Chapter 40: Ms. Og of Ogs
Chapter 40
"I need to return his shirt," Amelia mumbled to herself as she paraded in front of Mathew’s office like a soldier on duty. The mahogany door stared at her tiredly—the door was already stressed from her dropping by and not knocking. She’d been coming to Mathew’s office, but knocking on the door was the issue.
Was she scared? Definitely no!
Shy? No.
Nervous? Yes!
Today was like that too. How can I return it? she counted in her head. This was awkward. Why did she have to slip that day and have her boss there to watch her embarrassment?
She wanted to pull her hair out.
Thank God the damage for the glasses and wine wasn’t removed from her salary.
"Today is it!" she willed herself and raised her hand to knock on the door—that was when the door yanked open.
And swiftly, she turned in shock, trying to run away, but tripped.
Mathew had just finished talking with Katherine about the new trend in the hotel market and was asking advice from her as the manager if the hotel should also follow the new trend. When he saw a shadow of someone pacing in the little space from the door to the floor, he raised his brow in question, quickly telling Katherine to keep quiet, and walked cautiously to the door.
He wasn’t expecting anyone.
Katherine, looking at him dumbfounded, didn’t understand why he was being edgy, and followed him.
Mathew yanked the door open only to be shocked to see the lady from that day. And he’d forgotten to ask Katherine about the lady.
"You again?" Mathew said, and Katherine looked from Amelia to Mathew.
"Amelia," Katherine called, and the lady jumped. "What are you doing here?"
"Erm," Amelia stuttered, gripping the packaged polythene with her.
Katherine smiled warmly, glanced at the bag with her then to Mathew, and her lips tugged mischievously, "I’ll take my leave now," she grinned, and she turned to go to her office.
"Wait ma’am—" before she could finish her statement, Katherine had already disappeared around the corner.
Amelia’s hand stretched like she wanted to hold Katherine back but gulped, not looking at Mathew behind her. "I’ll be going now also," she said, but was surprised her leg and body had a different idea—she tripped.
She freaking tripped again, and she could see herself hitting the well-tiled, beautiful floor. The ground was waiting for them to collide, but an external force blocked the impact.
An arm wrapped around her stomach, pulling her back. "Are you always this dramatic?" Mathew chuckled, his body and hands moving faster.
Amelia laughed nervously, "I’m sorry, I’m not always like this," she said.
"Okay?"
"I mean it, truthfully."
Mathew chuckled lightly at her comical expression, how she shook her hands to express her words. "What are you doing here?" he asked, releasing her. He looked at his arm that was previously around her stomach—she was light as a feather.
"Well," her eyes darted around as she held the bag tightly, "I’ve not returned the shirt—"
"Oh," he had forgotten about it, "It’s okay. You can keep it."
"But—"
"It’s just among the spare shirts I have in my office. I’ve forgotten about it," Mathew reassured while Amelia’s eyes were downcast.
"Is it because I’ve worn it or I’m late to return it?" she asked dejectedly.
"No no, what do you mean?"
"It’s yours, not mine," she stated, putting the bag in his hand, and swiftly turned to leave, but Mathew grabbed her hand.
"Wait—I don’t mean anything by what I said."
"Okay."
Mathew opened the bag and brought out the white ironed shirt, but something dropped on the floor. His eyes zeroed in on the object as he bent to pick it up, but Amelia beat him to it.
"Sorry," she said sheepishly. "I didn’t know I put it in this bag. I’ve been searching for it."
"Is that a Sakura keyholder?" he asked, and Amelia’s eyes widened.
"You know Sakura-kun?" Her voice sounded excited, bringing out the plushie.
"Yes," he nodded his head.
"Woah, I can’t believe it—for someone like you."
"For someone like me?" Mathew raised his brow, intrigued by her choice of words.
"Like sincerely, you look like someone whose nose is always buried inside nonfiction books or documentaries-watcher-thingy." Mathew gave a hearty laugh at her response—so ridiculous.
"Why did you say that?"
"Well, you look like—" Amelia swallowed.
"I’m listening," Mathew edged her on.
"Don’t fire me, boss. I’m just saying my mind."
Mathew chuckled lightly, his eyes craned to the corner. "No offence will be taken."
Amelia narrowed her gaze at him, skeptical as she raised her hands to her eyes, making them squint, "You must keep to your word."
"A man always keeps to his words."
"So you look like—" she trailed off, scrunching her nose, then her eyes lit up, "A grumpy Squidward from SpongeBob."
And Mathew laughed out loudly, holding his stomach as his chest vibrated. A weird thing to compare him with. "Am I grumpy?" he asked in between his laughter.
"Well," Amelia scratched the side of her head, "You always look like you’re bored of everything."
He smiled melancholically, "Okay, I think Squidward is still better—at least I’m not compared with a worse character."
"And I also didn’t take you as an anime girly—especially the action type, watching Wind Breaker," he said.
"Oh," she blurted out, "I’m a die-hard fan. OG of the OGs," she boasted, raising her nose while Mathew chuckled.
"Okay, Ms. OG of OGs—" before he could finish his statement, his phone rang, breaking their conversation. A frown made its way to his face as he quickly shot her a smile.
"Sorry to cut the conversation short," he raised his phone to show her, "See you around, Ms. OG of OG," he said, walking away.
"Why that name now?" she frowned.
Mathew didn’t turn but responded, "At least it’s better than Klutz."
Amelia rolled her eyes, muttering, "You caught me twice. You’re welcome," she refuted, seeing that he didn’t take the shirt with him.
She grinned, folding the shirt back into the bag—till later again.
