Chapter 108: Silent But Deadly

Chapter 108: Silent But Deadly

Of the twenty or so men around me, more than half of them kept their mouths shut; the sneering looks on their faces telling me just what they thought of my question.

There were five who wished for death, while only two asked for their body weight in food.

All of the wishes were accepted right off the bat, and I wasn’t exactly going to give any warnings to these men. They didn’t mean anything to me, and Greed needed as many souls as possible.

Seven souls, back in the possession of the Seven Sins. Well, six, because no one seemed to know where Wrath had gone. But I could have sworn he had spoken to me earlier, so I have no idea what that was about.

But seven souls were only just the start.

"Harbinger!" called out Feng Niu, going a crap job at hiding his shock that I wasn’t ripped apart by the men. "You’re next to the pit."

Shrugging my shoulders, I stood up, snapped my nose back into place, and strolled toward the reaver. There were low murmurings around us, and questions as to why I was sent back to fight twice without being healed drifted over to me.

"Because my last opponent only managed to land a single shot," I called over my shoulder, not bothering to look at the peanut gallery. I was sure that before I got bored of this place, I would be meeting most, if not all, in the pit.

Yin Jie, though, he I had a special death planned for him. Complaining about being healed... such bullshit.

"How was your dinner?" asked Feng Niu as if he actually cared about the answer.

"It all looked so delicious," I sighed, letting my shoulders drop. "But some gentleman came and asked for my meat and bun, so of course, I had to give it to him, and then another man came and asked for my porridge."

"You should have eaten something," murmured the reaver beside me, the concern evident in his voice. "You play an important role right now. After you win this fight, I’m going to go look for one of the fighters... homes... for you. Depending on how much money you earn, I might even be able to get you a private ca...accommodations."

Some of the fighters around us started talking low amongst themselves, their gazes darting over to me every so often, their faces twisted in rage.

Was that his plan? Get me to be the new scapegoat so people laid off the Healer for a while?

It wasn’t like I was overly opposed to the plan, but if I had known, I know a few ways to get under people’s skin even more.

I just had to shrink about half a foot and change my wardrobe.

"You really are the best," I sighed, blinking up at the 6’5" reaver. He was a bit on the short side, from what I could see, but other than his height and open wounds, I really didn’t understand how his species became the top of the food chain.

"I try, I try," assured the man, patting my arm. "Anything you need, just let me know."

Nodding my head, I couldn’t help but marvel over how smart the one in control of all this was. He, they, it... whoever he was earned money from the audience. They would probably need to pay to even enter, then the bets, and whatever the VIP cabins were, they would probably cost a pretty penny.

But that wasn’t enough for him. No, any spare change that was thrown down at us as a ’tip’ for our services went right back to the head honcho. We had to pay for our food for our accommodations, and the more money you had, the better you were treated.

And, at the end of the day, the money and freedom they had promised us for fighting would die in the ring along with the person it was promised to. The owner of us all wouldn’t be out anything...

But after all that, these men still didn’t seem to understand just what they had agreed to do.

Oh well, it wasn’t my job to point out their stupidity.

"Is the knife still in the sand?" I asked, cocking my head to the side as I stared at the fight going on in front of us.

Feng Niu had led us through a tunnel that exited into the pit, but there was a set of doors, made out of metal bars keeping us from going into the arena. I would put money that I didn’t have that the bars weren’t meant to keep people out, but rather to keep the people fighting from changing their minds and running away.

"It is," nodded Feng Niu. "But you’ll need to be careful. Your new opponent won’t be as easy to kill as your last one was."

Absently, I nodded my head. It didn’t bother me if they were easy to kill or not; the point of the matter was to put on a show.

And that I knew how to do just fine.

"For our last fight of the night, we are bringing back a new crowd favorite," announced a distorted voice. "Our current champion, Silent But Deadly, is ready to face the fighter that you, yourselves, have chosen for him."

The crowd roared their pleasure, but I couldn’t help but choke on the laughter threatening to escape. Did someone really pick the name ’Silent But Deadly’ as a ring name?!? How could anyone say that with a straight face?

"Are you okay?" asked Feng Niu, looking at me in concern. "I understand that you are probably terrified and in hysterics, but you need to pull yourself together."

"You’re right," I nodded, sucking in my breath. "I definitely cannot die tonight."

Even if my opponent was the fucking Grim Reaper, I was not letting myself die to a guy named after a fart.

The stands above my head shook with the stomping of the crowd as they welcomed their champion.

Feng Niu unlocked the gate and tried to push me out the door before I understood what was going on. However, he just ended up looking like an idiot as I slid away from his hand and strolled toward the center of the pit, directly to where Silent But Deadly stood waiting.
