Chapter 28: Striking a deal
"What? That’s a ridiculous amount! Captain, we can’t do that!" Anita’s eyes almost popped right through her glasses after she heard the outrageous amount.
This was the first time she had ever spoken out so loudly—even she was surprised by her own explosion.
She quickly held her lips after she realized what she had done.
But the shock on her face was still there.
Jacob drew in a long breath.
Kieran as well felt a bit tense after he had made his request, but he had to maintain a straight face so they would know just how serious he was.
’...They know that I can still choose from all the other factions. They are clearly trying to recruit me before the others, so I can use that to get as much as I can from them,’ Kieran’s thoughts railed.
He too knew the price he had mentioned was outrageous, but he knew as well that he couldn’t back out—at least not at that moment.
And he couldn’t show any signs of desperation either. If he did, then they would easily turn the tables against him.
Thankfully, they didn’t seem to be just as skilled as Nellyx.
He was sure he would have had a rougher time convincing her to give out such an outrageous amount.
’Also, she didn’t tell them about my faulty talent... Not like it’s still faulty... What do I tell them my talent is?..... That would be for later,’ Kieran thought to himself.
His major priority was his future the moment he left the walls of the academy.
Everything he had was given to him by the academy, since he was a student.
But right after the awakening, each of the students would be given a week’s time to get a faction, else they would be completely thrown away from the academy grounds.
The academy still had to bring in new students each year, and they definitely couldn’t leave behind any extra stomachs.
Feeding all the students was partly a problem as they needed food rich in mana to increase chances of possible awakening, but such meals weren’t easy to come by.
If Kieran left the school, he would have no place to call home, as he would also have to leave the school dormitory with all his belongings... if he had any.
’I can’t lose this opportunity, and I can’t go back now... Was it really the right choice to tell them such a high amount?’ He felt his heart race as Jacob opened his mouth a few times but still couldn’t say anything.
’Two hundred doperium... it’s much, but the faction should be able to afford that, right?’ he asked out.
"I don’t know, your realm has changed a lot since I was here in the past," Alexa said lazily.
She seemed unbothered about Kieran’s troubles.
’I’ve screwed up!’ Kieran felt a cold sweat roll down his back.
Despite this, he still maintained a poker face—he had to!
’This was my only chance! Why was I so greedy?!’ Kieran felt like throwing himself a slap.
’If they don’t accept, there’s no way any faction would accept such an amount either. I might end up getting less than what I would’ve gotten if I didn’t decide to be so greedy.’
If he had gone for a less outrageous amount, then they were likely to accept without much thought.
But the time Jacob spent without talking—it felt like a whole day had run out.
And each passing second was like a walk around the entire Nether realm.
’Five hundred doperium is crazy!’
Kieran felt his anxiety slowly breaking through his steel face—he couldn’t hold up for much longer.
’Wait! I can treat this professionally,’ he thought to himself.
It wasn’t over. There was still an opportunity.
"I guess the price is too much for your faction... If your faction can’t give out that much, what assures me things will get better if I climb up the ranks?" Kieran asked with a straight face.
Acting a bit arrogant was all he needed at the moment.
"Of course, you would be offered higher pay as you climb up the ranks," Jacob said calmly.
He was having a hard time choosing between Kieran and the outrageous amount that he requested for.
In front of him was a golden opportunity—one that could most likely change the fate of his faction.
He had so much faith in Kieran’s abilities, but then... was it worth taking the risk?
That was the thought.
’I’ve already offered to go against the Nelkon family, and now I have to pay five multiples of the minimum wage only to have him in our faction. Will the general be happy with all this decision?’ Jacob knew he had to think through it thoroughly, but Kieran didn’t want to give him such an opportunity.
"Then prove it... Give me this amount for the first month and then you can revert back to the normal minimum wage from the next month after that," Kieran made his own calculations as well.
’With this amount for the first month, then I can probably get an apartment, and then a good weapon for raiding the realms... Then from the next month, I can use the normal wages for paying rent and getting food only... It is sure to last for a long time!’
He had never purchased a doperium weapon before, but he knew it had to be costly.
That was the reason behind the amount he requested for. That way, he felt he could get a high-class weapon.
Jacob parted his lips.
It was somewhat a good deal, since he only had to do it for the first month and not throughout the recruit training program...
Even Anita looked to be more convinced that he only wanted the amount because he wanted to be certain that his pay in the future would be promising.
And since it was only a one-time thing, it didn’t seem bad at all.
"So that’s the deal? You’ll join us if we agree to it?"
Kieran almost jumped from the clinic bed but quickly hid the excitement behind a straight face.
"Ye----"
