, ending only a few inches under her hip. Her right arm was covered in a sleeve, leaving her left side completely exposed.

Tattoos decorated her arm and chest, the intricate swirls too complicated for the Gatekeeper to make out any one image.

He tried to look up to see her face, but his eyes turned blurry before he could make out her features. Whoever she was, she didn’t want her identity to be known.

"I am your servant," murmured the Gatekeeper, dropping his head in a bow to the creature in front of him. "Please, order me however you wish."

"You have no idea how sorry I am," sighed the woman, her heels clicking ever so softly on the marble floor. "But you were my servant, and I did order you however I wished... and then you tried to kill me. Now, tell me, Gatekeeper, what should I do to someone who has tried to kill me multiple times? I’m dying to know."
