Babies' Secret: My Ex Wants Me Back!
Chapter 49: Not ours. My Katherine

Chapter 49: Not ours. My Katherine

Chapter 49

"My man," Aaron’s friend—Raymond—patted Aaron’s shoulder before slumping into the seat beside him. "Why are you down?" Raymond asked, signaling to the bartender to give him a recommendation.

Aaron exhaled tiredly, not even giving his friend a glance as he swung his glass and took a sip. "Katherine." The name fell from his lips like a longing prayer.

"Katherine?" Raymond uttered in shock, grabbing Aaron by his shoulders to look at him. "You mean that Katherine—our Katherine—?"

Aaron glared at Raymond. "Not ours. My Katherine," he bit out, and his friend raised his hands in surrender.

"Sorry," Raymond said sheepishly. "But both of you together?" he asked. "How, why and when did it happen?"

Aaron rolled his eyes, he didn’t know why he entertained Raymond’s invite when he told him he was in the city. Now his head was banging from the questions Raymond was bombarding him with. Raymond was his only friend after Katherine. He met Raymond in the hospital years ago when he had an accident and since then they have became friends.

"Slowly," he muttered, rubbing the side of his forehead. "We aren’t back together—yet, but," he sighed, "we were doing well these past weeks, but some days ago she started avoiding me," he rambled out. "Do you think I’ve done something wrong?"

"And here I thought you were enjoying your vacation with your lovely wife?" Raymond joked, making Aaron scowl, not finding it funny.

"That bitch isn’t my wife." He slammed his glass on the counter.

"Just joking."

"Better," he muttered, then sighed again dejectedly. "My Katherine just closed off. She didn’t smile at me, she didn’t look me in the eyes, she—" he groaned, requesting the bartender to add more to his empty glass.

"Have you asked her?"

"I did."

"And?"

"She said no, she wasn’t. But I can detect it in her voice and her eyes—she was lying." Aaron had been trying to understand why Katherine was avoiding him. Was it because of the kiss in the kitchen? He couldn’t pinpoint it, but he knew—it was after that night Katherine changed. He first thought it was a small thing, but whenever Katherine saw him, she frowned and looked away as—he shook his head.

"Maybe you should give her space to sort herself out. You know it has been long?"

"Space?" Aaron asked incredulously. "That I can’t."

"Okay, I don’t have anything else to say," Raymond shrugged and drowned his own drink.

Jasmine was in the middle of coloring a dolphin when her teacher tapped her shoulder and gestured toward the door. "Sweetie, there’s someone here to pick you up. Your mommy sent a note."

Jasmine stood up happily and followed her teacher to the headmaster’s office to see a woman and Hanith already in the office.

She walked to her twin brother and grabbed his hand. "Mommy sent a note?" she said, asking no one in particular as the woman walked to them, smiling.

"Yes, she told me to pick you and your brother up for a surprise," the woman said.

"Surprise?" she asked, her eyes widened. "Really, okay!" she grinned at the woman.

Hanith turned to her, looking at Jasmine sharply. He pulled her and in a hushed voice, "Jasmine!"

"Come on, Hanith," Jasmine waved. "Mommy wants to surprise us, we have to go."

He frowned, his hand tightened on Jasmine’s wrist. "Mummy said don’t go with strangers," he enunciated, his voice low.

The woman bent down slightly, tried to pat his head, but he moved away and the woman smiled tightly at the rejection. "Your mom sent a note, sweetheart. We don’t have time. She’s waiting."

Jasmine, ever the bubbly one, tilted her head in wonder. "Why didn’t she call the school herself?"

The woman hesitated, smiled again. "She couldn’t. It is a surprise, remember? Let’s go, okay?"

Hanith still didn’t move. He narrowed his eyes, holding tightly to his sister. But Jasmine tugged his arm. "Come on, Hanith. Mommy wants to surprise us."

Hanith looked at the teacher then the headmaster and followed the strange woman. As soon as they reached the car, the twins felt tiredness wash over them and they fell asleep.

Brenda looked at the folder on her table. Her source never disappointed her with information. Every bit of detail about the kids was in the folder. The name of their school, their teachers, and the time they were dropped off from school—everything was in the file.

She needed to see the seedlings her son was hiding from her as she waited at the café—the heart of Federal City—waiting for her agent to bring the kids.

Brenda felt her phone buzz and she picked it up to see a call from her agent. "Hello, ma’am. We’ll soon be at the location."

As the call ended, her lips curled into a cold smile and she gestured to the waiter to get something kids might like from their menu.

"Where’s my mom? Where are you taking us?!" It was the loud voice that Brenda heard and she turned to the door to see a woman holding two children, struggling to hold them as they thrashed in her hands.

Brenda could feel people turning to them and some were already taking steps toward the lady before she stood up and walked to her.

"Hello," she said softly, and the twins looked at her before turning to the lady.

"Good job," she said curtly, waved at the lady dismissively.

"Who are you? Where’s our mother?"

Brenda chuckled at the female child, then stared at the male twin. The boy looked exactly like her son when he was his age. It was like a split image of him, and she felt her heart pulled. The bitch really gave birth to these children.

"I’m your grandmother," she responded, walking back to her seat as Jasmine followed her immediately.

"Our grandmother?" she asked. "But we don’t have a grandmother. Mommy said that."

"That lying bitch," Brenda said under her breath.

"Yes, your father’s mother."

Jasmine blinked, dumbfounded, while Hanith was confused.

Brenda sighed, opening her bag as she brought out a photo album. "Look, I’m not lying," she said and opened it to pictures of Aaron when he was a child. To get the children’s trust, she had to bring the album with her.

The twins looked fascinated with the pictures as they flipped through them until they stopped at a picture of a boy not less than seven, with a missing tooth at the front of a piano.

"Is this Uncle Piano?" Jasmine asked, tapping the picture.

Brenda raised her brow, not understanding the term but nodded. "Yes, that’s your father."

"Woah!" Jasmine gasped, her eyes lit up. "He looks like Hanith," she muttered, turning to her brother who had the same expression as her.

Brenda looked at the children and felt her heart tug, softening. Even though their mother was a mistake, the kids were still her grandchildren. She smiled warmly as her body itched to spoil them.

I’m not accepting their mother but these children, I’ll snatch them away from her dirty paws, Brenda thought.

She stood up as the kids stared at her. "Let’s go shopping. Then after that, we go home."

Jasmine gasped excitedly. "We pick anything we want?"

Hanith looked at her skeptically. "Why?"

"Because both of you are good kids and I’m your grandmother. It’s my job to spoil you," she smiled, taking out her card.
