Chapter 107: A Better Woman Than Me
"Do you want my porridge?" I asked, holding up the bowl without seeing who was standing over my shoulder. He had interrupted my conversation with Gluttony, and for that reason alone, he deserved to eat whatever crap this was.
"You’ll need it," murmured the man, coming to sit beside me. "You can’t afford to stave yourself here," he continued, resting both hands on the table in front of him.
Did he really think that was a way to earn my trust? To show that he wasn’t a threat?
"It doesn’t matter to me," I shrugged. The cook, Zhu Gen, didn’t even give us any utensils or hot sauce to eat this crap, so there was no way I was touching it. "I can’t eat without hot sauce."
It was a staple in O City, more so than ketchup and right after the holy trinity. However, I wasn’t sure if even an entire bottle of the stuff would bring life back to this thing.
"I hear you beat my record for the fastest death," the man continued, his voice a low chuckle meant to be inviting. I, on the other hand, would take Lust any day over this man. "You need to be more careful."
"And why is that?" I asked, cocking my head to the side, my smile still fixed on my face.
"Because if you are too good, then you are going to have to meet me in the pit, and you won’t like that at all," shrugged the man like he was hot shit. "I’m Yin Jie," he continued, holding out his hand.
"Luci," I replied, not bothering to take the offered limb. I was more likely to rip it off than anything else.
"The Harbinger of Death," nodded Yin Jie as if he already knew who I was. Then again, considering I was the only woman in the pits, it would take a moron not to know my name. "If you want, I can give you a few pointers to surviving this place."
"Oh?" I asked, turning my attention to the mush. "And what pointers can a man who doesn’t seem to protect his center tell me?"
"You can tell that just by looking at me, huh?" Yin Jie chuckled. "Well, pointer number one is to stay away from the Healer," he announced, his face twisting into a mask of rage and humiliation. "She enjoys torturing us for the sake of our overlords, and as a result, she lives like a princess."
"The Healer?" I asked the confusion on my face not an act at all. "Delicate, long black hair, stuck in a cage, can heal with a touch? That Healer?"
"Yes," the man hissed, his eyes flashing with rage. "And she isn’t stuck in a cage; she is living like a princess in a cabin, healing us so that we can go back out and fight or fuck at her command."
Nodding my head, I turned away from the delusional man. The Healer I had met was just as caught in this trap as the rest of us were. If she wasn’t fighting or fucking, it was because she had another type of gift that the reavers could exploit.
"Putain d’idiot," I sneered, looking at the man from under the curtain of my hair.
"What?" asked Yin Jie, clearly not understanding what I had said. So, English was automatically translated, but French was not. That would prove to be handy.
"Fucking idiot," I translated for him, a bright smile on my face. "You hate someone for healing you... what a pussy."
"Excuse me?" the man demanded, coming to his feet as he hunched over me, his harsh voice growling into my ear. "You have no idea what it is like to be forced to do something against your will."
This time, I didn’t bother to hold back my laughter. Tilting my head back, I enjoyed a belly laugh that caused everyone to turn around and look at me. "You are so right," I agreed as I fought back my laughter. "I have absolutely no idea what it is like to be forced to do something against my will. You are the only poor baby in this entire world to have to experience something like that."
"That’s not what I am saying," sneered Yin Jie. "Every last one of us here has been forced to be healed when we would rather not."
"Such a stupid thing to bitch over. If you don’t want to be healed, then go die. It’s not like it’s all that hard of a thing to do," I answered, waving the man off. Cry me a fucking river.
He has had someone by his side who only had to touch him, and all of his wounds were healed in an instant.
I, on the other hand, have had to staple my own flesh together.
There really was no comparison.
"You don’t think I wish for death every day? But no, none of the men here are good enough to take me out."
With those final words, Yin Jie spun around and stormed out of the makeshift cafeteria. I still couldn’t stop laughing to the point where I almost missed the whispered ’Deal Accepted’ coming from the voice inside of me.
Oooh, his death was going to be a good one.
’Take his soul,’ I whispered back at the female. ’And drag out his death so he understands just what he was begging for.’
I didn’t care about the Healer. While I could see Elizabeth in her, I would never confuse Wang Tian Mu for her. However, I also understood the pain she must be experiencing, healing people who weren’t grateful.
I was also smart enough to understand that there were probably consequences if she didn’t heal. So she was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Truth be told, I would have made the same decision she had.
Only I would have made it so that their wounds were only healed on the outside...
Let them experience the pain and misery they were begging for. After all, it’s not like whoever was running this shitshow would know the difference.
See, that was why she was a better woman than I was. She went above and beyond to give these stupid connards a fighting chance.
Pushing aside my bowl, I continued to sit at the table. It wasn’t like I was in a hurry to go back to my cage, and without my babysitter, it was time to make friends and grant wishes.
"So," I called out, turning around. "If you could wish for anything in the world... what would you wish for?"
