Chapter 39: Dinner Date

Chapter 39

Aaron finally had the courage to ask Katherine out for dinner, a dinner with just the two of them—not with the kids. Hopefully, she’d agree.

He’d messaged her earlier to ask, and it took 30 minutes, 36 seconds for her to respond. He was nervous when he didn’t receive a response quickly and thought maybe he’d be rejected, but surprisingly, she accepted with a curt reply.

Well, he didn’t mind, as long as they were going on a date.

Aaron picked her up at a bus stop after the hotel street, according to what she wanted. She didn’t allow him to pick her up at the hotel.

He parked his car at the restaurant, and as they walked in, he was assaulted by the warm scent of the high-end building.

It smelled rich and expensive—exactly what he needed.

He gently guided her, placing his hand at the middle of her back, to their space. When they reached it, he gently pulled out the chair for her to sit, and after taking her seat, he sneakily inhaled her scent and felt his heart skip and his ears ring.

God, so heavenly.

Aaron took the menu clipboard, skimmed through it before raising his hand to call the waiter. When the waiter came, he pointed and told him what they wanted.

Katherine’s brow raised. She was surprised because everything Aaron had ordered was her favourite. She didn’t think he’d remember them perfectly.

"Thank you," she said shyly, dropping the menu clipboard. She didn’t even know what to order herself because everything on the list was entering her eyes.

The waiter came and dropped their order with a smile. Both took their cutlery and started eating while making conversation. The conversation flowed easier than expected, yet none of them touched the sour part of their estranged past.

"I remember wanting to be a dancer. Now look at me," Katherine laughed, taking the napkin and dabbing her stained lips, "Though I like my work now, but—" she lowered her voice, using one hand to cover the side of her mouth, "It’s stressful. Don’t tell my boss."

"I won’t," Aaron raised his hands, laughing.

"You better not," she said with a fake scowl, "Well, it pays super well," she muttered with a smile.

"That’s all that matters. The money."

"Yeah yeah yeah," Katherine waved her hand before her eyes flashed, then snorted out, quickly using her hands to cover her mouth. "Do you remember that day you sneezed when you were giving your graduation speech, but mucus came out of your nose?" Katherine started laughing as she tried to stifle it.

"No," he banged his hand on the table lightly, shaking his head. He wanted to disappear. He could never forget that day—high school graduation. Sneezing publicly could embarrass someone sometimes. "Stop it. I don’t want to remember that dark history."

"It was really funny that you didn’t come out of your room for a whole week," Katherine said, sipping her wine, "Everyone was panicking that young master wasn’t eating and would die of hunger—not knowing I was always supplying cookies for you." She smiled at the memories. "And old Madam Rick caught us."

"Oh lalala, I remember. She made us do the dishes." Katherine shivered, remembering the old lady’s scowl and voice. That woman was hella terrifying—like Madea.

"Life was good then."

"Yeah." She nodded as Aaron switched their steak plate—he had cut it into the smallest chunks for her.

Aaron looked at her and exhaled, "So, I’m going to say five things about you, and if I’m correct, you’ll go out with me again—only us," Aaron suddenly said, and Katherine’s steak, about to enter her mouth, paused.

"Okay." She nodded.

"You like eating your chocolate with bread."

"Aww, stop that," Katherine laughed, her eyes twinkling with laughter. Everyone knew that about her, so nothing to hide, and that was simple.

"You don’t eat pizza."

"Okay," she nodded. Well, that was simple also.

Aaron adjusted in his seat, his clamped hands on the table, "You drink date seed coffee every morning."

Katherine’s eyes widened in shock, "How do you know that?!"

Aaron smirked, "I’ve my source." Thanks to the kids.

"You like mixing milk in your egg for a scrambled egg."

"Well, I like my egg milk like how I like my man," she uttered subconsciously, twirling the wine glass. Not noticing the shock and gasp from Aaron.

Aaron felt his throat bob, his mouth dry from her response, then blinked continuously to regain himself. She didn’t mean it like that, fucker, he cautioned himself.

"Last one—"

"No," Katherine cut him off. She could feel her heart thumping. "Lemme ask you something also. If you get it, I’ll go out with you," she said.

"Okay."

"What do I like to do in my free time?"

"You like eating."

"Eating?" she asked incredulously as Aaron nodded.

"You do bake a lot of snacks and munch on them every time."

"Okay, correct."

"You have a small sword tattoo at the back of your ear."

Katherine’s eyes widened. "How do you know?"

He grinned but didn’t respond as he raised his hand again, and the waiter came with the dessert—chocolate tart.

The waiter placed it down, and as they wanted to pick their fork, their hands brushed—skin to skin—and they froze, glancing at each other as they felt a zap of spark rush through them.

Katherine wetted her lips while Aaron cleared his throat as they both ate the chocolate tart in silence.

Aaron drove Katherine back to her apartment—not after getting a takeout for the kids as a bribe he had promised.

He walked her to her apartment door, handed her the takeout as he stared at her longingly, restraining himself from pulling her into a hungry, starved kiss.

He quickly looked ahead to the door plate number, "Thank you for today. I really enjoyed it," his voice came out huskier than intended.

While Katherine shifted bashfully at the doorframe, "Me too," she mumbled, fidgeting under his scorching gaze.

He smiled, took a step close to her, gently putting the strands of hair behind her ear, and whispered, "Don’t forget our next date."

Katherine nearly jumped—his breath and voice tickled her ear as she gulped.

Aaron’s lips curled, placing a short lingering kiss on her cheek—yet so close to the side of her lips—lovingly, and turned, "Sleep tight. I’ll call later." And he left her.

Katherine felt her legs wobbly, nearly fell on her ass, her chest pounding loudly as she squeaked from the action. Blood rushed through her body more than normal, especially in her neck, ears, and cheeks.

"Mommy?" Katherine nearly jumped out of her skin as she heard Jasmine’s voice, breaking her out of her trance.

That sneaky fox!
