Chapter 129: A Weird Family
[Creation of the Fallen has failed.]
[Warning! The target's soul has returned to the embrace of the World Tree, and turning it into a Fallen is not possible.]
"Wait, that's possible?" Daniel frowned. Naturally, he hadn't expected this, but there wasn't much he could do about it.
"So Elves can't be turned into Fallen," he thought about it for a bit and came to that conclusion.
But then why was he able to turn Elarion into a Fallen? Could it be because he was abandoned by the World Tree?
He didn't think too deeply about it and walked toward Ilaris. The girl was in complete shock. Her eyes looked empty and lifeless.
Before trying to wake her up, he canceled the summoning of Zargort.
"Are you okay?" Daniel clapped his hands a few times to get her attention. Seeing she wasn't responding, he had to inject a bit of mana into her body to act like an electric jolt.
"Huh? Daniel? You're alive?" Fortunately, it worked. Ilaris woke up.
"What happened? That female Elf and my father...
father?" Her gaze shifted to the Dark Elf behind Daniel. He looked exactly like her father—but his eyes and hair were completely different.
Daniel sighed and explained the situation to her—at least part of it. He talked about the battle and what had happened.
Of course, he didn't tell her that he had killed her father and turned him into something else. Instead, he gave a fake excuse, saying that Elarion's hair and eyes had changed due to a certain skill.
"I see..." Ilaris let out a breath.
"Father, please tell me—why was that Elf after me?" She looked at Elarion—no, Nairok—and asked.
Nairok first looked at Daniel for permission. Daniel nodded and gave him the go-ahead to explain.
Daniel himself was curious to know, too.
"In truth, you are not my biological daughter. You are a fruit of the World Tree."
"Huh?" Both Daniel and Ilaris were shocked and stunned.
"You're a fruit that grew on a branch separated from the World Tree and turned into a Dark Elf. In a way... you are the child of the Tree itself," Nairok explained coldly.
"I'm a fruit? But how? That makes no sense!" Ilaris started pulling at her hair.
Why was everything so weird? Why didn't anything make logical sense? How could a fruit turn into a Dark Elf?
"Actually, the fruits of the World Tree are quite special. Each fruit can grant a wish. But the World Tree doesn't allow any being—including Elves—to use them. Instead, it uses them to influence fate and luck in the world."
"You were a gift to me from your mother. She gave me the fruit she had grown on. That's the real reason the World Tree is furious," Nairok finished explaining.
"....???"
"This is beyond what I imagined," Daniel sighed. He didn't expect the truth to be this crazy.
Honestly, this was the strangest family he'd ever seen in his life.
Just think about it—your mother is a tree branch, and you're a fruit...
Ilaris went quiet. She didn't say anything. It was all too much to take in. She needed time to process it.
"Then why were the Elves after her?" Daniel asked, as a thought crossed his mind.
"Elves themselves can't use the World Tree's fruit. But once they realized I had one, and that I had wished for a daughter who looked like the woman I loved, they decided to leave me alone for a while."
"In truth, that's why they hadn't come after me all this time. They wanted to observe the results and power of the fruit," Nairok answered.
"So the result is your daughter—Ilaris," Daniel nodded in understanding.
"Exactly. The result is my daughter—an Elf with the purest bloodline among all Elves. Elves are blessed by the World Tree, but she is part of the Tree itself. That's why she's destined to rule over all Elfkind."
"....?"
"Excuse me?" Daniel raised an eyebrow and glanced at Ilaris. This girl was supposed to rule over all Elves?
With her personality, the entire Elf race was doomed—unless she went through a massive character development arc.
"I see." Ilaris closed her eyes.
How was she supposed to deal with these truths? She didn't know—and didn't want to know. She had no interest in ruling over Elves.
She just wanted to explore the world and enjoy her life. She had no particular ambitions.
After that, Ilaris asked several more questions, and Nairok answered all of them. Daniel tried to comfort her a bit, and fortunately, he succeeded.
But he came to a decision—it was better for this girl to leave the mountain and experience the world. She needed to see the real world for herself.
Afterward, they woke up Andreas. His condition was even worse than Ilaris's, and he was in deeper shock.
Daniel had to explain part of the situation to him as well. Once Andreas calmed down, they left the crypt.
"So what do we do now?" Ilaris turned to Daniel and asked.
"Obviously, you and Andreas are leaving the mountain. I still have some business here," Daniel replied.
They all headed toward one of the mountain's exits, which was close to the Dark Elf region. It wasn't far, and it took only about half an hour to reach. Nairok came with them and guided the way.
"Even though I don't know how I should feel about you right now, you're still my father. Thank you... for taking care of me all these years." Ilaris hugged her father before leaving the mountain.
Nairok looked at her. Even though he had become a Fallen, he still retained some of his past emotions.
He hugged his daughter back, with genuine affection.
Meanwhile, Daniel and Andreas were having a conversation.
"How long are you planning to stay in the mountain?" Andreas looked at him and asked.
"I don't know. It shouldn't take long—maybe a day. What about you? Kaisen is dead and your plans with the Elves have fallen apart."
"I don't know... I'll have to report this to the Lionheart family. They definitely won't be happy, but there's no other choice," Andreas sighed.
"You'd better not forget about my rewards." Daniel gave him a serious look.
"I'm not running away. We agreed to wait for you in the Erin region," Andreas said with confidence.
Daniel nodded, and after saying goodbye, they left the mountain.
"I'm curious—did you actually love your daughter?" After they left, Daniel asked Nairok.
"At first, not really. The fruit of the World Tree grants a wish. I wished for the return of my wife, and the fruit turned into a Dark Elf child. But because of the Tree's curse, my wife couldn't return. So instead, I got another version of her."
"I raised her like my daughter. But in truth, I intended to use her body as a vessel for the soul of the woman I loved. I wanted to sacrifice her bloodline and destiny to break the Tree's curse and regain my former power... to find a way to revive my lover's consciousness," Nairok explained with respect.
"Well... all the good thoughts I had about you are gone now," Daniel sighed. This bastard was worse than he'd thought.
Then he summoned Vorak. The place they needed to go was far, and he didn't feel like walking.
"I acted like a father to her for years. It would be a lie to say I had no fatherly feelings at all, my lord. But even then... I was ready to sacrifice her for my plan," Nairok completed his answer.
"Forget it. Ilaris has gone her own way. And you're my Fallen now."
"Let's go. It's time to dead to the depth of this mountain."
