Chapter 50: No doubt
Chapter 50
Brenda walked elegantly, her green floral dress swaying behind her beautifully, her mini green bag hung on her arm as her heels clicked on the marble floor. Her lips turned into a smile as she turned to watch the twins trailing after her. The kids were so cute, she couldn’t help but succumb under their cuteness and wanted to spoil them.
They walked into a big shopping mall and she gestured toward a cubicle with display-stacked toy boxes and plush animals. "Pick anything you want," she said gently, her gaze warm—contrast to her usual frowning face and commanding demeanour.
Jasmine’s eyes widened as she whipped her head around in awe. "We can pick anything?"
"Yes," Brenda confirmed, nodding her head. Her eyes softened, looking at the child’s undiluted happiness.
Jasmine flapped her arms happily, "Hanith!" she turned to her brother excitedly, "Look! There’s that Iron Man we saw on TV—"
But Hanith didn’t budge from his position. He stood still as his small hands clenched on the strap of his backpack. His eyes darted across the store, lingering on the strangers, the unfamiliar environment. He looked lost—unlike his twin sister.
Jasmine tugged his arm slowly, "Come on," she urged, pouting. "Let’s just look."
Hanith took a step, it was as if his legs were heavy to carry as Brenda watched both twins. The twins’ personalities were different from each other. Jasmine was like a ray of sunshine—energetic, bold, curious—but the boy? He was like the moonlight—quiet, gentle, and shy. Both personalities blended into that of Aaron when he was young.
Brenda looked away a little to motion to a salesgirl. "Wrap up that toy and any other toy the kids touch."
"Yes, ma’am."
Brenda turned back to the children just in time to see Jasmine had dragged Hanith toward a playhouse game set. She looked at the hospital playhouse toy.
"Look," Jasmine pointed to the toy excitedly. "Mommy won’t let me have it," she whispered, her brow furrowed as she stared at it longingly.
"Mommy has a reason," Hanith muttered under his breath.
Brenda’s eyebrow twitched and she stepped in, her tone overly sweet. "Don’t worry about your mother. Today is for fun."
Jasmine turned at the mention of her. "When are we going home?"
Brenda forced a smile. "Soon," she replied, tapping Jasmine’s nose lightly. "You are staying with Grandma for a while," she added and brushed a strand of Jasmine’s hair behind her ear.
"Then let’s go get a fountain of ice cream."
Hanith’s gaze flickered to his sister, but his sister was already grinning, her eyes brightened, and he shook his head with a little frown.
Brenda turned toward the attendant. "Do you know what, just pack everything the twins see." Her voice was clipped.
As Jasmine ran off to another stall and tried on a new set of sunglasses, tilting her face in the mirror, Hanith stood beside her, arms crossed, not saying a word.
"Do you like it?" Jasmine asked, turning to her twin.
He didn’t answer, but he glanced at the wristwatch display on the counter.
Brenda watched as the kids interacted. She observed how Jasmine nudged her brother, how Hanith shrugged and muttered, "It’s fine," and how Jasmine smiled and whispered something that made them both giggle.
Her lips parted slightly. "They really are his kids," she muttered under her breath.
It was uncanny, no doubt.
Her gaze softened but quickly hardened as she remembered their mother.
God, she could never accept that girl!
No matter what!
Brenda turned to the attendant. "Make sure the bags are sent to the address I gave. Neatly packed."
"Yes, ma’am."
She faced the twins again, her voice lowered and gentler than when she spoke with the lady. "Anything else?"
Jasmine grinned, shaking her head. "Nope." While Hanith didn’t say a word—the boy barely said a single sentence since they arrived.
"Then let’s go home."

Rnnng!
The shrill sound of his phone woke Aaron from his sleep as he groaned, his head throbbing from pain.
A harsh punishment for him drinking to stupor last night.
God! He held his head tiredly, his head was banging.
He trailed his hand to the side of the bed, searching for his phone, following the ringtone. When he took hold of it, he didn’t even bother checking the caller before he picked up. "Hello," he grumbled in a hoarse, cracked voice.
"Where are my children?" That was the only thing he needed to hear as the tiredness and sleepiness vanished from his eyes. He jolted up quickly, which made it feel like his head was splitting tenfold.
Oh, he grunted, holding his head.
"They aren’t with me," he answered, getting up from the bed, wobbly.
"What do you mean they aren’t with you?!" He removed the phone from his ear quickly from Katherine’s voice—it nearly burst his eardrum.
"I’ve not been around since yesterday," he responded, his eyes scanning for his shirt. "I told you I’m meeting a friend last night and I’ve not left or seen the kids since I dropped them off in the morning," he explained, looking at the new room he met himself in, then walked out to see Raymond already standing, offering him a mug.
Aaron nodded in gratitude and collected the mug.
"I’ve not seen my children since yesterday. The school said someone picked them up."
"What?" Aaron returned the mug, not caring the warm medicine splashed on his hand and Raymond’s palm. "I’m coming," he said softly, his brow raising in confusion.
Aaron hung up, quickly putting his phone in his pocket. "See you later," he muttered, walking to the door hurriedly.
Raymond, swatting his hand where the warm medicine spat on, dropped the empty mug on the table. "What happened?" he asked worriedly.
Aaron sighed, rubbed his face. "The children are missing."
Raymond raised a brow, already picking his car key to follow Aaron. "Whose children?" he asked.
"Mine," Aaron responded, pressing the elevator button.
"You have children?" Raymond gasped, his eyes widened comically as he tilted his head to look at Aaron like he’d grown another head.
"Yes, my and Katherine’s children," he answered.
"Wow," he clapped his hands, following Aaron into the elevator. "Since I’ve arrived in this city, I’ve been discovering and rediscovering."
