Awakening of the Scheming Wife -
Chapter 93: Sympathy? No!
Chapter 93: Sympathy? No!
"Grace? What happened? Why do you look like you are crying?" A female voice called, and everyone looked at her.
It was Grace’s mother who came along with Helena’s father.
Helena saw them together and couldn’t help but frown.
Madam Hedworth walked to Grace and grabbed her hand in worry as she asked, "What happened? Did someone bully you? Who did that?"
Grace sniffed softly but also stiffened. Bully? If she said that the Master and Madam Morris were bullying her, would she be able to stay in the country anymore?
"Mom, what are you talking about? No one bullied me. Please calm down, will you?" She pleaded softly. She even squeezed her palm tightly to indicate for her to stop.
She thought that her mother would understand what she meant.
Unfortunately, her mother misunderstood her actions and even interpreted them in a completely opposite way.
She thought that her daughter was pleading with her to continue supporting her, and she immediately nodded, "Grace, why are you like this? Even when others bullied you, you still would never stand up for yourself. My heart aches when you do this. Even if you don’t have your father with you anymore, you still have me, your mother, by your side. I will stand up for you. Don’t worry about anything and just tell me what happened and who bullied you, okay?"
"..." Grace stiffened. She couldn’t understand how her mother did not understand her signal just now. It wasn’t the first time she and her mother had put on an act in front of the outsiders. So, she thought that a small signal would let her mother understand what she meant immediately.
She squeezed her mother’s hand harder. The latter frowned and looked at her daughter in confusion. She even raised an eyebrow asking her what happened.
"Wow. Like mother, like daughter I see." Madam Morris mockingly clapped her hands.
Only then did Grace’s mother look at the Morris family and was stunned.
She stuttered and greeted them immediately, "Minister Morris. Madam Morris. How are you?"
After greeting them, she recalled what Madam Morris had just said and frowned, "Madam Morris. What did you mean by what you just said? Did I or my daughter offend you in some way?"
"Hehe," Madam Morris chuckled sarcastically, "No. No. How could the great Hedworths offend anyone? It is the others who bullies your family because your husband is no longer around. Right?"
Just like that, Madam Morris punctured whatever sympathy Madam Hedworth had tried to gain for her daughter earlier.
"What? No, Madam Morris. That wasn’t what I meant. You misunderstood me," Madam Hedworth the meaning behind her words immediately and tried to salvage the situation.
"You didn’t mean that? Then what do you mean, Madam Hedworth? Even if someone was bullying your daughter, you could have asked her what the problem was, understand the situation and then handle it accordingly. But what have you done? Without even knowing if she was really the one to be bullied, you started accusing others and even said that she was now all alone because her father isn’t around. What exactly does that mean? Do we look like the people who bullied people based on their statuses? Just because Master Hedworth isn’t around, everyone would start going around to bully his daughter?" Madam Morris did not breathe for a second and threw a bunch of questions at her all while looking calm and collected as if she was attending a lecture in college.
Helena looked at her composed demeanor and the way she put her words across and couldn’t help but cheer for her in her heart.
Jemma saw that she was smiling and squeezed her arm secretly.
Helena blinked her eyes and looked at her. Jemma signaled her and Helena instantly understood what she meant. She nodded obediently while retracting her smile.
"Huh? No no no... That wasn’t what I... I..." Madam Hedworth stuttered and words couldn’t fill her mouth no matter how hard she tried.
She turned to look at Father Ford and immediately gave him an expression to plead with him to help.
Father Ford sighed and took a step forward, "Professor Jones, please calm down. Madam Hedworth isn’t a woman who had great eloquence. Don’t take her words to heart. If Grace had done something to upset you, please forgive her as she was just a child. As elders, we shouldn’t hold a grudge against children, right?"
"Oh? You mean that if I won’t forgive Grace, it means that I am an unforgiving elder?" Madam Morris raised an eyebrow and asked.
"..." Father Ford was stunned. "Do you have to take such a meaning from my words?"
Madam Morris raised her hand to stop him from speaking anymore, "Master Ford. May I ask, using what position are you even supporting Madam Hedworth and Lady Hedworth without even knowing what the matter was?
"Do you even know what happened? If no one knew you, everyone would have thought that you are Grace’s father and not Helena’s. After all, your daughter was also one of the people involved in this incident."
Father Ford froze when he heard her words. He slowly turned his head to look at Helena. She was looking at him with a frown.
He gulped on his saliva. Her gaze looked like... It looked like she caught him cheating, which he did not and still couldn’t help but feel guilty for.
Helena looked at him in confusion. She did not understand what he was doing. Yes, they were neighbors and good friends. But does he have to go against the Morris’ for their sake?
Also, Grace was clearly digging a pit for not just Faye but her as well, despite being her friend.
If her father was supporting Grace instead of her in this situation, how would she appear to the others?
"Helena? You mean, my daughter is involved? What exactly happened?" Father Ford asked Madam Morris but his eyes never left Helena.
"Shouldn’t you have asked that first?" Madam Morris scoffed.
"Helena, what happened?" Father Ford asked his daughter.
Helena looked at him and shook her head, "Nothing. I think we should stop talking about this topic any further. It is just getting bigger with all the parents involved even though everything happened between us children."
Helena tried to downplay but which of the parents would actually listen to such a thing when their kids were aggrieved?
Not the Morris’ at least.
"Helena, child, don’t say that. You stay on the side. We adults are talking here. You don’t have to get involved anymore anyway," Madam Morris smiled at her and pulled her to stand behind her as if a mother hen protecting her child.
Helena blinked her eyes. Seeing the shoulder of an elder trying to protect her, her eyes watered.
How long had it been since someone protected her like that?
When her mother was alive, she did that.
She couldn’t help but recall her wedding day.
She suffered and yet no one was there to shield her the way Madam Morris was shielding her right now.
The only parent, her father, did the opposite of shielding, breaking her heart completely.
Now seeing Madam Morris’s actions, she felt her heart warm up. She sniffled lightly and lowered her head so that no one would notice her tears.
Suddenly she felt an arm wrap around her shoulder.
She raised her head to find Vernon’s face looking at her.
"Are you okay?" He asked her seriously. The worry on his face and concern in his eyes couldn’t be hidden even if he wanted to.
Helena blinked her teary eyes and the tears slipped her eyes. She shook her head. She did not speak. If she spoke, she was sure that her voice would croak.
Vernon sighed. He held her face with his hands and used his thumbs to clean her tears. Whenever she cried before, he always did this and was used to this.
Helena, on the other hand, felt this action novel and blinked her eyes but she did not think much.
Vernon hugged her, giving her a chance to hide her teary face using his chest as a shield.
She even used his shirt to clean the remaining moisture on her cheeks.
Vernon felt ticklish when she moved around on his chest but he helplessly sighed, not disturbing her.
He saw Madam Morris talking about Grace’s words and he understood the gist of what had happened when he left with his brother.
Father Ford frowned and looked at Grace and then at Helena. He did not know what to say. Actually the matter wasn’t so big that it should involve the elders.
Would the Morris family not know that? They do. But how did the matter go this long?
He frowned and looked at his daughter once more.
Why did he have a feeling that it was because of his daughter?
Anyway, he had to meddle in this matter now that he had no other choice.
He talked a few words with Madam Morris and the latter nodded, before turning around and leaving with her husband and her daughter.
While the family of three turned were walking away, Minister Morris turned back to take a deep look at Grace before leaving.
No one noticed this except for Helena. The corners of her lips curved upwards when she saw that.
[Hehehe....]
"..." Vernon was stunned by the sudden villainous laughter he heard through her inner voice.
Just a second ago, she looked so pitiful. Why did she behave like a villain all of a sudden?
"What did you do?" He asked her directly.
